To think jumping the bus queue is just rude?

brightsideforwatds · 09/02/2024 14:16

It happens pretty much daily.
Either I will walk to the stop and a man will be waiting.
Other people come from the other side of road and stop the other side of the man.
The bus comes and he gets on and they walk on after him (I must be invisible )
Or there's a queue at the bus stop and people walk to front of the bus from top of bus shelter and just get on.
It drives me mad
And it's just plain rude
Aibu and is it just every man for themselves ?

Contactless can cause delays too.
It takes very little time to pop exact change in the machine.

Ah right. We don't have a machine on the buses round here we have to give the cash to the driver who then has to count it all and put it away.

Do you think they are from overseas and not familiar with our very British Queuing etiquette?
Having spent years abroad, this still drives me insane.
Same with holding doors open for people.. For them to just saunter through without a glance, let alone a thanks. 😖

I would like to apologise for jumping a bus queue in London in 2001, I'm from Australia where buses are never crowded so I just got on. There was much tsking and harrumphing. I still don't know what the system is meant to be.

YABU. I don't mind a queue, but queues at bus stops are just weird.
Bus comes everyone gets on. order depends where the bus lands. End of.

Ido you actually get the bus?

There's not always space. It's polite to let people get on first, if they were there before you. Especially for buggies where space is very limited.

There's a woman every morning who makes a dash for the rear doors with her buggy. Luckily I've managed to get on, but at I supposed to keep waiting because of some rude fucker (who's knows exactly what they're doing?)

It does seem rude but bus stops often aren't quite an organised queue in that people who got there first might be seated further back than those arriving later who are standing. If you want to be next after the man, walk up right behind him and stay there before others arrive, then no-one can go ahead. I would endeavour to keep my place but sometimes there's too many people etc to fully keep track.

Yes the bus doesn’t stop at the front of an orderly queue

It’s just people standing around

Spaghettieis · 10/02/2024 08:36

YANBU. Some people are just oblivious to manners. There’s a woman who gets the same train as me that’s starting to piss everyone off because as we’re waiting for the doors to open (and leaving space for people to get off) she just barges through in front of everyone else. Judging by the muttering this week I think someone might say something to her soon!

EverySporkIsSacred · 10/02/2024 08:40

I get annoyed if there IS a queue...because I'm usually trying to get past on the pavement for bloody ages and nobody wants to leave a gap in case they lose their seat on the almost empty bus. Queues aren't very practical on busy streets.

Queues parallel to the pavement are better than ones across it imho.

quisensoucie · 10/02/2024 09:00

Just say in a very loud voice "excuse me, you obviouly haven't realised I was here before you, so please allow me on first"
Keep it polite, but gain maximum embarrassment

Mumsntfan1 · 10/02/2024 09:07

Why do you want to get on first? You won't get to your destination and fester.

Otherwise you might not get a seat or might not even get on when the bus is busy.

WingBingo · 10/02/2024 09:12

The bus leaves after every one has got on.

the order in which you do that is irrelevant

Another one who's member been on a bus. This is all well and good at 10am, but what about peak times? Not everyone can fit on.

And you've missed the last bus and may have had to wait, only for some idiot to push past you and leave you waiting for yet another bus.

AcridAndStanLee · 10/02/2024 09:24

Not the same but a few weeks ago all the trains back from London were cancelled bar one and this was the last one that evening. Mostly people were rushing but polite as we were all in a similar positions and equally concerned about getting home apart from one man who tried to barge past me. So I barged him back and he barged me again. I told him we are all in a rush and you aren't pushing your way in. We are all as important as each other here. He called me a few names and told me not "to ever do that again". Really pathetic behaviour from us both but he really was a stuck up cunt who thought he could push through everyone to get the seats. Some people are just built that way. We were all squished like sardines.

There's somewhere in the Spanish speaking word where you arrive at a bus stop and the last person says "ultimo" and you follow your ultimo onto the bus in a civilised fashion. We should adopt that.

Boymum2104 · 10/02/2024 09:25

Unless you have a wheelchair of buggy and therefore limited space I don't see why it matters who gets on when

Not strictly true - buses can be busy and they leave after every seat/standing area (if relevant) is filled. When lived in the best Scottish city in the world I commuted to work - if I stood at the bus stop across from my house the buses often ran past or only let one or two on, at rush hour. If I walked 5 mins up the road there was often a better chance of getting on. I often did that. I don't know why my neighbours didn't do that too, but a few times I was on the bus as it drove past the stop closest to me, with them standing there!

They'll hear the 'ex...' of excuse me as they barge past you, sadly.

RausageSoul · 10/02/2024 09:41

I love the idea of the 'ultimo' ststem

swamthelenth · 10/02/2024 11:24

I just think manners in general are going out of fashion. Anyone who bunks the queue obviously will disagree but years ago queueing for a bus ( or anything) was proper order. What happens if the pusher inner then gets the last seat? Surely that's why you queue, so that people waiting actually get an available seat!

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/02/2024 11:35

WhatNoRaisins · 09/02/2024 14:41

Personally I couldn't be bothered trying to remember what order people have arrived at the bus stop. Queuing doesn't really work unless there is an obvious and specific spot the bus will stop at. I also don't see the big deal when it's a bus with plenty of room.

You don’t need to remember. You just need to remember who was there before you and make sure you let them on before you. Anything else is rudeness.

Allfur · 10/02/2024 11:42

Whatnoraisins, would you be so laissez faire queuing for a gig or a bar? I mean hey it doesn't matter who gets on/served first or how long you waited

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 10/02/2024 12:04

You wouldn't even need to remember who was there before you if people made a queue!

Oddly enough I (as in me personally, not every one seems to manage) can queue at my local bus stop, which has about 6 different buses that use it without pushing in. If the bus that arrives isn't mine I turn to the Preston behind me and say "I don't want this one " then if they do they can walk past me. If that has worked for the almost 40 years I've been alive I don't understand why all of a sudden people can't manage it.

WhatNoRaisins · 10/02/2024 16:20

Queuing only works for me when it's people standing in an obvious line. I'm not really interested in strangers that I come across in public so I don't think I would remember which people were at a bus stop before me. I'd be thinking about other things.

How does that work if the bus stops anywhere along the queue

Say at the back of it. Does everyone stand there waiting seems slow

Imo let those who need to get in first, elderly etc and most people do

Then it’s a mix around the bus stop, I can’t say I care much if someone gets on before me

They always stop in the same place here. So here a queue would work. If people bothered. But for some unfathomable reason they don't.

EasternStandard · 10/02/2024 16:25

They never do here could be anywhere so it’s a bit pointless to queue
