For thinking the Barbie film is shit?

Just watched it and it felt like a low brow pseudo feminism lecture (saying this as an actual feminist). All a bit cringe tbh. Not sure what the fuss is about. AIBU?

I loved it.
what's the test for being an "actual" feminist I wonder, OP?

Whether or not you liked Barbie. (Only kidding!)

I completely disagree that it is empowering to women.

The central message seemed to be “look how oppressed, down-trodden and victimised we are 😩😩😩”

How TF is that empowering??

I also could not relate at all to America Ferrera’s big speech, that’s not my experience at all - I am surrounded by happy, confident, accomplished women with high self-worth (and am one myself).

So yeah, it was not for me, I’m afraid!

Agreed. I respect a different opinion but I just can't see why it would make you cry or feel strong emotions at all. I felt it completely cringe worthy.

I remember seeing Cry Freedom about Steve Biko when I was an impressionable young teenager, an emotional reaction to a film like that I could understand. It stays with me to this day. Injustice, we have no idea.

Yes I see my wording didn't go down well, sorry, I didn't mean it like that. What I mean is that there are products/films/music etc marketed as "feminist" that are not, and that are either vapid or rebrands of patriarchy.

Agree with others who thought Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are brilliant in the film, as I think they always are.

It's really interesting if a bit sad to hear from other posters that the film is a feminist education for their kids/young people given the message of the film (men like trucks and being CEOs, defeat them by flirting with other men to make them jealous..?). I thought kids were better versed in gender politics now - or at least a certain form of it given what's going on in schools etc...

It was ok. Didn't think Ken was good looking at all.

SmugglersHaunt · 27/01/2024 14:37

I didn’t think it was funny at all. Also way too long (as most films are now imo). Was like going to a TED Talk

lap90 · 27/01/2024 14:39

It was one of the worst films i saw last year.

Mustardseed86 · 27/01/2024 15:12

I didn't think it was that good, and the feminist speech was just a bit hackneyed. Maybe it's a good message for teenage girls to hear though. I did enjoy the aesthetic of the film, and Ryan Gosling as Ken. I just think it could have been a better plot, less preachy/obvious and more fun, while still having an empowering message.

pepperaunt · 27/01/2024 15:30

I enjoyed Barbie as a bit of fluff, but thought the feminist speech was just cut and pasted in (and too long) when it clearly didn’t belong

Crispsandwichrock · 27/01/2024 16:20

If you thought the speech at the end was out of place, what did you think of the very start of the movie - the distinction between giving girls baby dolls as opposed to Barbie dolls and the difference that made to how they play?

dontforgetme · 27/01/2024 16:21

Oh yes I couldn't agree more. Pile of shite!

Needmorelego · 27/01/2024 16:42

Why do people keep saying about "America Ferrera's speech".
It wasn't her speech ....it was Gloria's.
You know the character America was playing because she's an actress 🙄

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 27/01/2024 16:54

Thought it was awful, I can't believe it's up for any award, before I saw it I thought it might have the ingenuity of Toy Story, but sadly no utter drivel, a shame it could have been so much better.

MyUsernameIsBetterThanYours · 27/01/2024 18:24

@Needmorelego

Because I couldn’t remember the character’s name 🤷🏻‍♀️🙄

Needmorelego · 27/01/2024 18:41

@MyUsernameIsBetterThanYours amusingly the character of Gloria's husband is just listed as "Gloria's Husband" on the credits (actually in Spanish) - his character doesn't have a name 😂
(played by America Ferrera's real life husband)

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 27/01/2024 18:52

It felt a bit trite to me because I've been reading feminist theory and literature for 30 years, but it's a good accessible introduction to feminism for young women who haven't encountered those ideas before.

Ramalangadingdong · 27/01/2024 21:23

There was one bit in the film that I really liked. It was when Ken goes into the real world and it slowly starts to dawn on him that outside Barbie world men are in charge. It really highlighted the part played by socialisation and the way that boys are inducted into the patriarchy.

ohdear43 · 01/02/2024 18:11

I thought it was rubbish.

namechange7458 · 01/02/2024 19:56

Agree OP I didn't like it

QueenMegan · 01/02/2024 22:40

The ending was annoying shouldn't have bothered getting a vagina should have got a job

HeddaGarbled · 01/02/2024 22:46

But that was the joke: we were being set up to think she was going for a job interview. It would have been a bit lame if she was. Best bit of that joke, IMO, was that she was wearing Birkenstocks.

rooftopbird · 02/02/2024 10:27

I turned it off after 40 minutes, couldn't stand it. I thought it was absolutely crap.

Jf20 · 02/02/2024 10:42

I wasn’t a fan either, I felt it was too try hard, and they could have delivered their message better.

i think the cast did an excellent job, but I certainly wasn’t hooked nor did I come out think wow thay was a great movie.

i think the platform was a good idea, but they didn’t execute as well as they could and it got very silly at times, which undermined the message.
