Aibu to think "panty liners" should be re-named?

I'd be happy with "pant liners", but I'm open to other suggestions.

To me, the word "panties" is either a sexualised or infantilised version of the word "pants". I cringe when I see it on supermarket products.

As I said in the OP, for me the word panties is either sexualised (in the fetishist context that pp's have mentioned) or it is infantilised, i.e. a silly name that some very little girls are taught to use for pants. The potential connection between the two contexts is a further and much darker ick factor. I appreciate that if people have been brought up using the word, it may be no more ick than 'knickers', 'briefs' or 'pants', but 50% of the people who have voted so far seem to agree, so I'm not alone.

For you the word has those connotations. For you. Not for me. I just think it's an american word. It's not one i'd ever use, because i'm not american, but i wouldn't be mortally offended by it either.

I'm not mortally offended by it either. But if I was responsible for sales & marketing of the product in the UK I would give it a different name because it clearly gives many women the ick.

Edited

Fair enough. Each to their own.

To be fair, the voting is this way as this is a predominantly UK based site. And knickers/pants seem to be the most commonly used name for underwear there.

If you had to put the question to a fully international site, I think the voting will be very different.

Yes, I agree, but manufacturers do sometimes rename things when they realise the original name doesn't work in one of their key target markets. If it was something more optional like a fizzy drink, they might have done that before now.

The expression "pulling up my big girl panties" that one sometimes reads/hears is so awful I don't even know what to say now.

Oh god where have you heard that said?

I've only ever read "big girl pants" on MN?

Never encountered a woman saying "panties" IRL.

Low brow american novels. Let's hope it's an americanisation that doesn't come to these shores.
Big girl pants is still pretty bad TBF.

I'm in NZ and just checked the box in the cupboard - they are simply referred to as liners on the back of the box, and the front just has their brand name. On checking online some different brands are called panty liners.

However, I really can't be bothered getting worked up about the subject. I would hate to live the lives some of you do, getting so angry and offended about things which in the great scheme don't matter at all. I mean, 10 pages on something so inconsequential?? Ridiculous.

It's humour.

Who got angry or offended @ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming ? Nobody I'm aware of. It has been an interesting chat about a thought that pops into my head when I see the word pantyliners. I was interested to see if other people agreed, to kill time on a long car journey, and it's no more or less trivial than other things I might have a light-hearted chat about with my friends.

Maybe you've missed the point of Mumsnet and mistook it for change.org. 😁

It's helpful youve actually spent the time to check the box for accuracy though. I'm not sure anyone else on this thread will be that dedicated (the lazy things,eh). Good work!!
