Is anyone else absolutely terrified or just me?
Tensions seem to be ramping up

OP posts:
BlackWitchyCat · 29/01/2024 16:02

I'm worried. DH can't wait 🤦‍♀️

Lilifer · 29/01/2024 16:02

Fear fear fear
Every day another panic laden headline
Seems like since feb 2020 we have just been kept in a suspended animation crisis state, constantly kept on edge by a daily diet of doom, and just as we start to relax boom! and along comes the next crisis / COVID, Ukraine, with the climate crisis of course the constant mood music in the background, Israel / Gaza and now this ....

Ever wonder what purpose it serves to chronically terrorise people in this way ? 🤔

whatdidshedotogetahillnamedafterher · 29/01/2024 16:03

OP you couldnt get the kids off tik tok long enough to worry about conscription! If we had to rely on some of them I see well worrying would do you no good what so ever as we would have lost before we started!! Turn off the mainstream media, its there to ramp up peoples emotions with not much fact to back it up. Do you remember how much they tried and succeeded to a point to terrify us during the pandemic? Dont let them do it again over wars that will probably never happen. I genuinely think its men trying to see who has the biggest balls in the shouty way they do.Take no notice and leave them too it . Live your life it really is too short to worry yourself into an early grave.

Since reading this (and the three other threads on here in the last week), I've gone on a few news websites but I can't see anything about an impending war? In fact the only place I have seen it is Mumsnet. Is this on the 24 hour news channels? Because BBC, metro, guardian etc it's all same old same old. Where are people hearing all this nonsense about conscription?

I've only seen it on here. Thread after thread after thread, probably all started by the same people. They need to all be shoved into one topic so we can hide them.
The conscription thing started with some ex general saying it might be needed at some point. (Note the ex). Current heads of the Army and the government have stated it's all nonsense, and if we do need more serving soldiers it would be voluntary. But people have read the scare mongering headlines and ran with it, especially on Mumsnet.

Potatodreams · 29/01/2024 16:10

I think it’s absolutely right to be concerned but like others I’m just trying to enjoy things while I can.

The future is quite scary but at the same time we’ve had terrible periods and great periods within the last 100 years and no reason that those ups and downs won’t continue. It’ll be crap for a bit but it will get better.

ruffler45 · 29/01/2024 16:12

Can't imagine China would get involved in any war where there would be a disruption in income from western money/trade.

Floralnomad · 29/01/2024 16:14

No . I do think a war with the UK involved is looking more likely but I see absolutely no point in worrying about things I can do nothing about .

Bululu · 29/01/2024 16:26

Do not worry! Labour is saying they have the next elections in the bag. Identity yourself accordingly to avoid being conscripted.

Naive doesn't even come close. Xi has stated that invasion of Taiwan is inevitable.

EasternEcho · 29/01/2024 17:01

Not at the moment, but I think I'll worry about it if Trump gets back in power. Not because I think he'll start one, but because he's made it abundantly clear that he's not a fan of NATO, and he has no intention of coming to the aid of Europe in any war. It will be a boon to countries like Russia. This is probably also why countries like Sweden are stepping up their conscription.

Notaflippinclue · 29/01/2024 17:01

What button? The nuclear button that Iran had been striving for during the last 60 years

Begsthequestion · 29/01/2024 17:08

Lou7171 · 29/01/2024 15:44

I've only seen it on here as well!

It's in the Standard, Sky News, the Independent, the Mail, Express, Mirror, Guardian, Sun...

One thing that alarms me most is probably that the US is now putting nukes in Suffolk. They removed them in 2008 as the cold war threat had then diminished. And now they're back.

Also the killing of US soldiers by Iran-backed rebels last night in Jordan.

Plus Russian-allied territory grabs that seem to be a means to overstretch the US military, such as China gearing up to invade Taiwan, and Venezuela trying to claim two-thirds of Guyana.

And the fact that if Putin loses in Ukraine he may well face trial as a war criminal so he has too much to lose to just quit.

And Trump either winning the presidency and refusing to fight Putin, or going to prison and sparking a civil war in the US (which is being seriously discussed in the US right now, especially since the Texas national guard is already defying the federal border police over the border issue, and 1000s of armed MAGA supporters set off today in a convoy to "protect the border" there).

Fun times.

IClaudine · 29/01/2024 17:09

Why so many of these threads and so often made by new or newly name changed posters? It is most odd.

darkmodeera · 29/01/2024 17:11

No, I simply do not have the headspace to worry about a possible war. It's too big a thought.

Andarna · 29/01/2024 17:29

Read the book by Hans Rosling. The world is in a much better place than the media would like you to believe.

ClaudiasWardrobeplease · 29/01/2024 19:44

I can’t see Russia attacking NATO though.

Until Trump wins in November and takes US out of NATO altogether.

AnneLovesGilbert · 28/01/2024 23:37

What would you do about it anyway?

There’s no point in worrying. That won’t stop you and I get a bit caught up in too much news sometimes, but I turn the radio off and listen to music for a bit, call someone for a chat, hug my children, eat a fried egg sandwich and look out of my window.

The birds on the fence couldn’t give a shit, they’re just going about their day hoping the squirrels don’t eat all the fat balls.

I absolutely love this, very true.

Daftasabroom · 29/01/2024 16:32

Naive doesn't even come close. Xi has stated that invasion of Taiwan is inevitable.

Well that is a bit depressing, I had missed that

Op it’s not nice but what can we do? Try to protect your mh as well as you can

We are lucky so far and that’s what I think mostly atm

Why do posters like this use ... and stupid emojis instead of actually saying what they mean?

I don't wonder.

Enjoy your conspiracy theories.

The press again scaremongering people to death, same happened with the gulf war, there were non stop reports about world war three, they must get all be wankers but they aren't totally stupid. Even if anything were to happen there's nothing you can do to stop it, you only have one life, don't spend it worrying.

Thegoodbadandugly · 30/01/2024 17:11

ClaudiasWardrobeplease · 29/01/2024 19:44

Why didn't he do that last time he was in power? I don't like that man either.

Dearee · 30/01/2024 17:32

Honestly OP you really don't need to worry. It's in none of the superpowers' interests for there to be a wider war - and they've all said as much. The recent skirmishes in Jordan etc have been going on for ages. But none of the key players wants things to escalate. Obviously what's going on in Gaza is terrible but it'll stay relatively contained.

US - it's election year and nobody wants a war. Biden and Trump are both totally against escalating things with Iran. It's one thing they agree on.

China - economy really not great so also does not want a war. Has been very clear multiple times that it wants things in the Middle East to calm down. What they call 'reunification' with Taiwan is a very long-term aim - and has been official policy forever so Xi simply repeating the policy recently does not imply he's going to be invading any time soon. We're talking many years, if at all. Time enough for lots of things to change.

Russia - already in a very costly war that is damaging its economy badly and is deeply unpopular. Hundreds of thousands dead or wounded. No way Putin wants war on another front.

Iran - has stated publicly and via back channels that it doesn't want a wider war in the Middle East. Low level sabre rattling against US/Israel will continue but won't get out of hand.

Saudis - absolutely 100% don't want war. They're on the road towards 'normalising' relations with Israel as they understand everyone getting along is better for everyone's economies.

So basically, don't worry. It's all going to be fine.

Stewiegriffenstimemachine · 30/01/2024 17:35

What am I going to do about it? What would me worrying achieve?

There is very little I worry about. I try to keep my main concerns to what colour shall I paint my hallway. Anything outside that is beyond my control and ultimately, doesn’t really matter.
