Again with the food threads...as much as I love hearing what people like, I also love hearing what people hate!

So, what is the one (or a few) foods you tried and thought were vile and would never try again?

The main one that springs to my mind is whelks. wtf even are they meant to be? Its just impenetrable rubber with no taste...lol.

So, share your revulsions or argue the cause for something unlovable?
C'mon you know you want to! : )

Kidneys - once was enough, and actually it was just the one kidney.

Okra - slimy and completely unnecessary.

Lemoncurd · 31/01/2024 15:28

Just tucked into some sweet 'treats' a guest left with us at Christmas. Puff pastry bites coated in sugar from Lidl or Aldi or similar. Had been quite looking forward to them.

Took one bite and had to warn vegetarian dc to check ingredients before taking any, it just tasted of lard! Sure enough, 2nd ingredient was pork lard!

mathanxiety · 31/01/2024 15:29

And matcha - why???

Can you remember what type of fish it was? I did google Russian white fish but all that came up was about sanctions!

Pickled white fish?
You make a hot brine of onions, garlic, mustard, coriander seeds, dill, wine, vinegar, S&P, and pour it over whitefish filets, then bung it all into the oven in a covered baking dish at about 200° for five mins or so. Then you let it cool, and serve it chilled. I can think of better things to do with whitefish. Have had some smoked, which were great.

Wtaf!!! Who gave you that?!!!

A herdsman in a yurt in Tajikistan. It would have been rude to say no.

legalseagull · 31/01/2024 18:41

Snails. Or should I say, singular snail. That thing was spat out the second it touched my tongue. Lump of yuck.

And matcha - why???

Yes to this. Cup of green mud anyone?!

tulippa · 31/01/2024 18:55

Salt covered licorice on an exchange trip to Denmark. I thought it was a fizzy blackcurrant sweet so tucked in enthusiastically as the family watched so had to down it gratefully. I hate licorice and it's improved in no way at all by adding salt to it. 🤢

Durian fruit. Tastes like what your black bin smells like on a hot day.

Same!

peakygold · 31/01/2024 19:20

Anything matcha. It's like eating newly mown grass (and not in a good way).

HoneyButterPopcorn · 31/01/2024 21:15

Does an off kefir drink count? I took a big swig out of a bottle before I realised it was putrid. 🤢

Reheated takeaway rice.

^

Yip. Be wary of reheated rice. It was worse than labour pains

Could someone explain the reheated rice problem? Is it just fried rice or even the rice you make at home? We get Chinese every so often and there is too much fried rice to eat in one day, so we eat it the next day.

I have felt sick and had "D" after eating Chinese but always assumed it was my IBS showing me who's boss and not the food itself.

As for what I hate: I ate a snail once. Never again. The PP who called it garlic-flavored chewing gum was spot on.
Oysters
Tofu
Blue Cheese
Zucchini
Caviar
Sushi containing raw fish/tuna etc. Love the California rolls though.

Have never tried most of what y'all have mentioned (tripe, tongue, sweetbreads, haggis, whale etc) and honestly, have no desire to try. Not an adventurous eater by any stretch. LOL!

HoneyButterPopcorn · 02/02/2024 12:57

With rice - maybe it’s what’s in it? Half of my family are from the ME so huge rice eaters and they don’t panic over reheating, whereas my sister will never reheat rice ever. I reheat plain rice or rice with veggies, herbs etc in it. As with reheating anything, as long as it’s nice and hot.

sometime you need precooked and cooked white rice for some recipes.

LauderSyme · 02/02/2024 13:59

@Nanaof1 It's allowing toxic spores to develop in rice that's the problem, rather than the dish or manner of cooking.

The NHS website says;

Yes, you can get food poisoning from eating reheated rice. It's not the reheating that causes the problem, but the way the rice has been stored before it's reheated. How does reheated rice cause food poisoning?

Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can cause food poisoning. The spores can survive when rice is cooked.

If rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores can grow into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea.

The longer cooked rice is left at room temperature, the more likely it is that the bacteria or toxins could make the rice unsafe to eat.

LauderSyme · 02/02/2024 14:03

So, if you cool cooked rice down relatively quickly, keep it cool and when you want it, reheat it quickly to piping hot, it should be perfectly safe to eat.

DrNo007 · 02/02/2024 14:09

As a vegetarian since I was 18, worst meal ever was a shepherd’s pie made with soy textured vegetable protein fake minced beef. OMG. Could not get beyond a couple of mouthfuls. Had to tell my host I wasn’t hungry. Second worst was a plate of overcooked white spaghetti with absolutely nothing else, which I was served at a conference due to the meat eaters taking my special veggie meal that I had ordered. I don’t blame the meat eaters, it was the idiot conference organisers who failed to ensure the special diet people were fed first before offering veggie choices to all and sundry.

Wibblebits · 02/02/2024 14:15

Whitebait is disgusting.

The problem with re-heating rice is that the culprit is a bacteria which is heat resistant so can't be killed off through re-heating. Important thing is to cool quickly so the bacteria can't grow in the first place. Getting it piping hot won't make a jot of difference if it hasn't been cooled safely.

I'd never re-heat takeaway rice as it's already been through a cook-chill-cook process before you even get it.

BarrelOfOtters · 02/02/2024 15:17

Whitebait is delicious

Quorn gives me stomach ache.

CoffeeCantata · 02/02/2024 16:06

Great thread! Thank you.

I've learned so much - mainly not to try things I didn't fancy anyway but wondered about...

I have to admit it's made me nauseous at times, reading these, but it's been highly instructive. I can't 'unknow' what balut is. You always think you've imagined the worst...

Also - learned that a ladybird is a barniebishiebee in some areas - I'd never heard that before, and I will now try to use it as often as possible!!

Mumof2NDers · 02/02/2024 16:09

Avocado 🤮

Katisha · 02/02/2024 16:17

Sea cucumber

And im amazed kimchi is so popular now

Tiddlywinks63 · 02/02/2024 16:37

Crocodile isn’t any better. Sort of bouncy, unpleasantly fishy, unchewable and utterly disgusting.

MadCatLady27 · 02/02/2024 17:40

A quiche at a school dinner that had big pieces of crunchy almost raw onion in. It made me retch (stupidly I continued to eat it because I needed a lunch!)

I now cannot eat onion at all, it makes me gag 🤢

Thought I'd try sushi to see what all the fuss was about - grim, it just felt wrong eating cold, raw fish
