Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

Can people please stop saying THE Ukraine? It’s Ukraine. THE Ukraine is the Russian styling.

Why would you want to post that? Why even think it? NO IT IS NOT. It is The Ukraine, just like we say The US. It has always been The Ukraine; also The Crimea. It may be something to do with the consonants which follow the 'U', We also say The UK. I like to think that the 'The' goes back to the Crimean War and before. Certainly it gave the Ukraine the prestige it deserved after the suffering in WW2.

The USA and the UK are both short forms of United Blah of Flibble. It's grammatically correct to prepend the definite article to a phrase describing a group:

  • The Alps (there's more than one mountain)
  • The United Kingdom of Great Britain (this is describing an island with several nations on it) and Northern Ireland
  • The United States (more than one) of America

Ukraine and Crimea are not groups, so no definite article. We don't say "the Australia".

Just ask yourself this question, why would Putin even want to invade Europe?

We have no natural resources they need whatsoever, our cities are dumps, their is nothing Europe has that Russia doesn't.

It is the NATO/Globalist alliance that wants to attack Russia!

Ah. It's all NATO's fault

Got it 🤣🤣

Sorry but this is not correct. The official Ukrainian position is that "The Ukraine" is both grammatically and politically incorrect. The use of ‘The Ukraine’ relates to the time before independence in 1991, when Ukraine was a republic of the Soviet Union known as ‘The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic’ and was known as The Borderland. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukrainians decided that the ‘The’ article denigrated their country by identifying it as a part of Russia and abolished it. Ukraine is the name stated in the Ukrainian Declaration of Independence and Constitution.

WinterMorn · 27/01/2024 12:51

@llizzie you are totally incorrect. It’s UKRAINE. Why don’t you get that? If you don’t believe me, why don’t you take it up with the Embassy, who were saying this over a decade ago…..

To wonder why people aren’t worried about this??

Unlikely you’ll get one. I posted pretty much the same information. Amazing how fast people disappear from threads after being called out for posting nonsense !!

If Labour get in does this similarity to Russia still apply?

Out of interest

At the moment it would appear so, sadly. Starmer doesn't show any interest in reversing either the reactionary social attitudes or the antidemocratic manouverings of the Tories. His tenure as Labour leader has been marked by the most cynical corruption in the service of authoritarian control, so one can only imagine that's how he means to go on.

I agree. Seems like people would rather live under a communist dictatorship.

You do know Russia hasn't been communist for over 30 years, right?

Ummmm Russia literally invaded Europe when it invaded Ukraine (NB not THE Ukraine). NATO has not attacked or invaded Russia. No we do not want to attack Russia. Ask yiurself why on earth we would want to do that? And in fact I'd argue we aren't being robust enough in holding them back. Russia is operating against us on various fronts through its allies. It really is time to stand up for democracy. So we still have the freedom to say stupid Russian propagandist shit like some of the posts on this thread.

We have gay marriage here. Russia doesn't. That's one respect in which we beat Russia.

If we don't have a democracy, how come we had a Brexit referendum?

Edited

The same reason we have anything. Because it served the interests of a certain section of the ruling class to take us out of the European Union.

If Russia is not a democracy, how come it has elections? I didn't say either country was "not a democracy". I said they were nominal ones that function more like oligarchies. There are certain procedures to make a show of democracy, with rules and restrictions and choices carefully devised to ensure they can't threaten the power or economic privilege of the establishment.

Sure, you have a point - we have gay marriage, and probably a few other things I could think of that are better than Russia. Pretty low bar though, for a country that considers itself a beacon of enlightened western democracy. I expect more. If the government wants my loyalty, it will need to give me more.

This has been coming for quite a while so I'm wondering why people are expressing surprise. Considering our substantial military reduction and what's been going on in Ukraine, Belarus, Moscow, Finland or off the Scottish coastline daily, this issue was just a matter of time.

It's part of the mess which the current Gov have made, sure, and it's entirely on them, but we need to be talking about where this has left us and what needs to happen moving forward.

What's been comin? Once again: nothing has actually happened. Nobody in any position of power to make it happen has even suggested that it's going to happen.

The fact that Labour can get in is the difference

That's the thing. They can only get in because there is no difference.

And Russia is a multi-party electoral democracy. Their governments can be replaced just like ours.

raspberryjuiceandpompoms · 27/01/2024 13:56

Ukrainian wheat is 9% of world trade. China is 17%, followed by India followed by Russia. FYI. Actually in 2020 Ukrainian wheat was 3.1% of the global trade

and there can’t be Russian styling of THE Ukraine or Ukraine because Russians speak Russian and not English therefore they don’t have THE particle…

You think that's a joke? I'm struggling to work out what's even questionable about it. We know what his policies are (to the extent that he has any) and his actions as Labour leader are a matter of public record, albeit not widely reported. This is just factual.

ProtectMotherNature · 27/01/2024 14:00

The thought of our nation not being able to defend itself terrifies me. What also puzzles me is that our government is really fond of trumpeting how vulnerable we are. In May 2023, there were questions regarding the detrimental affects to our RAF due to the of training Ukrainian pilots; at that time the government were still toying with the idea of more cuts to the armed forces, or increases due to growing security threats in Europe. The costs of maintaining our armed forces is immense; if our current government hadn't squandered so much money over this past 14 years, maybe we wouldn't be in such a mess now. Ukraine is - by default, fighting on our behalf and we cannot afford, in any way, shape or form to stop supporting them.

WinterMorn · 27/01/2024 14:02

@EasternStandard yes, I was. I agree that this has become the replacement drum to beat. It’s the same crowd all over again.
