Is anyone else absolutely terrified or just me?
Tensions seem to be ramping up

No, it's not materially different from the last five decades

Who do you think the war would be between

vodkaredbullgirl · 28/01/2024 23:32

NO

Saladcreamdreams · 28/01/2024 23:33

America and Iran with Russia and China wading in?

I think it is quite different and I'm nearly 60. It's silly to understate the situation, the world is not in a good place right now. I'm not terrified though, just sad and worried.

carerneedshelp · 28/01/2024 23:37

To be honest I think all this war bollocks is due entirely to the fact the UK and US are both heading into election season. The tories know they are fucked the only way of winning left is to attempt to scare the public. So WW3 rhetoric it is!

AnneLovesGilbert · 28/01/2024 23:37

What would you do about it anyway?

There’s no point in worrying. That won’t stop you and I get a bit caught up in too much news sometimes, but I turn the radio off and listen to music for a bit, call someone for a chat, hug my children, eat a fried egg sandwich and look out of my window.

The birds on the fence couldn’t give a shit, they’re just going about their day hoping the squirrels don’t eat all the fat balls.

Summerscoming23 · 28/01/2024 23:38

I am worried when i see videos about conscription...feels like all of a sudden its becoming a lot closer to home

ZeppelinTits · 28/01/2024 23:40

I am worried. But there is nothing I can do, so I try to bring my thoughts back to the present. I think: okay worst case there is a war, and I die. What will I wish I'd done with my life while I still could? And then do that. There are so many small moments of joy to be had in the day, so much love and loveliness still. So although it does feel a bit globally...ominous, shall we say, I'm trying to live in the present moment and store up loads of good moments.

PossumintheHouse · 28/01/2024 23:40

Isn’t going to happen.

Posypointshoes · 28/01/2024 23:41

@Summerscoming23 what videos about conscription?

I feel like it all feels a bit closer to home at the moment, especially since with social media snd
24 hour rolling news there’s just information everywhere always.
i wasn’t overly worried but the Iran/america situation is worrying what with tensions being so high but at the same time we’ve got to live our lives and get on with things as there’s nothing we can do

SantaBarbaraMonica · 28/01/2024 23:41

Stop. You’re harming yourself thinking about this. What good does it do!

You could similarly state it is silly to overestimate it.

Russia could barely make a dent in Ukraine territory, the US and China have nothing to gain from a war and would avoid any actual escalation at all costs

It is just empty rhetoric from leaders trying to look strong to the voting public

Throughout history people have claimed things are getting worse, but this is often attributed to people aging and becoming more aware - versus actual rising liklihood of conflict

The fact that the Israel conflict didn't escalate into anything outside of the region is a good example of other countries really not wanting to bring anything closer to home

If anything, the longer time goes on the less likely we are to ever have a large scale war again

Cherrysherbet · 28/01/2024 23:43

Our irresponsible media are hyping it up again.

ilovesooty · 28/01/2024 23:43

No. Even if it were going to happen, what's the point of being worried about something over which you have no control?

I'd ignore this, it's the usual bluster from leaders in the armed forces trying to argue for increased funding

wonderstuff · 28/01/2024 23:44

UK was last successfully invaded in 1066, if there is a war it won’t be here.

What do you mean the Israeli conflict didn't escalate any further? Last time I looked it was still in full flow and graver than ever, how odd to speak about it as though it were in the past?

DiscoBeat · 28/01/2024 23:50

It's so worrying. I can hardly think of anything else at the moment. I have two teenaged boys and really fear for their future.

Further in terms of radius, it is still confined to the region - despite in this instance numerous countries backing one side or the other

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 28/01/2024 23:54

No. Because there is nothing I can do about it one way or another. It’s also the usual scaremongering journalism that seems to be very prevalent probably because it sells papers/subscriptions. It’s election year and no one actually seems to have much to offer in the way of policy - so lots of oooo look over there type distraction is going on. We also seem to be having a war or two every year for decades, it’s all a bit meh now. I’m older and remember being issued the government booklet on what to do in the event of a nuclear attack - So it’s all a bit meh.
For all that, I do get why it’s scary.

HarrietofFire · 28/01/2024 23:58

Stop watching and reading the news. Read a book. Find a new recipe. Have a long bath. Go for a run. Anything. Just try to remember to control the things you can and step away from the things you can't

HeddaGarbled · 28/01/2024 23:58

Not terrified, but certainly concerned: things do seem to be escalating in the Middle East.

Russia are tied up in Ukraine.

I don’t think China will get involved other than exploiting tensions for propaganda purposes or invading Taiwan whilst things are taking off elsewhere.

I don’t think Iran are in any sort of position for a proper war against America. It’s their many supported terrorist groups across the Middle East that are the threat to America and the U.K.

America could bomb the fuck out of Iran if they choose to. Would Russia and China get involved then? I expect not, except for propaganda purposes for the future. America know this, so hopefully their response will be proportionate.

Cherrysherbet · 28/01/2024 23:43

Our irresponsible media are hyping it up again.

This. Also worth remembering that it's an election year in the UK and US.

KyleWalkersLibido · 29/01/2024 00:02

It is election season in the U.K. and the US. We will be subject to all sorts of psychological messages from differing sides, and potentially from foreign governments, wanting to influence how we vote.
Keep away from the news. You won’t learn anything from it that you can do something about.

bellamountain · 29/01/2024 00:02

I think it's putting everything into perspective, the world is a dangerous and cruel place anyway. Natural disasters, terrorism, disease, murder, illness, rape, serious accidents..... the list goes on and on. All that is without war. Danger lurks everywhere. Something horrendous could happen in your life that you could never recover from or, a war could break out, occur for 4 years and you'd come out of it at the end completely unscathed. The media are on a continuous cycle of ramping up hysteria, imagine the media is a film company, they need drama otherwise what do they have?

Try to put down the phone and go outside. If you can get to the countryside, take it all in and enjoy it. The sun was shining today and the woods were a calming experience for me.
