Aibu to think "panty liners" should be re-named?

I'd be happy with "pant liners", but I'm open to other suggestions.

To me, the word "panties" is either a sexualised or infantilised version of the word "pants". I cringe when I see it on supermarket products.

Genital Wadding? Any good Hmm

MissCherryCakeyBun · 29/01/2024 08:19

This thread has cheered me up no end on a cold dank January Monday morning.

I notice nobody has mentioned knickers being called "briefs" which is still common usage. Maybe "Brief Buffers" or maybe Undercracker Snippits

Isn't that a sock down ones underwear for aesthetic purposes?

Sorry, not sorry.

😂

SkySecret · 29/01/2024 08:24

Knicker sticker is hilarious 😂😂

I also hate the word “panty” or “panties”

they’re knickers ffs. But as for the product, it’s not top of my list of annoyances. I find it worse when people actually use the word “panties” to describe knickers in a sentence.

In that regard, “liner” isn’t ideal either as it could be associated with a bin liner 🤣

SkySecret · 29/01/2024 08:28

Pants are trousers in the US and Australia. In the UK, pants are knickers.

Nope, I’m UK and for me pants = trousers/long overwear
knickers = ladies underwear

Pants as knickers seems a newer terminology to me. Could be the usual north south divide? But I certainly never used it.

Walkingwashingmachine · 29/01/2024 08:30

Knickers/pants/underpants/undercrackers

Trousers. That's it. No other acceptable term. Apart from maybe pantaloons.

We invented the English language so I think need the final say on the definitive word for knicker liners. And it's not panty liners.

That's certainly the case on the Tescos online shopping app. 🙂

Another vote for Knicker Stickers here! Grin

StarlightLady · 29/01/2024 08:39

Re the trousers/pants thing. I remember planning a night out way back and a friend from Lancashire asked me “are you going to wear pants”? My response was that it was the middle of winter 😂.

Vagina liner?
Excreta deleter?

SoIRejoined · 29/01/2024 08:47

Oh I know, crotch blotter.

I hate the word 'panties' but for some reason I don't think of that when I hear pantyliners, I think it's the 's' that sexualises the word for me but I can't explain that at all!

New2024 · 29/01/2024 09:11

I think it probably arose as a term from the US terminology because panties/pantys are distinct from pants in the US as the latter are trousers. However, I’m not sure knickers is as widely used as it once was. Still the default on the M and S website though.

M&S and l think the now defunct Miss Selfridge both “graduated” from saying panties to saying knickers!

I'm in Ireland. Pants are trousers here too. DS's uniform list this year included 2 pairs of grey pants for example.
It is a bit of an old fashioned term (like slacks) but still used and definitely not underwear.

Even if the term pants has a dual meaning, it is still appropriate because the liners are a barrier between knickers and trousers, aka pants and pants. 🙂

As an aside, this conversation reminds me of an evening class advertised at my local adult education college when I lived in Sydney. It was a sewing class for learning how to adjust trousers to fit perfectly, and it was called "Pants, Pants, Pants!" 😁

Knicker sticker - I like that!!

SweetFemaleAttitude · 29/01/2024 09:43

I've never even thought about it before, but you're right OP 'panty' is a ridiculous word 😂😂

JoanThursday1972 · 29/01/2024 09:49

My cat is obsessed with the strip of paper from these. She's 10 months old and one morning I screwed it up in a ball and threw it for her to chase. Now she stands by my side every morning when I put my knickers on. She knows the routine.

Lanternandbooks · 29/01/2024 09:53

There's a drag artist in Ireland who goes by the stage name of Panty Bliss 🤢
'Panty' appeared in a series of Tesco promotions before Christmas as 'Panty Claus' 🤢😡
Not okay, Tesco!!!

Why is panty sexualised? I'm sure there are plenty of women out there who refer to their owm underwear as panties? I use the word knickers but i don't like it written down. Maybe Op has too much time on their hands to be thinking about this so deeply.

I use the word pants.
