If VAT is added on Private School Fees, then it will be added onto University fees as well

AgathaCrispee · 31/01/2024 08:06

Does it worry you that this new policy of adding VAT on educational fees will also be applied to university fees as well?

AIBU to think this will put university out of the reach of the majority of families who will support their kids through Uni?

Also, for those who do go the level of debt they will come out with will be really big.

If they can apply VAT to private school educational fees then they've setup a case for Independent schools argue that it must be applied to Uni as well.

Is this going to create a situation where only the wealthy can send their kids to Uni?

I'm wondering why no one is asking this question!!

What is so difficult to understand? That I can’t afford private school for 4 kids?

Araminta1003 · 01/02/2024 16:51

So I chose outstanding state schools and appreciate the privilege to have that choice! Doesn’t stop me feeling sorry for those living in the regions who may suffer with this VAT policy on private schools because they earn eg 75k on a doctor’s salary and apparently that makes them rich?

I’m not sure what the issue is there either

yes but if you could you would have. So not an ethical barrier. Just financial.

Plus you attended private boarding school describe deriving your background as “working class” (go figure)

and you husband did for this entire schooling

Paellaaaa · 01/02/2024 17:00

I seriously don’t think you need to feel
sorry for anybody earning £75k.

I’m staggered state six form colleges are paying VAT whilst private schools haven’t been. State kids are already disadvantaged in the UCAS process. The fact kids in big six form colleges have also had money taken away from their education that would help with UCAS, equipment and teachers whilst private schools have been exempt is just beyond belief.

Araminta1003 · 01/02/2024 17:00

I am not going to be a coward and name change, intimidation tactics do not work on me.
Just cold hard fact, that is why I could never engage in real politics, too much hot air, lack of hard based evidence.
My Labour MP cannot explain this VAT policy and does not understand the difference between it and charitable status.
Besides, like I said I am more concerned with keeping our laws in line with EU laws and concepts.
But yes I have been accused of being a Tory in disguise on another thread who may have masked us a Labour member, then voted for Corbyn to make the Labour Party unelectable. That was the most amusing accusation so far yet on MN.

shewasrooting · 01/02/2024 17:01

that is why I could never engage in real politics, too much hot air, lack of hard based evidence.

but you do think the younger generation should do. Ok

shewasrooting · 01/02/2024 17:01

intimidation tactics do not work on me.

oh don’t be silly! 😂

Rosesanddaisies1 · 01/02/2024 17:02

Lindaofoxford · 31/01/2024 08:08

Private schools currently have charitable status and so VAT exempt. Unis don’t. You are comparing apples with pears.

This. Stupid question.

shewasrooting · 01/02/2024 17:02

quite simply your posting history is littered with detail that reveals a very jumbled experience and stance on the issue

(and a very peculiar definition of “working class”)

Araminta1003 · 01/02/2024 17:05

“but you do think the younger generation should do. Ok”

No I said they should run mock elections and “vote”. The devil is in the detail….

I vote, I just won’t campaign and sell hot air. Big difference!

shewasrooting · 01/02/2024 17:07

We need to get the next generation involved in the election.

and i simply asked what you were doing by way of being involved in the election

and you have confirmed you never ever would because so thoroughly unappealing to you 🤷‍♀️

Araminta1003 · 01/02/2024 17:08

I would never ever pretend to be working class in a MN sense.

What I might have said is that I think the Labour Party should represent the working people from disabled youth with a part time job (provided by the State or a charity even if there is a cost associated) and pay some tax all the way to the CEOs earning millions and paying millions in taxes. They should be the party of those who value work and they should value work per se for all and paying taxes so everyone is properly in the system and feels part of it and has a say in it and shows up to vote.

You said you did not have a “privileged background”

You said you had a “working class background”

You said you went to private boarding school for sixth form as your parents got jobs abroad

Araminta1003 · 01/02/2024 17:11

Yes armed forces. DH also on full paid scholarship/bursary, so what?

shewasrooting · 01/02/2024 17:12

you don’t need to think about what you may have said

here it is directly

Iam not from a privileged background. I am from a working class background, and I know that children only get one chance

shewasrooting · 01/02/2024 17:13

Araminta1003 · 01/02/2024 17:11

both parents in the military

and the army paid for private schooling?

they would have been officers. Working class? 🤔

Araminta1003 · 01/02/2024 17:14

So this is now a class thread?

Araminta1003 · 01/02/2024 17:15

Please link the exact thread @shewasrooting - the devil is in the detail…

It is perfectly fair and reasonable to levy VAT on private schools.

Universities, on the other hand, need to be reimagined, although in a going back to the future kind of way.

We have some great universities and some very average ones. It really doesn’t serve most young people well to be educated beyond 18. Asking them to get into debt to achieve very little and then giving them a meaningless piece of paper with an inflated degree on it is basically conning them. They would be better off starting work at 18.

This would also solve some of the demographic problems we are battling with the young population providing 3 more years of productive work.

Universities should be for the top 10% who can really benefit from exploring subjects in greater depth than advanced level study at school. These people should be really helped by the government, maybe with non repayable loans as long as they pay uk tax for 20 years (or something similar). When I was at uni, we had means-tested grants, but only about 6% of the country went to uni, so this was very affordable.

In the above scenario, VAT wouldn’t be an issue,

shewasrooting · 01/02/2024 17:16

Araminta1003 · 01/02/2024 17:14

So this is now a class thread?

ah it likes that now.

so you don’t think class and a discussion regarding private/ state schools is relevant?

My family is also full of high ranking army/diplomatic services/intelligence so boarding is not only the expectation, but also suits a lot of the personalities

and also i have a working class background.

interesting

No.

Araminta1003 · 01/02/2024 17:19

My mother was a poor emigrant from an ex Soviet state. Is class defined maternally or paternally?
