DH and his flag pole dream….

1000 replies

Lilysienna1 · 02/02/2024 23:51

DH mentioned a few years ago, that he has ‘always wanted’ to have a flag on display in the front garden. A proper flag on a pole, that we would raise up every morning, and ‘fly at half mast’ when the occasion calls for it.

I have never ever even thought of having a flag. We are British and I know it’s quite common in America, but not so much here. DH isn’t a football fan, so it’s nothing to do with the flag flying we see during the World Cup and the like.

last year, for Christmas he said the only present he would wish for, was to have that flag. He was most disappointed with the watch and aftershave he received instead.

He has now mentioned it to 13 year old DD who thinks it’s ‘kinda cool’ and she could imagine using it behind her for tik tok dances.

So now, I’m being made out to be highly unreasonable and a bore, for saying I do not want to raise a bloody flag every morning and see it outside the front of my house every day. I did try to compromise by saying ‘maybe’ a small one in the back garden, but DH says it’s to go out the front only, and why should we be ashamed of patriotism.

We don’t live in a grand estate home, just a detached house in a redrow cul-de-sac. The neighbours wouldn’t be affected as there are large trees between our only neigbours drive and ours, and we are on the corner.

However, everyone that comes in and out our road will see it as it’s the first house.

what would you do?? Give in and say yes to DH and his flag pole or put your foot down? Am I really being that unreasonable and boring? Does anyone else fly a flag? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Would you call a family with African heritage hanging their flag ‘tacky’ ? No, I didn’t think so. You only ‘see’ certain forms of racism.

Where has racism come into it at all?!! I haven’t once mentioned race, or any specific country’s flag at all.

How many times do I have to say I think a big flagpole erected outside a normal everyday house looks tacky, without people willfully misinterpreting it and trying to twist it into something it’s not.

seriously get a grip. I don’t have to like flagpoles. It doesn’t make me a racist 😂

100% this. ^ As I said to another poster, these people slating and bashing the UK flag/the England flag would never say such nasty things to people of different heritages.

.

0% this actually because that comment was directed at me and I’ve not once mentioned any country’s flag, UK or otherwise.

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 20:18

Prevent is there to do just that in all its forms.

😂😂😂😂😂

I used to work with Prevent. I think they had bigger fish to fry.

Thementalloadisreal · 03/02/2024 20:54

A flagpole outside a normal house looks ridiculous. As would a massive mast with a sail. Or a moat and drawbridge.

ThinWomansBrain · 03/02/2024 20:55

Probably sees it as some kind of willy extension/display😂

I think this post has got confused as some people have objected to the flag itself, but I don’t actually think mentalload has linked flagpole objection to the flag.

I also think a lot of people can have squeamishness around the flag ( which I think is a shame myself) without actually hating the country.

BruFord · 03/02/2024 20:56

Thementalloadisreal · 03/02/2024 20:29

I haven’t said anything about the country’s flag.
You won’t convince me that someone with a flagpole outside their 3 bed semi detached house has good taste. That’s all. It looks stupid. I’m free to judge people for doing stupid things and I’m not moving in any direction, dangerous or otherwise.

Edit to add, I sometimes drive past a house with a skull and crossbones flag on a massive flagpole. It looks stupid. I’m judging the stylistic choices and taste of a person choosing to erect a massive flagpole outside their terraced house. Yes people are free to make their own tacky choices. And I am free to judge them for it.

Edited

Fair enough, @Thementalloadisreal, we’re agreed that people should be free to make their own tacky choices, including the OP’s DH!

You are happy to put down the British flag and be insulting - would you do the same with a flag from Ghana?

LadyBird1973 · 03/02/2024 20:57

Flags aren't just a bit of material flapping around - they represent home. We drape coffins in the flag - they do matter!
There's a lot to be proud of in this country - the freedom to have this conversation, whatever your opinion, for a start! I think it's a beautiful place. Yes, there's a lot that needs fixing, but that is a reflection on the failures of government. We have a rich culture and that's something we should appreciate and celebrate. It's sad that some people are so filled with disdain for their own country - I think that damages us all

It certainly does make you racist if you would refrain from saying it about any other country, inc African countries. It means you are being deliberately discriminatory.

Yes, @LadyBird1973 , it’s easy to forget that simply having the freedom to discuss this topic or fly a flag of your choosing is hugely important. Many people never experience this level of freedom.

I said l worked with Prevent not for.

I don’t hold anti British values. I’m allowed to hate the Proms the Royal Family and be ashamed of the Union Jack. Most of the people l worked with felt the same. I’m not looking to harm Britain because if these relatively normal views.

You're very rabid aren’t you?

But do we know the poster WOULD refrain from that? Or would that be tacky too?

I’m all for pride in the flag; but it’s important not to conflate flagpole hating with flag hating.

Actually I’m not really against flagpoles either but probably wouldn’t have my own. After this thread definitely wouldn’t.

Well thank fuck for that. I work in a profession not dissimilar and your values and behaviour would cause concern.

Do you recognise that racism can be directed at white people as well? Do you even understand that?

Why would you be ‘ashamed’ of the Union Jack exactly?

Oh yup: is ashamed of the flag…

Newchapterbeckons · 03/02/2024 21:16

I also notice the classism is also prevalent amongst the bigots on here.

If you have a semi you can’t hang a flag if you live in a Cotswold Manor House or similar it’s far more acceptable for some reason.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 03/02/2024 21:16

@Rosscameasdoody

Yup. You summed it up. While history is full of ugly events, there is plenty to be proud of too. I'm sick of feeling like I should apologize for being proud of my identity.

What absolute unbelievable nonsense that flying an English flag would make someone think you were a racist bigot. That says more about their small minded views to be honest.
