For thinking the Barbie film is shit?

Just watched it and it felt like a low brow pseudo feminism lecture (saying this as an actual feminist). All a bit cringe tbh. Not sure what the fuss is about. AIBU?

NeedAllTheHelpICanGet1 · 27/01/2024 00:34

It was shit.

Workwhat · 27/01/2024 00:41

Scautish · 26/01/2024 23:56

YANBU as clearly every single person who has watched it before you loved it unconditionally yet you have the intelligence and insight to point out why we are all wrong.

I bow to your superior intellect.

Aye this 🤣

ManchesterBea · 27/01/2024 00:42

Terrible movie

@Scautish Actually laughing that you think someone saying "I think the Barbie film is a bit shit" is someone posing as "intellectual" 🤣

Maybe it's the opposite - perhaps am I missing something about the film? Barbie land is plastic fantastic, Barbies are diverse, but real world is patriarchy, men like trucks and horses and being CEOs, America Ferrera does TikTok style feminist pep talks, then it's better.

Felt cringe to me tbh.

I’m with @Scautish here - you didn’t just express an opinion on a movie, you asked if you were unreasonable to hold that opinion. Which suggests that you think that it might be - that it’s somehow courageous or iconoclastic. Otherwise why ask? It’s a perfectly mainstream opinion in fact - many people have said and written the same things.

Full disclosure: I found the Barbie movie fun and nostalgic and enjoyable light entertainment. But it’s got people talking about feminism/patriarchy/women’s perceived roles so that’s a good thing. I also consider myself an “actual” feminist.

VeryGoodVeryNice · 27/01/2024 00:51

Yeah it was pretty bollocks IMO. I was stuck on a plane for 10.5 hours with limited choice of things to watch and I still only managed half of it.

Precipice · 27/01/2024 00:53

Scautish · 27/01/2024 00:15

but you didn’t just say it. You started a thread on MN about it. You needed the validation. I gave that to you. And I say that as an actual formally recognised feminist validation specialist

Imagine starting a thread, about something you want to discuss/complain about, on Mumsnet, where people go to discuss things. Truly odd validation-seeking behaviour.

SingleMum11 · 27/01/2024 00:54

It’s heart was in the right place though!

I agree it’s no amazing voice for feminism, but criticising it feels like kicking a cute fluffy puppy…

echt · 27/01/2024 00:55

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was tip-top.

It shouldn't. Your cute fluffy puppy is a plastic advertising mascot.

Delphiniumandlupins · 27/01/2024 00:57

I liked it. In fact I loved it. Lots of people came out of the cinema talking about the film and discussing issues raised. It wasn't flawless but it was different and made me laugh.

KarenNotAKaren · 27/01/2024 01:00

There were very good feministy parts but I didn’t really I’d rest and the moral LFT he story. It flung from “Patriarchy is bad” to “Matriarchy is bad” to “We aren’t sure what’s bad” and “It’s ok for men to cry”.

The America Ferrera speech was good but I prefer this one

I thought it was fun and funny. Over-sentimental as most American films are.

Ryan Gosling was a hoot. Most of the scenes with Will Ferrell were silly, and Rhea Perlman just daft, but the scenes where the Barbies distracted the Kens by getting them to talk about investments and The Godfather etc made me laugh.

The dioramas when they were travelling between Barbieland and the real world were clever. Loved the scene with the construction crew in the real world, and how they came over all woke (“that’s OK”) when Barbie told them she doesn’t have a vagina.

So, no, not shit. Not a masterpiece, but not shit.

As a “feminist”, surely you can understand why there has been a “fuss” about the first ever film by a female director (with a female producer, and aimed at a female audience) to break box office records.

HeddaGarbled · 27/01/2024 01:06

Also Alan fighting off all the Kens in the background while America Fererra has a bonding moment with her daughter 😃

2Noope · 27/01/2024 01:09

I liked it, and I like that it exists - but only watched it last week after hearing all the hype and I was very much expecting more. It was just OK, somewhat fun but slightly disappointing after all the media frenzy.

Mittens1717 · 27/01/2024 01:13

Yanbu, it was shit, most definitely not worthy of an Oscar

SeaglassSigil · 27/01/2024 01:15

It's crap. To be honest, I don't like any of Greta Gerwig's films, but gave it a go anyway. Disappointed!

WandaWonder · 27/01/2024 01:24

The barbie movie is crap, I'm shocked, ok not at all but what on earth are people expecting?

beeNqueen · 27/01/2024 02:00

Terrible, I was looking to be entertained not educated! Felt like it was to preachy... had a great concept but it didn't really wow me

SisterSabotage · 27/01/2024 02:03

Cringe post. Are we meant to be interested? Impressed?

Tatumm · 27/01/2024 02:24

I believed all the hype so I was disappointed when I finally got to watch it.

Icouldseetinsel · 27/01/2024 03:02

YABU
It was really fun. And visually I thought it was wonderful. I also admired whst she had done with the concept. Surprised Mattel let her make what really is quite an interesting film rather than just a giant advert.
Was very pleasantly surprised by it as its not the type of thing I'd usually watch.

LameBorzoi · 27/01/2024 03:08

It was so hyped up, like it was some ground breaking feminist treatise. I thought it wasn't bad, but kind of meh.

YankSplaining · 27/01/2024 03:24

I’m a doll collector and I know a lot about the history of Barbie, so I found it fun on that level. I liked the in-jokes for Barbie fans - Ruth Handler and the IRS, Earring Magic Ken, pregnant Midge, “I’ll see you on the Malibu beach!”

I didn’t go to it expecting a deep dive on feminism. I went to it excited to see how they’d make a live-action Barbie world and hoping for some good jokes. On that level, I thought it was great.

JMSA · 27/01/2024 03:31

I was underwhelmed. And Barbie was my favourite childhood toy (after Sindy)!

Topseyt123 · 27/01/2024 03:39

I see mixed reactions to it. I never had any interest in going to see if myself. I'd rather have watched paint dry.

I liked Oppenheimer though.
