For thinking the Barbie film is shit?

Just watched it and it felt like a low brow pseudo feminism lecture (saying this as an actual feminist). All a bit cringe tbh. Not sure what the fuss is about. AIBU?

Thought it was well overrated. No real story line. Funny moments, but that's about it. Not Oscar worthy. Or worthy of any award in fact.

No real story line? The whole point of the film was the story line and the message was clear.

Topseyt123 · 27/01/2024 03:39

I see mixed reactions to it. I never had any interest in going to see if myself. I'd rather have watched paint dry.

I liked Oppenheimer though.

Oppenheimer was amazing. Definitely worthy of Oscars

Onabench · 27/01/2024 03:58

Same. Loved the first 10 minutes, then it just seemed to push an agenda so hard that they forgot to write a decent storyline to go with it.

kkloo · 27/01/2024 04:04

I think these days a lot of pseudo feminists are more feminist than 'actual' feminists.

Icouldseetinsel · 27/01/2024 05:11

I was really disappointed by Oppenheimer though.. I actually think Barbie was the superior film in the risks that it took. Oppenheimer ended up being a bit too 'hollywood' worthy. I think it massively copped out on passing any real comment on americas actions.
Cillian Murphy did an amazing job though to be fair.

ITookABathWithAinsleyHarriott · 27/01/2024 05:18

I loved the Barbie film. America Ferrera’s speech made me cry because it really touched a nerve with a lot of experiences I’ve had as a woman.

I am an “actual feminist” and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Alwaysdieting · 27/01/2024 05:33

I didnt like it thought it was a bit stupid especially Will Farrer bits. Dont know what all the fuss is about. It wasnt going to be film of the year yet Oscars was expected which makes no sense to me. Dont think it would make the world see women differently its only a film for gods sake.

SweetFemaleAttitude · 27/01/2024 05:40

m00ngirl · 27/01/2024 00:15

Let me guess... you loved the Barbie movie and love Lizzo

Let me guess........you think you are the best feminist ever and unless everyone likes the same things as you, or thinks the same as you, they aren't real feminists and you look down on them with your superior insight into feminism?

Get over yourself.

stayathomer · 27/01/2024 05:47

Does it not depend on your age? Am in my 40s so I’ll have gotten these messages from other films too, but a 15-25 yo will have learnt so much more?

ButterCrackers · 27/01/2024 05:53

It’s the worst film I’ve ever seen. Everyone else was raging about good and how liberating it was and dressing up to see it. Will people watch it on streaming ? The first minutes and then to see if it gets better is my opinion.

SherbetDips · 27/01/2024 05:56

Personally I didn’t enjoy it. Was a load of rubbish.

Imagine starting a thread, about something you want to discuss/complain about, on Mumsnet, where people go to discuss things. Truly odd validation-seeking behaviour.

Ha yes. OP do not say you’re not keen on Taylor Swift or we’ll never get you out alive.

Agree on the film, and the final ‘medical’ scene - ugh. Because yeah that’s a totally exciting thing that women love doing that makes us women! It reminds me of current topical debates in a not good way.

Stopsnowing · 27/01/2024 06:01

It was ok light stuff but waaay overrated

Yes - that final scene! I thought that she would do something to help women or sign up for an education course or go into a library or do something aspirational.

Yes, now she identified as a real woman she got to take her new vagina out for a spin.

Ilovemyshed · 27/01/2024 06:20

It was an amusing piece of fluffy rubbish, saw it at the cinema.

Olivie12 · 27/01/2024 06:33

I used to play with Barbie as a kid; however, the movie didn't have the WOW factor for me. It was "meh good".

No way they deserve an Oscar for Best Actor/Actress; there are much better candidates.

The movie made a lot of money, yes, so did Marvel, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, they were not nominated for an Oscar, and nobody expected to be nominated for one either.

alpenguin · 27/01/2024 06:37

I went in wanting to hate it. The anti-capitalist ine Thought it was a crass
idea, a 2 hour long Mattel advert but I was pleasantly surprised and the feminism element I actually really enjoyed. Didn’t expect to like it but thought it was great. Clearly I’m. I longer an actual feminist or an anti-capitalist.

Alwaysdieting · 27/01/2024 06:44

Also since the film how many Barbies have been sold? I expect loads. How much did everyone involved get paid, I expect millions and now on to the next money spinner, so to me not getting feminism across for free.
Everyone in the Mr Bates vs The Post Office took a pay drop so it could be made. So stuff stupid Barbie and Ken and thier weak message.

MyUsernameIsBetterThanYours · 27/01/2024 06:53

@m00ngirl

Totally overrated. Ridiculous that it was nominated for any Oscars.

I think if it hadn’t come with all the hype of being brilliant and amazingly feminist I probably would have enjoyed it for the lightweight piece of fluff that it is.

And all the hoopla about America Ferrara’s speech 🙄

Ramalangadingdong · 27/01/2024 06:55

Hey, op. I totally agree with you and it is a relief to find someone who feels the same way. There are a couple of films out at the moment that claim to be feminist and which make me think that if that is so then feminism must have lost its way. I count Poor Things as one of those films - even though, like Barbie, its production values - performances, design, music, costumes etc are pretty incredible.

I thought Anatomy of a Fall was a great feminist film - nuanced and sophisticated and would recommend it.

BobnLen · 27/01/2024 06:56

I haven't watched it yet, I keep meaning to, I had it as a freebie on Sky in December, I wish it had been Oppenheimer instead. I might make the effort to watch it this weekend in a dull moment

LlynTegid · 27/01/2024 06:56

I'm glad I missed it, even though have enjoyed most of Greta Gerwig's other work.

SD1978 · 27/01/2024 06:57

It was alright, but nothing great. We went with some kids about 9-11 and they didn't love it or loathe it- same as the adults. The woman 'rant' was hardly groundbreaking- it's all stuff we have heard before. I'm juts Ken as a song was bloody funny and genuinely enjoyed the Ken's more than the barbies.

Ken’s dance number was amazing. Ryan Gosling was very very funny. I hope the film wins Oscars for costume and set design and choreography* because being immersed in Barbie world was really funny, but I thought the script was shite.

  • I don’t think there is an Oscar for choreography, is there?
