Aibu to think "panty liners" should be re-named?

I'd be happy with "pant liners", but I'm open to other suggestions.

To me, the word "panties" is either a sexualised or infantilised version of the word "pants". I cringe when I see it on supermarket products.

There's a drag artist in Ireland who goes by the stage name of Panty Bliss 🤢
'Panty' appeared in a series of Tesco promotions before Christmas as 'Panty Claus' 🤢😡
Not okay, Tesco!!!

Panti was a big part of the marriage equality referendum here. You don't need to like them but they're not just a pair of empty stilettos as it were.

Yeah, he's also a creepy misogynist.

fatphalange · 29/01/2024 10:09

I have no opinion on the name, really. But this thread has taught me that they are used not for menstrual reasons, is that right?! I'm 37 😂 I always thought they were for the beginning/end/expectation of a period. Or a light flow.

They can be. But also for day to day discharge, which some women get more than others.

@Chickenkeev I think Mr O'Neill should change his stage name from Panti if he's any respect for women. No problem with the work he did re the marriage referendum obviously. (I was very happy to vote yes.) Just the name. It was once thought amusing to use 'Pussy Galore' in Bond films. It's no longer acceptable and I don't see why women in Ireland should have to put up with this still. I ignore usually, but the Tesco ads brought it to the forefront. I don't find 'Panti Claus 'or 'Panti Bliss' in the least bit funny. I think it's insulting and demeaning.

I appreciate that, but isn't it a matter of taste (or what you might consider lack thereof)? I know i'm sticking my head in the proverbial lion's mouth here, but i don't get feeling insulted or demeaned by a guy in drag. I'm insulted and demeaned by domestic violence, lack of female representation in the dáil, poor treatment of women in hospitals, general acceptance of sexual 'banter' in the workplace. Panti would be very far down my list of grievances if he bothered me at all

MrsGusset · 29/01/2024 10:36

TinDogTavern · 28/01/2024 16:43

I get that there will be various things, spotting, discharge etc, but I don't understand why you'd need what is essentially a second gusset? Wouldn't a gusset dry just as quickly as a pad?

I will stop saying GUSSET in a minute.

This thread's got me wondering whether I should change my MN username for the first time ever ...

It's the name I'm complaining about in this instance rather than the act ( which I've not seen).
I know not every woman has a problem with it but many do.
There is such horror going on in the world but it's possible to be concerned about more than one thing at a time. I think the use of names like Panti Claus by retailers such as Tesco shows an indifference to women. It's disrespectful imo and it does bother me. Lots of things do, don't worry.

Yes, people should be concerned about multiple things including deliberate intent to offend. But puns and jokes (within reason) should not be on a concerned list in my view.

fantasmasgoria1 · 29/01/2024 10:57

I don't like the words panty or panties. Definitely rename the liners. Mind you I don't like the word knickers either so I just call them pants. Under liners?

I don't get why Panti Claus is disrespectful to women though. It's along the lines of the drag act, which you don't like and i don't care about. I just can't get worked up about it.

Would it bother you at all if the next Bond film resurrected the character of Pussy Galore?
Because I think they wouldn't get away with that, not anymore. I think it would be seen as misogynistic these days rather than amusing.
Panti Bliss or Claus isn't acceptable either imho. I find it offensive personally. I realise people have different views but I don't think I'm too much of an outlier on this one either.

I regard myself as a feminist. No, the term Pussy Galore would not bother me at all, any more than Wonderwoman. I am more concerned with names like slut, easy, slag and virgin, which is used as terms to separate “naice girls” from others in real life.

But l digress as this is not what this thread is about.

Lanternandbooks · 29/01/2024 11:20

@Chickenkeev

You worry about sexual 'banter' in the workplace but have no issue with the choice of Panti Bliss as a name? That confuses me.
@StarlightLady that's okay, we clearly disagree on this.
Sorry about the derail!😳

Mayjune11 · 29/01/2024 11:20

I agree! I looked after my friends toddler once who referred to her knickers as her panties (I had to change her after an accident) just why? It’s so grim 🤢

I just don't find pants/ panties as demeaning tbh. I call them knickers. It just doesn't bother me, as i said upthread, if one wants to get angry about things, Panti is so far down the list of things it's not funny. Women should be storming the Dáil about Savita, Vicky Phelan, the Tuam babies and the many others that have been failed by the system. Panti is by the by really, but I think positive in general. I don't personally feel demeaned, obviously you do. It's personal opinion really, neither is wrong.

Lanternandbooks · 29/01/2024 11:56

But why is Panti Bliss so offensive then?

Lanternandbooks · 29/01/2024 12:19

Because imo it's sexist and misogynistic. It reflects a certain attitude towards women.

Also fetishistic innuendo in there for good measure.

Exactly! I would have thought it on the same level as Sponge Bob Square Pants and Captain Underpants.

musroomsontoast · 29/01/2024 12:38

As I said in the OP, for me the word panties is either sexualised (in the fetishist context that pp's have mentioned) or it is infantilised, i.e. a silly name that some very little girls are taught to use for pants. The potential connection between the two contexts is a further and much darker ick factor. I appreciate that if people have been brought up using the word, it may be no more ick than 'knickers', 'briefs' or 'pants', but 50% of the people who have voted so far seem to agree, so I'm not alone.

😂😂
Maybe you don't know the character @StarlightLady, I assure you it's not at all the same as Spongebob Square Pants etc.
There's a reason the other stage name he uses is Pandora.
