To be so worried about an imminent war

Is anyone else absolutely terrified or just me?
Tensions seem to be ramping up

OP posts:
Newchapterbeckons · 29/01/2024 05:50

No. Russia are depleted after its disasterous invasion of Ukraine. Iran does not have the capacity to take on the US.
China will wish to retain its neutrality as its first priority is always the economy.

Israel need to pull back. Things need to settle down. No one has the appetite for a fully blown war.

CrunchyCarrot · 29/01/2024 06:56

No. What will your worrying achieve? Absolutely nothing except affecting your mental health adversely. Don't keep doom-scrolling about it, either, it really won't help. Concentrate on good news and things you enjoy.

carerneedshelp · 28/01/2024 23:37

To be honest I think all this war bollocks is due entirely to the fact the UK and US are both heading into election season. The tories know they are fucked the only way of winning left is to attempt to scare the public. So WW3 rhetoric it is!

This in spades.
They are so pathetically transparent
The sad thing is some people will fall for it. Cameron has already said a couple of times. Along the lines of "in troubled times we need stability in government". Which is laughable given how they have fucked us over.

witmum · 29/01/2024 07:03

Watch less news it will make you happier and easier to put into perspective.

I have stopped listening to news podcasts as they were impacting my mood.

WinchSparkle80 · 29/01/2024 07:08

Please don’t worry… it is actually a waste of time because you can’t control whether there is a war or not.

Majority of this is propaganda from all sides. US and UK elections this year. Iran and Russia chest feather parading. Conscription talks are to get the country prepped for tax increases for defence spending…

Enjoy the week, get some fresh air, and note down how you feel right now and do it again in a week… hopefully you will feel better.

Alcyoneus · 29/01/2024 07:11

Don’t know about war but elections are. 60% of the global population will be voting to elect a government this year. Nothing gets electioneering going like the threat of war. Keep the sheep docile and scared.

Noicant · 29/01/2024 07:55

Russia has raised conscription age to 30, I think they are running out of people. I think there is more danger of proxy actors de-stabilising regions (looking at you Houthis) of the world than an actual war in the UK. We probably do need to increase defence spending though and Ukraine needs to receive continuing support (I believe the lead times on weapons manufacturing is very slow and a lot of european countries are running low on stock). I can’t see Russia attacking NATO though.

spicedlemonpie · 29/01/2024 14:22

I think we will have some conflict nothing we cant handle.
If its full out war will i worry NO not one bit i have nothing to lose so dont care.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 29/01/2024 14:40

No not any more. I was when the was between Russia and Ukraine first started and would religiously watch the news. I hated being out of the house in case something happened. I had my Cats carry case out ready to just grab him and shove him inside it in case we needed to get out quickly. I'd constantly plan how far from home I was and how long it would take to get back home. I worried constantly about my OH and how given the distance between us we wouldn't be together if something happened and a lot of the time I couldn't sleep properly. Then a few days of finishing late at work meant I missed the 10pm news and eventually I realised that if anything did/does happen it would be out of my control anyway and all the panicking about it was ruining my life.

BrainMog · 29/01/2024 14:44

I am also worried and feeling hopelessly depressed about the future. I feel like there isn't one. Who wants to live in a world where we go through what our grandparents did? They went through that in the hope that we wouldn't. It feels like a betrayal of that generation, and the one before, too.

Muddywalks34 · 29/01/2024 14:46

I stopped watching the news, reading papers years ago, everything is hyped up/blown out of proportion and I am powerless to do anything. The only news I catch up on is in my local village newsletter so whilst I am fully upto date with who won what at the latest WI charity do this is the first I have heard of an impending war. I will now return to burying my head in the sand as there is no use in fretting over things that are out of my control.

Onthebusallday · 29/01/2024 14:48

Stop watching and reading the news, you will be amazed how much better you will feel.

Your mind is an amazing thing, it can catastrophise and it can also ignore things.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, I thought I would be riddled with anxiety for the rest of my life about the world ending.

I then blocked certain words from my social media accounts, spent less tome in general online...and didn't come on websites like this where there some awful threads that made things seem futile for the world.

In short, stop watching the news and spend less time on here !

Zanatdy · 29/01/2024 14:49

I’ve barely thought about until I’ve seen about 5 posts on here in the last week saying this. Live your life day by day, not worrying about what might or might not happen. If it did kick off I’d rather be thinking at least I enjoyed my time and not sitting worrying about things we can no control over. If this kind of thing worries you then you need to restrict your access to the news / certain social media etc.

Notaflippinclue · 29/01/2024 14:50

We are ok unless some jihadi gets his finger on the button

InAnotherLifetimeMaybe · 29/01/2024 14:51

We've been in this situation many many other times

Get on with life.... stop watching the news!

ZeppelinTits · 28/01/2024 23:40

I am worried. But there is nothing I can do, so I try to bring my thoughts back to the present. I think: okay worst case there is a war, and I die. What will I wish I'd done with my life while I still could? And then do that. There are so many small moments of joy to be had in the day, so much love and loveliness still. So although it does feel a bit globally...ominous, shall we say, I'm trying to live in the present moment and store up loads of good moments.

Worst case for me is there is a war and my kids die.

PollyPeep · 29/01/2024 15:32

Since reading this (and the three other threads on here in the last week), I've gone on a few news websites but I can't see anything about an impending war? In fact the only place I have seen it is Mumsnet. Is this on the 24 hour news channels? Because BBC, metro, guardian etc it's all same old same old. Where are people hearing all this nonsense about conscription?

Munchyseeds2 · 29/01/2024 15:41

I try not to worry to be honest.
I like to think it won't happen and try and enjoy every day
There is nothing else we can do .

peakygold · 29/01/2024 15:43

During fairly recent UK Army 'wargames' it was concluded we have only 8 days worth of ammunition in the country. If we were invaded or attacked in any way, NATO would join forces and see off the aggressor ; we are not alone. Also, wars these days are fought with drones, intelligence, cyber attacks etc. No-one in this country will be 'conscripted'.

What button?

Daftasabroom · 29/01/2024 15:53

wonderstuff · 28/01/2024 23:44

UK was last successfully invaded in 1066, if there is a war it won’t be here.

There were more than 450,000 British deaths in WW2 and over 880,000 in WW1. The war was very much "here" to those who suffered.

SomeCatFromJapan · 29/01/2024 15:55

You have absolutely no control over this so there is no point wasting energy on worrying about it.

BeaRF75 · 29/01/2024 15:57

Not worried at all, for the simple reason that there is absolutely no point in worrying about things outside of our control. You need to concentrate on your own life, OP.
