To think it shouldn't have taken 18 minutes to get through McDonald's Drive Thru?

There were 5 cars ahead of me, and it was 3pm

I rarely go to McDonalds these days because they have completely forgotten the ‘fast’ bit of ‘fast food’. I used to get breakfast from the drive through every time I had an early start to a journey, but I can simply no longer justify the 20 minutes it invariably takes.

Their operation has become too complicated, their menu too long, with too many different options and speed of service has gone out of the window. I’m sure they don’t care about losing my custom, because plenty of people appear to be prepared to queue for slow food. Maybe they are too young to remember how fast it used to be?

FrozenGhost · 28/01/2024 21:32

I don't think things have changed. I used to work for McD in early 00's and at my store and other local ones, long waits were common and often so many cars lined up they blocked the road. It wasn't any specific event or problem, it's just so many people ordering and not enough staff or kitchen space. It was just so so busy. By comparison my current job in the emergency department of a major hospital is less busy and less stressful.

wubwubwub · 28/01/2024 21:20

I'd ignore @LuluBlakey1 holier than thou attitude. No doubt she writing the response form an apple product, being charged by a non green energy source, whilst sitting on a sofa made in the far east, wearing clothes from any mainstream shop, eating and drinking something from a multi national company. Or any combination of the above.

Unless she's eating only locally sourced, organic, high welfare food, drinking water and built her own windmill to generate her own electricity etc there's no way she's not supporting a company that exploits workers and it suppliers or the environment in some way.

🙄

Where I know something is happening, I avoid it, that's all. Never claimed to know everything about everything and be perfect.

MacDonald's is awful- food quality, animal welfare, packaging, staff treatment. That's what I think and I prefer to avoid it.

I'm not interested in trading insults or referring to other posters in the third person. Playing 'mean girls' isn't for me.

wubwubwub · 28/01/2024 21:44

The food quality isn't awful actually.

But hey you carry on typing on your iPad, safe in the knowledge they definitely treat their workers well, and there's never been any kind of controversy about the people who are making their products...

And I'm certain the big supermarket you use is definitely always giving fair prices to suppliers.

If you're going to try and make me feel bad for using McDonald's and/or proclaim you're somehow better at making choices then you'd better expect someone to scrutinise the choices you're making....

And when they do you can't deal with it, and try and deflect.

All supermarkets are awful- any big business exploits customers.

I'm not arguing with you.

In that time you could have made something healthy at home at a fraction of the price.

Of course its awful, its got little nutritional value, highly processed, too much fat, salt and sugar.
For the amount of time and cost you spent trying to buy this shit, you could have gone home and made a healthier meal/snack ... how long would it take to make a chicken pasta, with onion, passata and some veg? Even if you had to go and buy the stuff you'd at least still be eating more healthily.

There is a reason obesity is increasing along with bowel cancer rates & fast food like Macd's is a leading cause.

Duckingella · 29/01/2024 07:32

Tontostitis · 28/01/2024 15:31

Given their record on healthy foods and labour rights I've got zero sympathy for you

My DD who is autistic works there;they are excellent with her and she loves working there;they also give ND people the same opportunities as everyone else eg the chance to join the management team etc

AcridAndStanLee · 29/01/2024 07:33

@jasflowers your definition of awful is skewed. The food is heavenly. The nutritional value is also not awful, it's just not great. It is perfectly fine to eat in moderation. We don't all want chicken pasta which isn't all that full of nutrients either. Pasta is also not great. We also don't all care about the occasional splurge of salt, fat and sugar. Perhaps that's why we don't go on health threads preaching, because we are happier and don't feel the need to look superior.

And on days where OP wants to do that, she does. Where she doesn't, she goes to McDonald's. She doesn't live at McDonald's. She has gone once that we know of.

AcridAndStanLee · 29/01/2024 07:40

@QuestionableMouse I do not blame them! That's why it gets put off I guess 😂 always feel for them when it's raining and they have to put a big coat on 😭

justmewithmylifetoday · 29/01/2024 07:41

Why are people (some people) so judgy about McDonald's? It's there to serve a purpose.

InAMess2023 · 29/01/2024 07:45

@justmewithmylifetoday couldn't agree more! The OP doesn't imply they go there all the time, obviously that is bad for you but I'm a firm believer in everything in moderation otherwise where's the enjoyment in life 🤷‍♀️

applesandpears87 · 29/01/2024 07:56

Unfortunately this isn’t an issue isolated to McDonalds. This is society.

Totally agree with you, they need to go back to a much simpler menu, as it was pre-90s (and bring back rootbeer).

Also, the model of placing your order on a screen just doesn't work. You have 30 people milling about the counter waiting for their order. Most of which is half-done sitting on the side going cold. What was wrong with going up to a member of staff, placing your order and them doing it there and then?

As an aside, why are the toilets in McDonald's so small? In fact with a such a high footfall why are their restaurants so small generally? It's like feeding time at the fucking zoo at certain times of the week.

Katesdeadbehindtheeyes · 29/01/2024 08:09

@LuluBlakey1 Hang on sec darling I think having 3 kids is far worse than someone having a maccies. If you felt that strongly about this sort of thing you would not have had any kids at all or stopped at one. You know the damage having that many children will do.

They're an excellent Employer. Reasonable adjustments forthcoming as they should be, support for ND.
On what evidence do you base your claim in the UK?

The food is crap but they are good employers. My DS worked there, hated it, but was treated well for an unskilled 17 y/o.
No sympathy for drive thru complaints - just get out the car (you're not American!!)

LlynTegid · 29/01/2024 08:54

You could do this thing called parking the car and getting out for your order. Most of the country had dry and in some cases mild weather for January.

There will sometimes be people who have lost the ability to be quick in placing an order and being decisive, and so pot luck if that happens to be a person in front of you.

Yes. Indeed the chicken salad, pineapple stick and organic milk the child had was of no nutritional value.... You're absolutely right....

What was I thinking... ???
