To think jumping the bus queue is just rude?

It happens pretty much daily.
Either I will walk to the stop and a man will be waiting.
Other people come from the other side of road and stop the other side of the man.
The bus comes and he gets on and they walk on after him (I must be invisible )
Or there's a queue at the bus stop and people walk to front of the bus from top of bus shelter and just get on.
It drives me mad
And it's just plain rude
Aibu and is it just every man for themselves ?

There is a bloke who resembles Wayne Rooney who does this on my bus every morning. Actively barges his way in to be first on and get his preferred seat, regardless of anyone else who was there before him. I think he’s vile.

LaraMargot · 09/02/2024 16:07

It's not just rude, it's inconsiderate and antisocial. HTH.

DdyDaisyDaresYou · 09/02/2024 16:11

Obviously, it all hinges on whether you're giving the bus to your son or not

10ThousandSpoons · 09/02/2024 16:15

In all honesty it depends where in the journey the bus is and the time of day as to if this bothers me. If it's commuting time and there is a chance the bus will be full then yes it's rude. If its the middle of the day or at the start and it's obvious you will all get on then tbh I'd rather we all just got on quickly and got on with it. I have been on far too many buses where people have spent ages queueing and letting people on in order for NO REASON as the bus only had two people on it. Order for loading if there are enough seats should be any one who is going to struggle or needs a priority seat, any one who just missed the bus before, then everyone else, then the person who turned up last unless they fit in the aforementioned category. It can also be complicated by payment method. Yes everyone should be contact less but some people might have a ticket on their phone that once activated has a count down this causes TIME pressure for them to get on the bus. Another delay to loading time is people who stand at the front blocking the entrance/exit route. They need to sit down or MOVE DOWN THE BUS. Which they never do. Also manspreaders and people who hog a seat with a bag - they mean people can't plonk their bum on a seat and get out the way. These people should be removed from the bus.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 09/02/2024 16:16

YABU because it doesn't matter? It's not like the bus will leave any sooner.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 09/02/2024 16:35

everyone should be contact less

No they shouldn't

venusandmars · 09/02/2024 16:50

Where I live there is excellent bus queue etiquette. People in the bus shelter get on first, those waiting outside it get on after.

LlynTegid · 09/02/2024 17:25

I was told years ago by someone who worked for a London bus company that queueing had been officially abolished. Apparently bus stop signs used to say which side of the stop to queue.

Yes sorry , thanks for correcting me - Everyone will probably be able to use contactless but there will be some who aren't

I understand that on a sunny day but on a rainy day it's a bit unfair

WickerMam · 09/02/2024 18:03

It is a bit rude, are you sure you are looking sharp in your queue spot? People who queue too casually are also annoying.

It is illogical though. I always remember two old ladies I'd been chatting to at a bus stop letting me go on first, as I was rushing to catch a train.

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/02/2024 18:05

@LlynTegid Yeah, we don't have bus queues in London, it's an every person for themselves free for all. But not getting on a bus is not a hardship when there will be another one along in 5 mins.

By contrast not standing demurely to the side to let tube passengers off first will earn you lots of side eye and loud tuts

Justleaveitblankthen · 09/02/2024 22:35

Do you think they are from overseas and not familiar with our very British Queuing etiquette?
Having spent years abroad, this still drives me insane.
Same with holding doors open for people.. For them to just saunter through without a glance, let alone a thanks. 😖

tralalalalalalalal · 10/02/2024 03:37

It's not a queue if you're the only one queuing!

Halfwaytheree · 10/02/2024 04:20

To be honest I don’t really get buses, so it wouldn’t occur to me that there’s a “queue” based on who got to the bus stop first. If there’s an organised single file queue, sure - but if it’s a scattered group of people all stood around the vicinity of a bus stop, I’m not going to be able to remember who was stood where first. I think when you get public transport, you need a mix of looking out for others and looking out for yourself. Sometimes you let others go first, sometimes you use sharp elbows.

BlackberrySky · 10/02/2024 04:28

I think it depends on the setting. Rural bus stop with one bus route that comes once an hour - yes queue. Urban bus stop with several, frequent routes stopping there - impossible to know who's waiting for which bus, and even if you didn't get on, there's another one in five minutes anyway.

YABU. I don't mind a queue, but queues at bus stops are just weird.
Bus comes everyone gets on. order depends where the bus lands. End of.

They would hate to see our train station, it's every man women and child for themselves.
Same with the bus, never seen a line up where I get on. People get off and we get on.
It just works for some reason.

Charlieradioalphapapa · 10/02/2024 04:33

Bus queues are not what they were . I’m in my 60s and until about 15 years ago they were pretty orderely like supermarket or post office queues.

Now, (well in urban areas) multiple services run from the one stop. So you’ve got people who are there for eg the 6, 6A, 6S and 38. They all have different timings and no one knows who’s waiting for which. Some shelters have seats so someone who arrived earlier or just wants to sit down, is sort of out of the queue and the people who are stood up in some sort of queue generally get on first when the bus turns up.

some very large shelters can have 6 or 7 services stopping there and people have no clue where to wait for which. It’s often unclear. So they turn into free for alls.

KimberleyClark · 10/02/2024 04:47

I think some people, when there is a queue and it’s obvious what direction it goes in, pretend they haven’t realised and hang around at the front hoping that someone will let them in or they’ll get a chance to push in.

I agree with this, plus it's also an efficiency thing. No time to faff around

I don't want to use it most of the time.

Exactly this.
I live rurally now and it's polite to get on roughly in the order you arrived.
When I lived in a city at least 5 buses stopped at the same stop - one of the biggest pains was making sure you still saw your bus/driver saw you if it approached when 2 plus other buses were already stopped there! I used to help folk who needed it but there was definitely a free for all element too.

You don't HAVE to use it. I was saying those that don't cause delays getting on. Which is fine but if they are using a timed app ticket then this creates a time pressure for their boarding so I can understand why they get a bit pressured to get on if they have a count down staring at them as they've activated their ticket too soon. I don't care what method people use to pay.

Contactless can cause delays too.
It takes very little time to pop exact change in the machine.

Except the 93. It's the rule that you queue for the 93 at Morden Station and there's a definite side to the stop that the queue goes!
