DH and his flag pole dream….

1000 replies

Lilysienna1 · 02/02/2024 23:51

DH mentioned a few years ago, that he has ‘always wanted’ to have a flag on display in the front garden. A proper flag on a pole, that we would raise up every morning, and ‘fly at half mast’ when the occasion calls for it.

I have never ever even thought of having a flag. We are British and I know it’s quite common in America, but not so much here. DH isn’t a football fan, so it’s nothing to do with the flag flying we see during the World Cup and the like.

last year, for Christmas he said the only present he would wish for, was to have that flag. He was most disappointed with the watch and aftershave he received instead.

He has now mentioned it to 13 year old DD who thinks it’s ‘kinda cool’ and she could imagine using it behind her for tik tok dances.

So now, I’m being made out to be highly unreasonable and a bore, for saying I do not want to raise a bloody flag every morning and see it outside the front of my house every day. I did try to compromise by saying ‘maybe’ a small one in the back garden, but DH says it’s to go out the front only, and why should we be ashamed of patriotism.

We don’t live in a grand estate home, just a detached house in a redrow cul-de-sac. The neighbours wouldn’t be affected as there are large trees between our only neigbours drive and ours, and we are on the corner.

However, everyone that comes in and out our road will see it as it’s the first house.

what would you do?? Give in and say yes to DH and his flag pole or put your foot down? Am I really being that unreasonable and boring? Does anyone else fly a flag? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Well thank fuck for that. I work in a profession not dissimilar and your values and behaviour would cause concern.

Do you recognise that racism can be directed at white people as well? Do you even understand that?

Why would you be ‘ashamed’ of the Union Jack exactly?

I’m not racist about white people. I’m not racist at all.

I dislike the belligerent Little Englander’s and Brexit idiots who hijack the Union Jack.

Why do l hate it?
I feel it looks aggressive. When l see it l find it angry looking. It represents a time that is no longer relevant. I might feel different if we had a different flag. I don’t like the association with militarism. I don’t like the association with nationalism and old fashioned Jingoism. I feel it is the flag of a belligerent and aggressive nation. Not internal but in terms of foreign policy. I don’t really want to buy into that.

Maybe if it was a dove or a tree l would feel completely different. It’s all jagged angles and aggressive colours.

If you looked at the article I posted the majority of Britains are ambivalent about their country. Some feel shame. I feel shame really. Our horrible plundering Commonwealth history.

But this doesn’t make me a terrorist, worth of Prevent. You are misinterpretaing shame and hatred. The 2 are completely different.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 03/02/2024 21:18

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Sounds like you need to find a different country to live in.

Anonymouseposter · 03/02/2024 21:18

Apart from sporting events and similar I don’t like flag waving anywhere to be honest. The USA approach doesn’t appeal to me at all. Flags do represent things. People keep referring to the British Flag. Flying a Union flag in North West Wales wouldn’t go down well. Personally I wouldn’t live in a house flying a flag outside.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 03/02/2024 21:19

It looks that way because it combines the flags of the kingdoms united

"Aggressive colours"?

I'm not even sure where to start with that!

You do realise we wouldn’t even be having this conversation if it were not for the military?

I don’t think I have ever met a little Englander is that just a slur for someone that is patriotic.

Your views are extraordinarily small minded and myopic. It sounds like you have an echo chamber to support your narrow view and have done nothing to educate yourself on the issues.

Never!

I now what it’s based on. It’s a shit design though ( long time career in design)

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 03/02/2024 21:23

There are a bunch of complete snowflakes in here, shameful that people are implying or outright saying our flag represents racist ideals. It's people like that that will cause the country to collapse. Self hatred is always destructive. Have some pride in where you came from and never apologize for being British.

@Anonymouseposter Did you feel this way about the Ukrainian flags displayed in so many windows?

I'm not trying to be pedantic, just genuinely wondering how you felt about it given that you dislike flag waving anywhere.

I could say the same.

But you are aggressive. I just try to explain. Wonder why l think it’s an aggressive flag?
Maybe the people that worship it are like that?

What do you think?

So if you know what it represents, how do you see something that was designed to show unity as “ aggressive colours”? I guess red maybe but so many flags have red. White?! Blue?

I don’t know anyone at all in fifty years that feels ‘shame’ about the U.K. so I can’t warrant your article with anything other than politically motivated propaganda.

plundering? What century are you even talking about?

Are you even British? Your grasp of history seems limited.

BruFord · 03/02/2024 21:26

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow Tbf, so many flags are downright ugly and garish. Presumably so they can be clearly identified when displayed on shipping vessels, for example.

Pastel colors might not be easy to identify. 😂

LadyBird1973 · 03/02/2024 21:27

I think it's quite appealing as flags go. I'd like to see the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 in there somewhere as well.

It’s too busy. The French flag has similar colours but in blocks. It’s not broken down and frenetic looking.

But all this aside the union jack illustrates aggression to me. More than anything else.

Yes, l was born in Leeds. Have an A grade history A level. ( British history) Nearly did history degree but decided not to

Im 60. I know plenty.

I didn’t see many Ukrainian flags here in North Wales but I do think it might be different because people were showing the flag of another country, not their own, in an attempt to show solidarity. A slightly different sentiment

Did you ask for your money back?

I will ask you again in what century did the British empire ‘plunder’ the commonwealth?
