Again with the food threads...as much as I love hearing what people like, I also love hearing what people hate!

So, what is the one (or a few) foods you tried and thought were vile and would never try again?

The main one that springs to my mind is whelks. wtf even are they meant to be? Its just impenetrable rubber with no taste...lol.

So, share your revulsions or argue the cause for something unlovable?
C'mon you know you want to! : )

A pig snout cooked especially for me by a family in Spain

macshoto · 02/02/2024 18:06

Almost nothing I don't eat...

Honey bee larvae (hachinoko)
Horse carpaccio (basashi)
Cod testes (shirako)
Chicken sashimi
Chicken cartilage
etc.

All of those eaten in Japan and found fine.

Only thing I don't eat is banana(!) and not a big fan of okra or bitter gourd.

macshoto · 02/02/2024 18:12

Oh another one I won't repeat was squirrel casserole...

HoneyButterPopcorn · 02/02/2024 18:16

Noooooooo. Not basil brush!

mathanxiety · 02/02/2024 18:20

Was he not a fox??

Caswallonthefox · 02/02/2024 18:24

Yes he was. I grew up watching him.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 02/02/2024 20:06

Oh yes of course. I was just thinking of his tail, which isn’t really like a squirrels… duh.

need more 🍷 don’t think I fox would taste nice.

anyone tried cat or dog?

FH27 · 02/02/2024 20:15

Also Durian fruit, it tastes and smells like methane gas. I don't understand how anyone can enjoy it.

Msmumm · 02/02/2024 20:17

Seafood pasta at a restaurant popular with footballers wives in Cheshire. It was more crunchy shell than seafood and even the thought of crunching through it now makes me gag.
Have not eaten seafood pasta since and never will.

Cherrysoup · 02/02/2024 20:20

Vegetarian at the time, so I didn’t try it, but was asked to blend a lamb’s brain for a baby I was looking after abroad. So bizarre.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 02/02/2024 20:27

@DamnSpots that was Pripsen!

Isometimeswonder · 02/02/2024 20:29

Truffles including truffle oil.

Do you mean you ate the clam / mussel shells? You take the seafood out of the shells and put the shells on a side plate, you don't eat them.

With rice - maybe it’s what’s in it? Half of my family are from the ME so huge rice eaters and they don’t panic over reheating, whereas my sister will never reheat rice ever. I reheat plain rice or rice with veggies, herbs etc in it. As with reheating anything, as long as it’s nice and hot.

sometime you need precooked and cooked white rice for some recipes.

Reheating rice isn't the issue, it can be dangerous even if piping hot. It's how it was cooled after it was cooked. If you leave it sitting on the side after meal 1, or put it in a big bowl even straight in the fridge, then meal 2 will be risky. If you immediately cool the rice (eg run it under cold water, spread it out thinly on a tray and put straight in the fridge) it will be safer upon reheating.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 03/02/2024 10:36

I’ve never had problems with reheating rice - but that’s not to say it’s not a thing. My MIL says ‘rubbish!’ but her sister is cautious (she is a cautious type). Both from/grown up/live in the ME. My SIL is Pakistani and reheats rice too.

I am tempting fate now aren’t I?

HavfrueDenizKisi · 03/02/2024 11:02

I have no doubt that this has been mentioned on the thread many times already but saucisson andouillette is absolutely disgusting.

DH tried it and I thought he was making a fuss due to what it was so I popped a piece in my mouth. It was the most rank thing I've ever had the misfortune to try. Couldn't get it out of my mouth quickly enough.

quisensoucie · 03/02/2024 11:13

Lavabread!
Looked like dark green poo, and even with the addition of oats and it being cooked in bacon fat, it tasted like poo

Lambs testicles

Accidentally ate some unrendered fat on a pork chop - gagged for days afterwards!

BobbyBiscuits · 03/02/2024 14:36

Thanks everyone for the further messages, you are all pretty adventurous!

@quisensoucie I always wanted to try lavabread. I love seaweed and fishy things so think i might like it. I also like black pudding though, haha.

@HoneyButterPopcorn I reheat rice quite a bit. I know it's meant to be bad but not sure why so much worse than other things (I have a food hygiene certificate but it was years ago), I try not to cook too much at once to minimise it but I never got sick from it (yet!)

I once went to a work conference in Spain where we were served cold tomato soup with a dollop of Parmesan ice cream in the centre. I'll never forget how awful it was.

I think I'd like that. I like gazpacho, and I've had a couple of savoury ice creams that I've really enjoyed, so nothing about that revolts me.

TamzinGrey · 03/02/2024 15:09

Rotten fermented shark meat in Iceland. It's considered a delicacy there. It reeked of ammonia and tasted vile. Never again.

Rubyupbeat · 03/02/2024 15:17

Beetroot was a no brainer, food of Satan,, at school on salad days, my mum used to bring me home for lunch on salad days.
When I was 11, I got invited to a schoolfriends house for tea. Her Mum made us steak and kidney puddings, I had never had such a thing, I bit into a kidney that exploded in my mouth, I wanted to vomit, but, 50 years ago and being polite, I ate the rest and went straight to the loo after and was sick. I am sure thats what made me a veggie, then a vegan. I always taught my sons they never had to eat anything they didn't want to, just be polite about it.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 03/02/2024 15:54

Oh I had a similar thing when I went to a friend house for tea (I was primary school aged) and her mum said ‘it’s mackerel - you do like that don’t you?’ And I said ‘oh yes thank you’ (never having had it, smelled it, seen it and being too shy to say no).

It was absolutely awful, who gives a 9 year old mackerel???

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/02/2024 16:02

I didn’t actually get it down - it was swiftly transferred to a tissue and into my bag.

It was a slimy orange slice of sea cucumber, served at a Chinese wedding banquet - honestly the most disgusting thing I’ve ever put in my mouth. Not just the taste, the texture…🤮

It’s traditionally at Chinese weddings apparently (knowing what a live sea cucumber looks like (a giant fat willy) I’d guess it’s a fertility symbol. Singaporean Chinese SiL admitted that hardly anybody likes it, but ‘…it’s traditional’.
The rest of the banquet - in the Singapore Raffles - was delicious!

Thepowerhouseofthecell · 03/02/2024 16:04

I'm vegetarian so I know I got food poisoning from rice and not anything else I ate it with. Admittedly it was a takeaway, kept in the fridge and reheated the next day. So probably much more risky than reheating rice you've cooked at home but I've still never done it since.

Apparently it's also something to do with the way it cools down and then reheated, can't remember the exact science but I googled it all at the time as I was so so unwell.

KanyeJohnWestTuna · 03/02/2024 16:17

I’ve had food poisoning from a rice-based meal and it’s the nearest I’ve felt to actually dying.
