Just been watching the news about Biden's memory. He really needs to step down IMHO.

We obviously don’t know what goes on behind closed doors but I’m surprised his wife hasn’t had a word, like Dennis to Margaret Thatcher. He’s been a great public servant for decades, but there’s a time to step away and that time is now.

Why is this news all of a a sudden? The guy was making these gaffes throughout 2020 election campaign.

Dummies have been insisting how great a POTUS he is throughout when a one eyed newt could see that he’s no president, just an elderly man wheeled out every then to pretend to be president.

Why is this the only show in town now?

I don’t care how crap we think our (uk) political leaders are, I just think they, all of them, whatever party they’re from, have a world view, an understanding of the complexities of politics on the world stage, which means they would never make the kind of mistakes which Biden is making. It’s almost as if he has only the vaguest understanding of who is who and how they relate to each other. I would say that Trump, although slightly sharper, doesn’t have a complete handle on world politics and has made quite a few of his own gaffes. I always had confidence that Obama knew what he was talking about.

He’s also referred wrongly to Harris as vice president trump

It’s god-awful, isn’t it? If I understand it correctly, there’s no mechanism for forcing a President to step down. How on earth did the US end up leaving itself so exposed to this eventuality?

There are such mechanisms provided in the 25th Amendment to the Constitution:

Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution - Wikipedia

This may only apply in quite extreme cases, however. And after all, no one got Reagan to step down, although he made frequent verbal gaffes (e.g. 'America has a lot to offer the Third World War') and was probably in the early stages of dementia in his second term.

If both candidates make it to November, without either having to retire due to medical incapacity (Biden) or being unavailable due to being in a prison cell (Trump), then the American voters might do well to remember the old fable about the frogs who were given the choice between King Log and King Stork, and chose the wrong one.

The - perfectly reasonable - questions about Reagan’s mental state in his second term were nothing like the blindingly obvious dangers of Biden’s senility.

If the 25th can’t apply to Biden it has no purpose whatever.

I'm away at the moment, but have just seen Biden's claim that he "doesn't need to undergo a neurological/cognitive assessment", which at least explains why there was no mention of one in the medical bulletin released in February

Understandable, really, that he'd have refused such a test, but surely this omission tells its own story?

EasterIssland · 21/07/2024 19:43

Biden ends election campaign, says it's been 'greatest honour' to serve as US president
