Sister won’t commit to booking holiday because of “threat of war”

Posypointshoes · 28/01/2024 23:03

I’m an anxious person. I worry a LOT especially about the way things are in the world at the moment. I can see how it can feel like things are pressing in on all sides.

however we have a special family birthday coming up and we are all supposed to be booking a special holiday abroad for it. It’s been in the works for a while we’ve sorted all the arrangements and now when it’s time to actually book my sister is saying she won’t commit because we just don’t know what’s going to happen with the world.
she’s panicking about war breaking out if we were on holiday and then what would we do?

as I said I am an anxious person. I’ve had some dark and scary thoughts about possibilities and what we could be facing but this just seems mad to me? Our parents are upset as it’s their occasion and now she’s the only one not going.

its also making me alarmed that she’s struggling with her mental health maybe more so than she’s letting on, if that seems like a logical reason not to book a holiday? She’s also stopped making plans further than a few weeks ahead as well. I don’t really know what to do about it, if it’s my place to try and how to approach it.

What exactly does 'planning for a war' comprise of in say Basingstoke? I'm curious, humour me....

Stockpiling loo roll perhaps?

I think you should tell her the holiday is being booked a week from today (or whatever date you and your parents decide on). She needs to tell you yes or no the day before and then the holiday is going to be booked with or without her. If she doesn't want to go because she is worried about war then that's up to her. It would be a shame for everyone else to meet up because of her.

But I'd also tell her that the scenario of "war breaking out" when you are in Greece is extremely unlikely. Anyway, you'd know in the couple of weeks before the holiday how stable the world is at that point because things can change a lot in a couple of months. She can decide again at that point whether to go or not (but make clear if she does pull out she still has to pay her share).

If war does break out why does she think she would be any safer in UK than in Greece? Being an awful Boomer and having lived in a military environment where we checked under the car every morning then crossed our fingers when we switched on, I take the view Illegitimi non carborundum.

Well I personally think she's batshit but I was trying to suggest what the OP could say to her. It sounded like she was worried about getting back from Greece if war broke out and being stranded there.
My own view is that I just get on with life and plan things and that anything can happen at any time so there's no point in worrying about things.

Snowdogsmitten · 29/01/2024 11:46

You all sound very anxious. But she’s lost the plot a bit. Go without her.

Mental illness

couiza · 29/01/2024 11:50

It's clear as glass that she just doesn't want to go at all, and probably never did. Have you all gone away in a family group before?

If you haven't booked anything non refundable yet, and IF your parents agree, I'd change it all to a luxury weekend somewhere at home instead.

Otherwise there is no other way around it but to go without her. Ask your parents..... I'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that it is one of their special birthdays. Let them decide.

@Rosscameasdoody well, almost all EU head of defence have been talking about the threat of war, so it's not something specific to the UK only. I do feel there is a lot of articles out there - I read widely - about preparedness.
I'm not an anxious person but there is some basis for your sister's concerns, tbh. There are a lot of hot points and conflicts going on simultaneously at the moment, but I'll plan to book a holiday but may avoid the ME.

Ursulla · 29/01/2024 12:14

Just don't go to Gaza. You'll be reet.

whynotwhatknot · 29/01/2024 12:17

I think that’s fair.

To be honest, as awful as this sounds, I truly believe that if a full world war breaks, that's it for us anyway - as the weapons we have access to could end the world. So just enjoy things while you can!

HopeThatHelps · 29/01/2024 13:05

We are off to Crete in July. Can’t wait. We are genuinely probably safer there than in our home city of London.

Snowbear32 · 29/01/2024 14:04

Exactly. All of these countries have nukes. If war does break out like you said then the whole world will likely be nuked to oblivion in about 30 seconds. I'd rather be on holiday on a beach in Greece when that happens.

Is the holiday in Yemen?

I certainly would NOT go to Cyprus or the Middle East!

bringsomewood · 29/01/2024 19:35

I’d rather go to Greece than London right now tbh. Go without her.

bringsomewood · 29/01/2024 19:38

Did she just watch Leave the world behind, by any chance?

Threat of war wouldn’t put me off but I’d look carefully at which areas in Greece have been subject to forest fires for the past few years and avoid those.

True. No way in hell would I book going there during summer. I’m in Scandinavia and last summer we had so many climate tourists, avoiding the heat.

What’s the issue with Cyprus? I can see the concern with some if the Middle East but not all of it.

So would I. Preferably with a nice cold glass of sangria in my hand.

Cyprus is very very close to trouble, and mostly, has a large UK military base which is used to target Houtis- and allied to the US. Prime target. Would not go to EgyptSinai either.

CaptainCachitoo · 29/01/2024 21:03

the world is always in one conflict or another etc, next it will be the galaxies and Et etc

BarelyLiterate · 29/01/2024 21:04

Gaza is much of a holiday destination even when there isn’t a war on, though. And Kyiv is OK for a short city break, but not really a family holiday.

France, Spain, Greece, Italy, USA, Portugal should all be fine, though.
