DH and his flag pole dream….

1000 replies

Lilysienna1 · 02/02/2024 23:51

DH mentioned a few years ago, that he has ‘always wanted’ to have a flag on display in the front garden. A proper flag on a pole, that we would raise up every morning, and ‘fly at half mast’ when the occasion calls for it.

I have never ever even thought of having a flag. We are British and I know it’s quite common in America, but not so much here. DH isn’t a football fan, so it’s nothing to do with the flag flying we see during the World Cup and the like.

last year, for Christmas he said the only present he would wish for, was to have that flag. He was most disappointed with the watch and aftershave he received instead.

He has now mentioned it to 13 year old DD who thinks it’s ‘kinda cool’ and she could imagine using it behind her for tik tok dances.

So now, I’m being made out to be highly unreasonable and a bore, for saying I do not want to raise a bloody flag every morning and see it outside the front of my house every day. I did try to compromise by saying ‘maybe’ a small one in the back garden, but DH says it’s to go out the front only, and why should we be ashamed of patriotism.

We don’t live in a grand estate home, just a detached house in a redrow cul-de-sac. The neighbours wouldn’t be affected as there are large trees between our only neigbours drive and ours, and we are on the corner.

However, everyone that comes in and out our road will see it as it’s the first house.

what would you do?? Give in and say yes to DH and his flag pole or put your foot down? Am I really being that unreasonable and boring? Does anyone else fly a flag? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Arse can’t grasp this basic fact that it is racist to assume all flag wavers are white in the first place!!

🙄

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 03/02/2024 21:59

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow
Right, so now it's 'offensive and aggressive' to have national pride. But ok to compare me to someone who is known for racism.

I think it’s a good idea to report posts that accuse others like that. It’s really unacceptable.

How many unacceptable posts have you had deleted from this thread today? It's at least three of your replies to me...

BirthdayRainbow · 03/02/2024 22:00

I want a flag pole too and I do think there's an embarrassment at being patriotic. A house in the next road has a flag pole in their front garden and they use it to fly the Liverpool football club flag.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 03/02/2024 22:00

@BirthdayRainbow

Get one! Don't be embarrassed

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/02/2024 21:56

I’m assuming nothing. I’m white. I’m not racist and don’t care what colour anyone is.

But you did assume that flag wavers could not be Muslim or of colour, that it is inconceivable to you that they might be actually proud of the U.K., their home. Otherwise you wouldn’t have come out with the EDL comment. I don’t know anyone of mixed heritage that SUPPORTS the defunct EDL.

How do you know Huckleberry’s heritage??

Diversion · 03/02/2024 22:01

I would love a flag pole and would fly lots of random flags, band flags, festival flags, the Jolly Roger but not the Union Jack or any other country flag. Our son has a flag pole and flies his business flag and others including the Union Jack which his neighbour who also has a flag pole and flies lots of flags informed him was upside down.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Sounds like you need to find a different country to live in.

You can't have it both ways.

I assume you celebrate British values of tolerance and democracy.

You can't then think people who disagree with you should therefore leave the country.

Only on your estate it appears.

doilooklikeicare · 03/02/2024 22:06

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow totally agree with it being hijacked!

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 22:06

It’s our flag not theirs, and not yours.

I also notice the classism is also prevalent amongst the bigots on here.

If you have a semi you can’t hang a flag if you live in a Cotswold Manor House or similar it’s far more acceptable for some reason.

Surely if you have a semi you are already at half mast?

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 03/02/2024 22:07

@MasterBeth

I'm not saying she has to leave the country. It sounds like she would be happier elsewhere if seeing a British flag is so aggressive and offensive.

doilooklikeicare · 03/02/2024 22:07

@Newchapterbeckons I don't live on an "estate", not that that's relevant, but I agree with @ArseInTheCoOpWindow, is that ok?

MrsToriCostner · 03/02/2024 22:07

Odd.

Doesn't he get a say?

Yes. He gets to say they'll have a flag, she chooses which flag. It might cool his enthusiasm Grin

A ridiculous statement. Being able to criticise our country, our government, our flag, our monarchy is our absolute right as British citizens.

The Union flag is my flag as much as it is Tommy Robinson's, yours or @Newchapterbeckons . You don't get to define what it means, what it stands for or how it's perceived.

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 22:12

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/02/2024 22:08

You clearly don’t live in a sweet little village. With your extreme views. Otherwise you would know bunting and flags are celebratory and not something to be ashamed of.

So I repeat my question to coop: what exactly do you mean by hijacked?
