DH and his flag pole dream….

1000 replies

Lilysienna1 · 02/02/2024 23:51

DH mentioned a few years ago, that he has ‘always wanted’ to have a flag on display in the front garden. A proper flag on a pole, that we would raise up every morning, and ‘fly at half mast’ when the occasion calls for it.

I have never ever even thought of having a flag. We are British and I know it’s quite common in America, but not so much here. DH isn’t a football fan, so it’s nothing to do with the flag flying we see during the World Cup and the like.

last year, for Christmas he said the only present he would wish for, was to have that flag. He was most disappointed with the watch and aftershave he received instead.

He has now mentioned it to 13 year old DD who thinks it’s ‘kinda cool’ and she could imagine using it behind her for tik tok dances.

So now, I’m being made out to be highly unreasonable and a bore, for saying I do not want to raise a bloody flag every morning and see it outside the front of my house every day. I did try to compromise by saying ‘maybe’ a small one in the back garden, but DH says it’s to go out the front only, and why should we be ashamed of patriotism.

We don’t live in a grand estate home, just a detached house in a redrow cul-de-sac. The neighbours wouldn’t be affected as there are large trees between our only neigbours drive and ours, and we are on the corner.

However, everyone that comes in and out our road will see it as it’s the first house.

what would you do?? Give in and say yes to DH and his flag pole or put your foot down? Am I really being that unreasonable and boring? Does anyone else fly a flag? 🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s too busy. The French flag has similar colours but in blocks. It’s not broken down and frenetic looking.

But all this aside the union jack illustrates aggression to me. More than anything else.

But coop, has France not had aggression in its history? Why does blocking the colours absolve them of history? Every nation has a “ history,” and because they are composed of humans who make human errors, some of that history will reflect that.

I'm not sure what/who Tomeh is?

Tommy Robinson

LadyBird1973 · 03/02/2024 21:34

The 'Tomeh' thing was just snarky and unnecessary

I assume she means the Tommy Robinson, she is extremely aggressive and offensive but doesn’t have the courage of her convictions. Otherwise she would simply say it - but knows she can’t accuse you directly of supporting the EDL Despite them being defunct. It’s despicable.

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 21:37

I think it’s a good idea to report posts that accuse others like that. It’s really unacceptable.

BruFord · 03/02/2024 21:37

@Anonymouseposter Yes, it was showing solidarity, but I also don’t think that any of us would judge a Ukrainian citizen for displaying their own flag , would we?

As PP’s have said, It doesn’t make sense that another country’s national flag was/is acceptable to display, but your own isn’t. It’s almost like a form of self-loathing!

Yeah France has had aggression. Absolutely.

But the Tricoloure represents the Revolution. A bloody Revolution. But it stands for is it? Egalite, Liberte and fraternate? These are good values.

I don’t think the British flag represents these values. It represents belligerence and obedience to the Royal Family. I don’t want those values.I’m a republican. Although it seems l should be reported to Prevent for this!

Anonymouseposter · 03/02/2024 21:39

Tomeh is an attempt to refer to Tommy Robinson in a “Northern “ accent. I agree he’s objectionable but 🙄

No ‘she’ couldn’t briefly remember his surname. But obviously this is despicable.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

So your response to someone saying they are proud to be British is accusing them of being a racist?

I absolutely reject your implication. My pride in being British is related to all of the positive things this country has achieved. I made a comment earlier denouncing the ugly things that have happened under the banner of the British Empire.

In fact, one the things I am most proud of is the multicultural society we have.

You know your arguments are rubbish when you have to resort to personal attacks.

I'll say it again. It's absolutely ridiculous that pride in the country you were born, and her flag, is seen as racist in any way.

If you're so embarrassed of the flag and what it stands for, perhaps you should find another country that suits your values better.

Edited

I don’t loathe myself or my nationality. I do dislike patriotism that goes too far. As I said I dislike flag waving in general except for a bit of fun competition in sports etc

Well said, 👏🏻 you don’t need to defend yourself against the haters. I understand exactly how you feel, as do the majority according to the poll.

Where have l attacked anyone?

I have however been subject to many personal attack.

Been called despicable disgusting, etc etc. I’ve not referred to anyone like this in my posts.

No one has accused you of being part of the EDL. To most of us that is the most offensive thing you could possibly say. Have you ANY idea how dangerous and awful they are?

Why say such a nasty thing to a pp, and attack them in that way for simply loving and caring about their country.

You really should hang your head in shame but not for the same reasons you imagine.

It says something, doesn't it, that you would assume that someone proud of their country must be racist. What does that say about you? Couldn't a black person say they were proud to be British? Or are you assuming British=white?

I didn’t even realise. I found her views quite offensive and aggressive and very right wing.

So not a follower of TR, but still unpleasant views to me.

SweetBirdsong · 03/02/2024 20:48

100% this. ^ As I said to another poster, these people slating and bashing the UK flag/the England flag would never say such nasty things to people of different heritages.

.

No, I wouldn't, because it's much ruder to criticise someone else's culture than your own. That's just traditional English politeness.

Arse can’t grasp this basic fact that it is racist to assume all flag wavers are white in the first place!!

I’m assuming nothing. I’m white. I’m not racist and don’t care what colour anyone is.
