Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

They wouldn’t be fighting ‘for the country’, they would be fighting to stop an invading force doing… unspeakable things to them and the people they care about. It’s hilarious how many people think if you just refuse to fight, the war stops there!

Yes the horror doesn’t just go away

It is a fact that unless the Russians were literally on the beaches, the womenfolk will be left alone.
If conscription happens (which it won't), it'll be the 18-24s, 24-36s, 36-50s... THEN the women.

It's also a fact that if Russia got as far as our beaches (which they won't, not least because they're just not interested), the nuclear fallout will be the pressing concern since they will have recently all been fired off.

I’m afraid that’s incorrect.
That was the modus operandi in ww2
Its not the same now and women have been on the front line for a long time.
It is policy that they are not discriminated against in the armed forces and will be called up with their ages group.
If it happens at all
It would now be against the law not to treat all equally

Differentstarts · 25/01/2024 20:39

People saying they wouldn't fight or let their children fight would you still feel that way when their coming into your towns and cities killing your families. I don't think we particularly need to worry about war as if it ever becomes a reality it will most likely be a nuclear war, so you really won't know much about it. But saying you won't fight makes you sound ridiculous because your not understanding the realities of war.

Willyoujustbequiet · 25/01/2024 20:38

To be fair for many people it couldn't get any worse than what their lives have become under this government....

It will never happen OP. People will refuse after the mess and lies that was covid.

You sound ridiculous. The worst poverty in this country is absolutely nothing compared to how Russian people have been treated by their government

WickerMam · 25/01/2024 19:54

This is being whipped up by a tory press, planting seeds of "who would you trust at a time of war - a strong right winger, or a woke human rights loving lefty". Ignore it - worrying about it is pointless.

This. This is pre election bollocks.

Can you not see consider the reality of an invasion? I think people are so removed, luckily for us, they post this stuff

They can fuck off if they think my children are fighting in any land war. I don't think anybody else's children should either. I would rather Russia just took over than a generation were sacrificed to prevent it.

Well I for one politely disagree. I would take up arms, and be prepared to die, to stop Russia invading, conquering and ruling our country.

BurkeWalter · 25/01/2024 20:41

What would the result be if it was ET invading Earth eg Independence day type situation ?

ATerrorofLeftovers · 25/01/2024 20:41

Beezknees · 25/01/2024 20:36

Ha. People are disillusioned with this country and rightly so. Record breaking number of people living in poverty, why would they want to fight for a country that is failing them?

People would be fighting for all of us as a nation, not the government, thankfully. The fact we’re suffering under the shittest government in history wouldn’t ever lead me to roll over and let Putin shaft us all.

AluminiumandGold6 · 25/01/2024 20:42

Never been so glad to have severe mental health issues in all my life.

My dad's too old.

They wouldn't be able to send DP due to his job.

My nephew is autistic with mental age of an 8 year old at 19 years of age.

They can take my brother, I will drop him off in Russia if need be while I'm on my way to New Zealand

Fetchthevet · 25/01/2024 20:44

SmellyKat10 · 25/01/2024 20:21

Not really the point of the post, but ok.

Probably a stupid question, but who will look after the children if women are called up too?

tiredmama23 · 25/01/2024 20:44

They wouldn't be able to send DP due to his job.

What jobs would exempt people?

dangerrabbit · 25/01/2024 20:44

Sounds like the latest scare tactic to keep people voting tory.

Mambo19866 · 25/01/2024 20:44

If Russia does push further into NATO China will likely take the opportunity to retake Taiwan forcing the American pacific fleet to deal with that reducing their effective force elsewhere. Iran likely will war with Pakistan. Russia said it would use nuclear weapons only if Russia is attacked. I’d imagine a gentleman’s agreement will be made to not use nuclear weapons and traditional warfare might happen. What you are likely to see is a false flag attack on NATO soil to encourage the population to want to defend itself it’s the same thing on repeat throughout history. Germany joined in ww1 by convincing their population They had been attacked.

Just lost my original response so writing it again. I barely slept a wink last night because of this. I feel that successive governments in our country have sat back and allowed the de-industrialisation of the UK. Manufacturing has declined sharply and we have lost ship building and steel industries to name but a few. There is too much focus on academia and not enough on things such as engineering. Our armed forces are massively underfunded and have been allowed to dwindle to pitiful levels. What exactly has our current Government achieved over the last 15 years? We are living in very dangerous times and need massive investment in our armed forces. What if Russia invades Finland? It's practically next door to the UK. It feels like the Government have done nothing to prepare for this and now things are ramping up it looks like in the not too distant future they will be asking Joe Public to step up to the front line to make up for their lack of planning. How many members of the Government will be expected to do the same I wonder? I'm sure they will be hiding in their bunkers protected away from any danger. I wish I could offer some words of comfort OP but I am genuinely worried for my children's future and I worry about what the future holds for our country.

PropertyManager · 25/01/2024 20:46

But journalists, whats going on over there, look behind you, above and below, left and right.

This is a classic horse poop distraction story, designed to get people chattering and journalists missing something...

Last time single parents were exempt.
If 2 parents and say one parent is a doctor, for example ( male or female) as he / she would be exempt they take the childcare and the other gets called up.

I really wouldn't lose sleep over it. If your an overly anxious person I'd stay away from all types of media until a different news story takes hold and its forgotten about

YesSirMam · 25/01/2024 20:47

Russia is struggling in Ukraine, they aren’t going to start a war with us. Only one would be nuclear. Plus, we don’t share a border with Russia, how would this happen. Biggest issue here is a terrorist attack from the Middle East. Russia won’t be doing anything to the U.K.

also, it’s a lot of countries helping Ukraine. Why are they going to target us? Conscripts won’t work in this county. Nobody wants to fight anymore. If anything it’d be people with a useful trade.

I think it’s actually a huge indicator of just how privileged the British public are, even under Tory governance. The naivety and exceptionalism is laughable.

Posypointshoes · 25/01/2024 20:48

@WinterMorn why wouldn't China want this? They aren't fans of the west by a long shot and currently it seems like the west is crumbling...we look weak. I think they would seize any opportunity especially if Russia-Iran-Korea etc all joined forces

BronwenTheBrave · 25/01/2024 20:48

My son was in the special forces when Russia had a feared army, less than 10 years ago. He said he would desert if ordered to fight a land battle in Europe against the Russians. His view is very different now.

BeyondMyWits · 25/01/2024 20:48

We are an island, so would probably not be "invaded" as such.

EMP, or hacking would be weapons of choice. Conscripts would be needed to maintain public order in the event of no electronics, no Internet, darkness descending.

Found it a bit ironic, the juxtaposition of - carry a knife and you'll be arrested - with - we'll conscript you and train you to shoot people.

Equality and equity etc. is for times of peace and luxury. Those policies will disappear very quickly once there is an actual need for meat shields.

Not least because we have known for millennia that sending the womb-holders away to be killed is irretrievably stupid.

There would be too many conscientious objectors these days. And probably more pregnancies.....
