Taylor Swift tickets

WonderWoman17 · 07/02/2024 09:09

I realise this will be frowned upon by a lot of people but hear me out. I'm lucky enough to have been able to buy 4 very decent tickets to see Taylor Swift in August this year in London. I'm a big fan, the plan was to go with family, although the 'kids' are grown they enjoy her music and are happy to come along for the experience more than being fans.

The dilemma I have is that tickets are so rare and the tour seems to be such a phenomenon that people are willing to pay an extortionate amount for them. As a family that are struggling with cost of living and have a bit of debt, I find myself in the position on considering whether to advertise these tickets for way above what I paid for them (£190 a ticket). I have seen them advertised for as much as over £2k a ticket, and I find myself thinking if there is a parent out there that has the funds/means and motivation to want to pay £8k for these tickets, would I be an idiot for not selling them?

Again, trying to make this something it isn't.
I like some male and some female artists.
I dislike some male and some female artists.
Most of my male and female friends feel the same.
I just think this particular female artist is a great big marketing project, a very well executed marketing project that loads of folk love (and that's their choice), but a marketing project nonetheless.

EVERYBODY in the music industry is a marketing project. This is why music videos were created and why video killed the radio star.

I'm not a TS fan but to attack her for being successful at marketing her brand is sexist.

Sad for genuine fans who couldn't get tickets.

Hopefully a scammer will buy them off you and withold payment.

No need for such a nasty comment.

Everyone in the music industry markets themselves to some degree.
TS is actually a product designed to fill a perceived gap in the market - every single aspect of her music career is part of that project. I am presuming she is happy with that arrangement.

The way you keep referring to her as a product is really creepy.

She's not a blow up doll.

Please don't misuse that term.

starlight889 · 07/02/2024 15:54

That’s what I am wondering. And it was such a faff that needed preplanning to get tickets so it wasn’t just a spur of the moment thing either.

Ktime · 07/02/2024 15:55

Wasbedeudetetdas · 07/02/2024 15:53

That's what repeatedly referring to a successful young woman as 'product' is.

Her act (not her) is a product though. It's sold and consumed.
She, as a person with a private life away from the act, is more than the public persona/act, clearly.

I have replied above.
Again, stop misusing that term.
I haven't once attacked her, I have pointed out that TS (or the act called TS) is a product, a brand, something people buy (and consume).

Flamingo68 · 07/02/2024 15:59

Just because people are advertising tickets for 2k doesn’t mean people are buying for that price. Anyone who tries to resell other than through Ticketmaster or AXS are, in my opinion, scammers who I would never buy a ticket from!

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 07/02/2024 16:00

My point though @Wasbedeudetetdas is that I don't actually understand what you mean when you suggest that TS is 'a marketing project'.

Do you mean you think she is unique in having powerful marketing behind her? Really? Or do you think that there are fundamental untruths about her as an artist, covered up by 'marketing' eg: that she doesn't really write her own songs, or something like that? Do you think that the stadiums are full of paid attendees rather than actual fans, or something? Do you think its somehow all fake?

I'm a 50 year old cynical grumpy cow who mainly listens to obscure indie, and yet her music makes me cry (or laugh, or want to dance, or shout!) 'It's just marketing' is just such a lazy dismissal and I honestly want to understand why you think it's a legitimate criticism.

Why are you backtracking? You have said:

"she is essentially a marketing product in action"
"The product is well made."

It's extremely sexist language.

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 07/02/2024 16:03

Huh? That is literally the definition of 'popular culture'. So you think the same about The Beatles, or Talking Heads, or The Last Dinner Party, I assume?

What gap in the market? We have Kylie, Beyonce, Rihanna, Adele, Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande and dozens more that I can't remember the names of. If she's been designed to fill a gap in the solo female market it's pretty saturated already. Are you Kanye West?

Anyway I suspect the original question may be moot. There are only two ways to sell TS tickets, through AXS and Ticketmaster transfer. Any other way could result in the tickets being voided. some places insist on the lead buyer being present with Photo ID. With electronic tickets it's much easier to crack down on this stuff. We tried to get into Elbow at The Roundhouse with ebay bought tickets a few years ago and didn't make it.

I am not backtracking, I am trying to answer you with different words (because you don't like/understand my initial ones).

She is a marketing product - who the whole marketing team are we don't know, but she is probably a (sizeable) part of it! Her image, her music, her persona has all been manufactured to fill what was a perceived gap. Clearly she also has talent as a singer/songwriter and is decent looking, and thus is able to present the product in an effective way. How much of the presented personality is really her, and how much is built/adapted to suit what she thinks will gain her support, only she and her team know. I also think that she does present some messages which are important, and wise, but again some of that is part of the 'act'. The product is well made, clearly, because lots of people buy into it and enjoy it- which is absolutely fine!

There is obviously also a real person behind the act, a separate identity who is a distinct character away from the TS brand.

@TheSandHurtsMyFeelings this may partly answer your question?

Anyway, I didn't intend to digress so much @WonderWoman17 but was answering questions. Hope you decide what to do!

Sadly many men are still threatened by a beautiful, successful young woman, especially if they can't shag her.

I'm not saying anyone is a man here, just that that attitudes pervades society.

I think people in the industry are threatened by her marketing, not necessarily her.

(Call that an 'attack' if you like, but it's really an observation.)

Just popping back to plug the best singer/songwriter in the world, Judie Tzuke who has a new album out and is touring in the autumn. Here live at Glastonbury 100 years ago.

Well marketed is not the same as successful. 'Well marketed' is begrudging and mealy mouthed and dismisses the people who like TS as mindless sheep who don't have minds of their own and like what they're told to like. Which is an interesting hypothesis if applied to all artists, less so when you pick on one young woman.

Why would they be threatened by her? She's propping up the music economy which benefits the music world.

This comment was actually in reply to someone saying it was sexist to call her a product.

I agree all acts are marketed products, but the marketing aspect is much more apparent with TS.

As an aside, were the Beatles suits not designed to make them appeal to a certain market? The songs and personality weren't adapted in quite the same way though.

fluffycatkins · 07/02/2024 16:21

I considered this last year in the USA.
As I ended up with four seats in two different locations.
We ended up all going and it was an experience but I have a dc who is a massive fan and she took a friend with her.

But we didn't need the money if we did I absolutely would have done this because it would have been enough money for a family holiday for a week.
