Is anyone else absolutely terrified or just me?
Tensions seem to be ramping up

Read Chicken Licken to the kids.

Jellybeanz456 · 29/01/2024 00:07

War?? Thankfully I stopped watching the news along time ago seems to have done my mental health good

HRTQueen · 29/01/2024 00:07

I would be worried if I lived closer to Ukraine, Gaza, Isreal, Iran, Yemen and Taiwan

but as I am quite a comfortable distance away no i do not worry about mine or my families safety

the impact on those living there and knock on impact yes that is worrying

its convenient that it’s election year

It’s pretty scary. It’s the closest we’ve been to war in my lifetime and I’m 70. I’m normally a news junkie and I’m limiting my consumption now. The world feels like a hostile place.

Not so. The Cuban missile crisis was a bloody close call.

Stop watching and reading the news. Read a book. Find a new recipe. Have a long bath. Go for a run. Anything. Just try to remember to control the things you can and step away from the things you can't

Yes! Who is doing the ramping up, the world leaders or the media? I say the media.

All this talk of national service, conscription and whatnot.

What can you or I do about it? Other than emailing the news organisations to stop putting out alarmist nonsense...well nothing, really.

Might as well enjoy what life you have left whilst NATO try and raise a war. C**ts.

The difference was that we were passive onlookers then and it was a short lived incident. Wars are breaking out all over the world now and our government seems to have an appetite for involvement, despite having the smallest military capability for decades.

PaulCostinRIP · 29/01/2024 00:19

No in the slightest.

PollyPeep · 29/01/2024 00:20

The only place I ever see anything about this is Mumsnet lol. Maybe because I don't read the news, don't have social media and my Reddit feed is mainly full of light hearted nonsense. I'd advise you do the same, as worrying about something like that won't change the outcome. I think it's highly unlikely they'll introduce conscription so if anything it'll be like the Iraq war all over again - barely affecting most of us in the UK unless you join the armed forces.

MargaretSnatcher · 29/01/2024 00:20

No, it's just you.

RubyWinehouse · 29/01/2024 00:29

You need to start watching the independent news channels on YouTube, rumble etc. The mainstream news will not report the truth, this has been brewing for a while now, and it is indeed very frightening, I'm scared too.

Garlicdoughball · 29/01/2024 00:34

Berlin Wall fell when I was 17. Spent my childhood before that shitting it about nuclear war, Raymond Briggs “When the wind blows” etc. In the years after that there was a horrible war in Europe. Am thankful we didn’t have constant news then. Wars/AI to take all jobs/environmental devastation - then confusion about by kids’ stress levels are turned up to 11. Shit is happening all the time, who knows if it’s worse this time but we really aren’t designed to be switched on to it all the time.

Yes, you’re bloody right about that! It seems to have an irresistible impulse to involve itself with every conflict going. The idea that the UK is a world power would be funny if the implications weren’t so frightening.

wellhello24 · 29/01/2024 00:38

It’s time to stop watching the news, then you stop worrying. It’s that simple.

Garlicdoughball · 29/01/2024 00:40

I thought the army had been reduced in size because the demands of 21st century warfare were different. That was the chat before, I don’t remember it being justified on the basis of the world being a calmer place.

Simple, but some people want to bask in their anxiety.

RantyAnty · 29/01/2024 00:42

No. Turn the news off.

placemats · 29/01/2024 00:51

Where would you go to for refuge in a different country if war did happen and would you have passports and birth certificates for proof of identity?

There's war in Ukraine and Gaza, the latter being Mediterranean and the former in mainland Europe.

placemats · 29/01/2024 00:53

Birth certificates are not considered proof of identity by the way.

Nope
Got better things to worry about

Roundtable83 · 29/01/2024 03:24

Not worried in the slightest. What will be will be so just enjoy and make the best out of each day.

temperedolive · 29/01/2024 03:41

I've lived in Taiwan for nearly ten years, so living with the possibility of war is something I know about.

The very best thing you can do is what people here have always done. Live your life. You can't control global issues and your fear will not prevent whatever is going to happen from happening. Vote wisely for politicians who you believe can navigate the geopolitical situation with steady hands and cool minds and then get on with things.

Happyhappyday · 29/01/2024 04:15

Obviously the wars are front page news over here in the US, but there is not visible scaremongering about the conflict spreading in the Main stream news, ie, the NYTimes. Going to sound like a huge snob here, but family and friends are well educated, work in global jobs etc and no one is fretting about an expansion of the war… I dunno what kind of coverage you’re getting in the UK!

Wupity · 29/01/2024 04:44

I have been wondering what situation would require conscription? Surely we would need to be at risk of invasion for this? Trying to understand if this is a possibility?

filthypride · 29/01/2024 04:50

I am quite exhausted of living so not bothered no.......
