Picking up teen DD16

Flyhigher · 29/01/2024 19:33

DD 16 says I have to text when I arrive to pick her up in such a rude way. She berated me over it.

Question - does everyone text to say they have arrived to pick up their DC's?

Even it's bang on the agreed time?
Husband says yes.

I do a lot of the time. But this time I said 6pm. Arrived at 6pm didn't text.

Was I reasonable or not?

Send her a bus timetable...

Flyhigher · 29/01/2024 19:36

Do I have to text her?
Was she unreasonable or was I?

No matter who I'm picking up (even if the time is agreed) I always text to say I'm there / setting off. It's just easily done? Saves people standing out in the cold / me waiting around for them.

Flyhigher · 29/01/2024 19:37

That's what I texted her. Husband says YABU

I didn't if picking up after a class/activity which ended at a specific time.
I did (and still do though DCs are 22/19 now) if they were just at a mates or eg at a restaurant/pub etc. They easily loose track of time.
I wouldn't collect if they are rude!

dementedpixie · 29/01/2024 19:37

I usually text. How do they know you've remembered to come if you don't let them know you're there?

Flyhigher · 29/01/2024 19:38

I had texted to say I'll be there at 6.

I only normally text if I’m going to be late. If you agree a time then I would expect both parties to be there at the time.

the joys of teens - whatever you do would be wrong in their eyes 😂
I get from my DD ‘why are you like this’ if I dare ask anything - I normally respond with a very sarcastic/jokey ‘I’m really sorry you feel that way’ - it makes her smile as she knows she’s being unreasonable 😂

Newtoniannechanics · 29/01/2024 19:39

I give it a minute if no movement I text here. No matter who it is.

Flyhigher · 29/01/2024 19:49

So far most text.

I'd tell her to walk. Nobody ever collected me from anywhere when I was 16. I somehow survived. Unless she has a disability? Otherwise she's being an entitled brat. She could get a job and then use her wages to pay for a taxi if she requires ferrying around so much.

user1471556818 · 29/01/2024 19:58

I do text to say I've arrived at the arranged time .Maybe daft but it's easy to get held up

Bululu · 29/01/2024 20:17

They are monsters at that age. Rude and entitled. I felt like I was done.

DocOck · 29/01/2024 20:18

I normally just text and say 'I'm here'.

Bertiesmum3 · 29/01/2024 20:22

Adult children in their 30’s and we text when we arrive at their houses 🤣 also when they come to take me somewhere, they text to say they’re outside, even at the agreed time!

BarbieDangerous · 29/01/2024 20:23

I text to say ‘On my way!’ or ‘I’m here.’ Always find it easier to say something and let them know even if I’m on time

Catsfrontbum · 29/01/2024 20:23

I text- I’m here.

LittleMissCantBeArsed · 29/01/2024 20:28

I always text 'I'm here'. Otherwise I'm sat around waiting!

Flyhigher · 29/01/2024 20:32

Ok. Looks like I'm unreasonable.
I did text her at 5.45 to say I'd be there at 6.

This is the curse of the mobile phone. Assuming we didn't just walk/get the bus, if a parent was collecting us at 6pm (say it was agreed earlier in the morning) then all parties would be there at 6. For one thing, it taught us punctuality!
If my child was being as rude as OP's with her demands, I'd be leaving her to organise her own transport in future.

Flyhigher · 29/01/2024 20:45

Is there a voting button on MN?

How was she to know you didn't get stuck in traffic though. Surely if you're picking anyone up you text them to let them know you've arrived and are parked by the postbox or wherever?

If you'd got delayed would you have preferred she hung around on a street corner wondering where you were?

Flyhigher · 29/01/2024 20:49

I'm a gen x 56 year old Mum with a gen z teen.
But my DH is also a gen x and he texts all the time. I don't know I think if you text at 5.50 why do I need to text again at 6. Unless I'm late.
I'm too old for this parenting mallarky

@titchy I was only 5 minutes away. She was just half a mile up the road. Picking her up from tutor and taking her to dance.

OP posts:
Flyhigher · 29/01/2024 20:51

@titchy she knew there's no traffic. If I was late I'd ring.
