For thinking the Barbie film is shit?

Just watched it and it felt like a low brow pseudo feminism lecture (saying this as an actual feminist). All a bit cringe tbh. Not sure what the fuss is about. AIBU?

I went with my friends to see it and we enjoyed it. I'll probably never watch it again but it was a fun film to see at the cinema.

heartsinvisiblefury · 27/01/2024 07:07

Totally agree with the OP.

W0tnow · 27/01/2024 07:08

Is it an age thing I wonder? I’m 55 and I thought it was a bit meh…

BusySittingDown · 27/01/2024 07:09

YANBU to not like it. Everyone has different tastes.

I loved it! However, my bar for what classes as good film and television is ridiculously low.

I was really disappointed by Oppenheimer though.. I actually think Barbie was the superior film in the risks that it took. Oppenheimer ended up being a bit too 'hollywood' worthy. I think it massively copped out on passing any real comment on americas actions.
Cillian Murphy did an amazing job though to be fair.

I agree with you that the film copped out on exploring the devastating consequences of America’s actions - which is actually reprehensible - but then the film would not have been nominated for Oscars if they had done that because the Oscars are essentially very conservative.

chocolatelover91 · 27/01/2024 07:10

I just didn't like it in general! And worst of all, I had to go with my MIL. Not sure which part was worse 🤣🩷

I loved it. Colourful, whimsical, playful.

Yes, it was a movie that portrayed female oppression and the unreasonably high expectations of women, but it also covered the emotional suffering of men due to the expectations placed upon them. A good balance I thought.

Agree.

It's a lighthearted kitsch way of presenting a serious message through the use of globally popular (and hereto often also dismissed as "cringe") toys.

It shows that you don't have to be dusty beige and bookish to share a feminist view.

I didn't see any aspect of it as cringe cos that's my viewpoint as well. If you prefer serious messages to be delivered only in a serious way then fine, but I have to say if you're an "actual" feminist I'm surprised you don't applaud the movie in its huge success at bringing feminism to a wider and younger audience.

It's fine to not enjoy the film but if you share its aims why wouldn't you appreciate how successful it's been on that front?

chocolatelover91 · 27/01/2024 07:11

But I do love margot Robbie 😀😍

ButterCrackers · 27/01/2024 06:11

Yes - that final scene! I thought that she would do something to help women or sign up for an education course or go into a library or do something aspirational.

Omg! This!!

Felicia19 · 27/01/2024 07:16

It grew on me. I thought the beginning was boring, with everyone saying 'Hey, Barbie," but it improved.

I think I'm a tiny bit in love with Ryan Gosling (even though I'm old enough to be his mum). I loved his song "I'm just Ken," it was so funny. The words were so bad that they were good! ("And I'm great at doing stuff...")

I loved the sets, with the life size Barbie houses and her car.

I thought the feminism bits were rather laboured though.

Sausagenbacon · 27/01/2024 07:18

I loved it, but perhaps because I wasn't trying to see it as a feminist film. The big speech was trite and boring, IMO, and I found end scene was weird.
But it was fun. I loved ryan gosling in it, and the music was great.

BusySittingDown · 27/01/2024 07:18

Ryan Gosling was excellent. The only bloke ever who could pull off a fur coat and headband IMO.

BusySittingDown · 27/01/2024 07:20

Now I have the "I'm Just Ken" song going around in my head. Great, that's me done in for the day!

What made it really cringe for me was the way the film purported to make fun of the real-life all-male Barbie corporates while crawling up their backsides by locating them within the film as “fun” comic book villains-who-aren’t-really-villains.

Ramalangadingdong · 27/01/2024 07:26

chocolatelover91 · 27/01/2024 07:11

But I do love margot Robbie 😀😍

Of course. The good thing about the Barbie film is that it has now made her wealthy enough that she can produce decent films that provide better roles for her acting chops (I thought she was brilliant in the Tarantino film - one of the best things in it).

W0tnow · 27/01/2024 07:33

I’m sad they missed a golden opportunity in the Barbie movie to say ‘Ken-oath’! at some point.

Peekingovertheparapet · 27/01/2024 07:37

I went to see it with very low expectations - in fact, my main aim/expectation was to have seen it so I could have an informed opinion about why it was dreadful.

I actually loved it - it was whimsical, and definitely not super deep, but it was a pretty good crash course in basic feminism/patriarchy. To that end, I considered that I probably wasn’t the target audience, but that it was potentially a ‘spice girls moment’ for a whole new generation. I feel like it had some powerful positive messages for young women.

I thought Ken was way better than Barbie as a character but I really embraced the silliness. But then I’ve always been a sucker for silly humour.

LittleLittleRex · 27/01/2024 07:37

I liked it and am a fairly well versed feminist!

I didn't find the speech to be anything I hadn't heard a hundred times before, but I also realise that a lot of 12-18yo girls might not have. Just because it's been said before, doesn't mean it's fixed.

I'm also aware that feminism is in a different place in the US, so it was great to see something woman centred and not just general equality calling itself feminism.

Bulkypeepants · 27/01/2024 07:38

Just to jump in, I also thought Oppenheimer was bad too

Stupidliefromfriend · 27/01/2024 07:40

It was insanely boring and I hated it.

Blueberry40 · 27/01/2024 07:52

I felt exactly the same OP. Don’t want to say much more as I’ll get mauled by all the fans. So will just say that imo it was a really shit movie and I can’t understand how so many people felt that it helped them understand feminism. It was painful to watch.

tallsmallmum · 27/01/2024 07:55

I found it very well....stiff tho there were a few funny bits "reality challenged woman" 🤣
and Ken being that age 🤦🏽‍♀️ the whole concept of being played with too hard was a bit strange/non sensical as was horses/beach.... sadly had to take my younger two separately so cringed through it the second time. what might've saved it was if they'd made it years ago with real Ruth Handler coz then you could have a happy cry

whiteroseredrose · 27/01/2024 07:57

I thought it was fun.

DD (20) and I enjoyed spotting the houses and cars that she used to have, and laughed at the camp dance routines.

I don't think it was meant to have a deep meaningful message.

I agree with you that the film copped out on exploring the devastating consequences of America’s actions - which is actually reprehensible - but then the film would not have been nominated for Oscars if they had done that because the Oscars are essentially very conservative.

I’ve heard this criticism a few times about Oppenheimer, and my response is the film is about Oppenheimer; it is a biopic. The film exploring the consequences of the US’s use of nuclear weapons would (should) be a quite a different film.

Actually, I think it would have been reprehensible to try and depict that in a few short minutes within the biopic - there wouldn’t be nearly enough time or space to cover it in enough detail (unless you want to watch a nine hour film!)

I really liked the film overall, and loved the fact that a summer blockbuster could be about a theoretical physicist and people actually would want to see it. Yay science - now all we need is a Feynman biopic :-)

Also - OP, what a tedious bloody post, honestly. “I’m an actual feminist (whatever that is) but I didn’t like the Barbie movie, waa!” O…K? You know you don’t have to like it, right? In the true spirit of feminism, you have a choice!

boobot1 · 27/01/2024 08:42

It was utter drivel. Worst film I've seen in a long time and I've got netflix!
