Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

The News Quiz tonight made me laugh. They said the only ones with the chops to join up and fight are the WWII veterans, so basically we’d have to send the nonagenarians. Gen Z and Alpha would want their support animals, Gen X and Millenials would ask if they could do it over Zoom and need the combat zone to be near a good or outstanding school and Boomers like the idea of war but they’ve never really fought in one .

Good point. Perhaps better to identify as a chocolate teapot or something else equally unfit for army purpose.

Personally, I would move somewhere else if this became reality (sorry but my DS’ welfare is more important to me than any war).

Your user name is hysterical given what you said.

Nala and Simba fought Scar to save their land and people.

The idea of a war broke out you could just move is unrealistic.

Bululu · 27/01/2024 00:14

And lol to all the posters who think Russian rule will be better than tories. I don't even know where to start.

Scary people are definitely crazy to say that.

Do you think that your sons would be allowed to leave?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · Yesterday 22:57 That doesn't equate with the seriousness of what is happening. It is not as simple as that. Putin thought he would win the Ukraine. He made a mistake there, but it isn't Ukraine he wants. He wants to lay it waste - a no mans land if you will. He says he does not want a NATO country on his border. He is destroying cities, without any intention of rebuilding them. Terrorists from Syria are fighting for Russia. They have been promised land in the Ukraine, but won't get it provided we stop him. When he went into Syria he was after that part of the Med coast. He will have to work hard for it. Iran wants Lebanon. Between the two of them they can do a lot of harm. If they can win Israel, it will be impossible for the world to protect itself.

Turkey would do well to separate itself from those of the Arab world hell bent on conquering the world in their life time. They are uneducated goons who are incapable of thinking for themselves. They know only the ''listen to me, listen to me'' life. That makes Iran and Russia more powerful than anyone realises.

How did the Great War jingle go? 'Austria was Hungary, ate a bit of Turkey dipped in Greece. Long legged Italy kicked poor Sicily right into the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.' Not so silly, just shows how conflict starts when no one is paying too much attention.

Putin is worse than Hitler, because he has not learned the lesson of Hitler's Nazis, or if he has, he wants to expand on it. That makes him even worse than Hitler. Hitler was killing millions of Jews for a decade before the world believed it, or was brave enough to stop him. Putin and Ayatollah whatshisname are attracted to that scenario, and they are dangerous.

He appears to want to recreate the USSR. Perhaps he does, but he wants to spread out far wider than East Europe. He wants a port on the Mediterranean Sea. He wants to control world trade, and he will not obtain either by just annexing more East European countries which have not yet joined NATO and the EU. Putin is looking to Scandinavia for some control of the North Sea. He thinks he can achieve that, and it is possible so long as the world is complacent.

His ally Iran is a danger to the world. Iran supplies Russia with artillery; supports terrorist groups and destroys the freedom of women, subjugating them, as does the Taliban. They divert attention from other things. Iran has long wanted access to sea - and for that it will do anything. Iraq longs for a friendly route to the sea as well. Putin's idea of creating another USSR is to rule the infrastructure of major countries, and shopping, trade, not invading countries because they are on his doorstep. China should be increasing the military on it's borders, because China is not going to allow Putin and the Ayatollah whatshisname to rule it's waves.

I have values worth fighting for, they're just not represented by my government.

Putin presides over a nominal democracy with a corrupted electoral system and highly concentrated control of socially divisive propaganda, causing it to function in practice more like a semi-fascist oligarchy.

So pretty much like the UK then.

This is one of the stupidest things I've ever read on mumsnet. When is the last time our government assassinated a political opponent? Do some research. Ask a Russian. Honestly, like youth on the young, free speech is wasted on people lucky enough (due to the sacrifices of their forebears) to live in a democracy.

It really is

Wisenotboring · 27/01/2024 09:10

I simply can't imagine what use the current generation of late teens to maybe mid 20s would actually be. Government policy and changes in society have resulted in the most overweight and unfit cohort in generations. Life expectancy is reducing in some groups.

Soldiers are trained. Lots of young people are very fit, energetic & clued up.

I’ve been trying to think about posts I’ve read that compare to that one. Someone not realizing that Gordon Brown was no longer PM during Theresa May’s time in office, perhaps, but that’s startlingly uninformed rather that stupid. Someone once opined that we should do away with criminal trials, unless there was any doubt, in which case we should have a trial springs to mind. But equating the UK with living under Putin’s rule probably beats it.

Sadly, they do, indeed, live amongst us.

It's amazing how stupid some people can be when they spend their time listening to lunatics on tik-tok, instagram, etc., rather than actually doing their own research, or even just listening to mainstream media rather than weirdos peddling conspiracy stories.

Indeed, but a conscripted army looks very different to one that consists of people who have chosen to join, are motivated to be soldiers (or whatever) and undergone assessment for their suitability. I'm not saying it might not be the making of some or that many could attempt to rise to the challenge. I'm just saying that for a wide variety of reasons the thought of a conscripted armed services fills.me.with horror for them and for rhe country.

SharonEllis · 27/01/2024 09:34

@Wisenotboring oh I'm not in favour of conscription as such - its brutal. And a rapidly drafted army wont be as well trained as a professional one but if this thread is anything to go by we may, as a country, need some sense knocking into us. Its the ultimate luxury belief to expect someone else & someone else's children to protect your freedom.

WinterMorn · 27/01/2024 10:12

Can people please stop saying THE Ukraine? It’s Ukraine. THE Ukraine is the Russian styling.

maeveiscurious · 27/01/2024 10:29

No one ever wants a war, nobody wants them or their family to serve.

My Great grandfather was conscripted in 1915 to the Somme. He was 42. He was fortunate to survive.

This will not be just young people or men.

This is not going to be a "rich man's or politicians war" this is going to be about our sovereignty.

We entered WWI and WWII to protect our country, nationality and freedoms. I am so proud of what previous generations have done.

Scarlet99 · 27/01/2024 11:20

Terrrence · 25/01/2024 19:32

They can fuck off if they think my children are fighting in any land war. I don't think anybody else's children should either. I would rather Russia just took over than a generation were sacrificed to prevent it.

Are you serious? You think your country being taken over by Russia would make your children safe from conscription in the future? Not only that but if you dared to complain in that scenario you would probably "disappear" never to be seen again. I don't think you've thought this through have you?

Megifer · 27/01/2024 11:24

Will there be flexibility in the hours fought and fight from home opportunities?

Potkettlepea · 27/01/2024 12:00

Just ask yourself this question, why would Putin even want to invade Europe?

We have no natural resources they need whatsoever, our cities are dumps, their is nothing Europe has that Russia doesn't.

It is the NATO/Globalist alliance that wants to attack Russia!

Putin may well wish to stop UK and Europe providing aid, military support and weapons to the Ukraine, so it's easily foreseeable that they may wish to send missiles to strategic military bases to stop the support and send a message to the West to stop supporting the Ukraine.

We just found the Russian propagandist.

Ukrainian wheat feeds the world. Russia is provably stealing it. Most land can be settled and crops grown.

NATO didn't attack Russia. Ukraine wants to join NATO and Russia doesn't respect its sovereignty so invades to stop it. Russia invading Ukraine is like if the British invaded Ireland tomorrow: a shameful assault upon the sovereignty of a former colony.

Read up about the Holomodor. Ukrainians know what Russia will do to them so they fight for their lives.

Why would you want to post that? Why even think it? NO IT IS NOT. It is The Ukraine, just like we say The US. It has always been The Ukraine; also The Crimea. It may be something to do with the consonants which follow the 'U', We also say The UK. I like to think that the 'The' goes back to the Crimean War and before. Certainly it gave the Ukraine the prestige it deserved after the suffering in WW2.
