Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

They wouldn't be able to send DP due to his job.

What jobs would exempt people?

Ww2
Medicine, including pharmacy
Manufacturing
Bakers
Farmers
Police

Whatever is needed to run the country
Doubt bakers would be these days
There will be IT specialists and such these days

@WinterMorn why wouldn't China want this? They aren't fans of the west by a long shot and currently it seems like the west is crumbling...we look weak. I think they would seize any opportunity especially if Russia-Iran-Korea etc all joined forces

Because any sort of nuclear interaction would drag in/threaten the entire world. Once the taboo is broken, it puts them at risk too.

Posypointshoes · 25/01/2024 20:50

So how would it work with parents? Men called up and women left to mind the children, or does it depend on occupation? Ie if you're a stay at home mum for example.

EasternStandard · 25/01/2024 20:50

Naptrappedmummy · 25/01/2024 20:47

I think it’s actually a huge indicator of just how privileged the British public are, even under Tory governance. The naivety and exceptionalism is laughable.

Yes we are very removed and you can see it on these threads

It will depend on occupation
If they are both fit to fight and are not in exempt jobs maybe they will be able to chose which one fights.
The Govn would want to allow some form of choice I guess.

Russia is struggling in Ukraine, they aren’t going to start a war with us. Only one would be nuclear. Plus, we don’t share a border with Russia, how would this happen. Biggest issue here is a terrorist attack from the Middle East. Russia won’t be doing anything to the U.K.

also, it’s a lot of countries helping Ukraine. Why are they going to target us? Conscripts won’t work in this county. Nobody wants to fight anymore. If anything it’d be people with a useful trade.

My DH thinks if Trump wins the US election he will withdraw aid from the Ukraine which would massively increase Russia's chance of advancing.

ballsdeep · 25/01/2024 19:35

You can’t even get someone’s pronouns wrong these days without a huge outcry so I doubt this is going to happen!!

Whilst my first goes to this and people’s extreme sensitivity id like to believe that if the place turned into a war zone people would get off their whingey arses and get to work.

Sadly i can imagine a lot of fully grown people crying about how unfair everything is and how their squadron leader is “picking” on them or some such similar crap. Or men identifying as women to get out of doing any work.

Women wouldn’t be conscripted for combat purposes. They’d be put to work making weapons, food production, nursing, logistics. We would basically have to take over everything else while the men did the fighting.

JanewaysBun · 25/01/2024 20:54

As a thought experiment (because I really dont see thus happening): i think a lot of young people would sign up, SM and peer pressure I think would play a large part in this, people are already swayed by propaganda online so i think this is how they would recruit people

Women would be called up, although i suppose could just get pregnant to avoid it. Fwiw DD would be 100 x more deadly than DS in a combat situation (!)

I wouldn't worry OP, it's an election year/way to make a point about funding for the AF (which does need to be addressed). The west fights wars by proxy nowadays, Russia has no interest in invading us, it has a long history with Ukraine.

WinterMorn · 25/01/2024 20:55

@Naptrappedmummy you talk a lot of sense. Also, @Mambo19866 I agree with you - I don’t think that there would be an inevitable escalation to nukes as ultimately, nobody wants to pay the ultimate price.

Theothersideofthefence · 25/01/2024 20:55

Another WLA.

Equality and equity etc. is for times of peace and luxury. Those policies will disappear very quickly once there is an actual need for meat shields.

Not least because we have known for millennia that sending the womb-holders away to be killed is irretrievably stupid.

It is against the law these days
Times have moved on and this is Govn policy

WinterMorn · 25/01/2024 20:57

That would be swiftly binned if we moved to a wartime stance.

hogmanayhoolie · 25/01/2024 20:57

@Willyoujustbequiet To be fair - there is no comparison

Neverpostagain · 25/01/2024 20:58

If it has come to the stage of having to call up peoples random and probably quite useless sons things are going to already be pretty bad! The country will be well beyond caring about conscientious objections and well into military rule, and martial law.

StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips · 25/01/2024 19:33

Its a scaremongering tactic to highlight the lack of budget for armed forces rather than anything that will happen in reality.

It would be totally unworkable and unrealistic to do it these days.

This is what I understood too - that the guy has form for complaining the armed forces don't get enough money, and was effectively saying "pay for more professional soldiers - or else this..."

theduchessofspork · 25/01/2024 21:00

@Needsomebloodyperspective

She’s worried about conscription, or invasion of the Uk, or a war full stop??

Conscription thing is nonsense - it’s just a way to drum up support for expanding our (currently very contracted) armed forces. War has changed a lot in the last half century and direct combat at scale is not where it’s at.

Russia isn’t going to invade the Uk. Putin would like a bit of an Empire but that means the buffer zone of the old USsR, not Blackpool. Russia does have an economy the size of Belgium though, so they are a rogue state, not a superpower. It could be worse.

There are always wars of course but the chances of one seriously impacting on your daughter, unless it goes nuclear, are quite small. Food and fuel supply chains and stuff.

This!

Tantaijin · 25/01/2024 21:00

They would have no chance.

Conscription would only work if there was a sense of patriotism, national pride, and the idea that your country was worth fighting for and to proud of.

Basically everything that has been stomped out of the British for the last few decades. As an outsider looking in, it’s clear those who still have some national pride and wave flags etc. are looked down upon as thick or racist people.

Why would people die over a piece of land that they have been told is not theirs?

SemperIdem · 25/01/2024 21:01

Women wouldn’t be conscripted en mass for front line combat. It simply wouldn’t happen.

Rape in war against civilian women and girls is absolutely notorious and always has been. No nation is going to want a frontline just as vulnerable to that as the civilians they’re seeking to protect.

Women signing up for frontline duty would remain voluntary, as it is now.

theleafandnotthetree · 25/01/2024 21:03

Naptrappedmummy · 25/01/2024 20:15

I have a (baby) DS, a brother in his 20s and a DP who is in good health so would likely be conscripted if this happened.

I have to say all this ‘over my dead body will my DH/DS/DB go to war’ bemuses me. Firstly it would be compulsory, so you wouldn’t be able to stop it. Secondly what do you think would happen if they didn’t?! A gentle occupation where we learn a second language? It would be worse for most men than going to fight where at least they’re trying to control their own destiny.

It would be horrific but life is occasionally horrific. We are no more ‘worthy’ and ‘special’ than the people who have been caught up in wars for the past however many hundreds of years. It’s like some people simply can’t cope with the idea of life not being inherently fair and just.

Finally, some sense! It's the last 70 years that's the anomoly in human history, at least in Western Europe. We literally have never had it so good, that the great majority of people get to live to adulthood and then old age, that we have lived without significant war or famine or danger, that our children get to mostly live lives of their choosing. This are all wonderful things but they are not God given or immutable, they can and probably will change for one reason or another. If its not war if the conventional sort it will be resource wars or the outcome of climate change. We none of us are special, we're just lucky.

@Justpontificating
Could we assume that prison service staff and paramedics would also be exempt then?
