Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

Like others have said and I said on the recent deleted thread about this, it is an election year so they are trying to stir up the public and make defence spending an election issue for both parties. There are no doubt concerns about the Anti-NATO Trump getting back into power in the US and even a Labour government here. Its all about the money, it always is.

TBF - we have a problem recruiting for the Forces at the moment.

I wonder how the army do it during strikes when it's not that big.
The Navy doesn't have many ships
The RAF has about 200 combat aircraft

I’d happily skip off to jail before I’d let them take my children. I won’t be alone in that. They can’t jail us all.

they're not going to want to take 5 year olds though, are they?
if your kids are old enough to be conscripted then they are old enough to decide to go/not go on their own. Any 'punishment' that will happen if someone refuses conscription would be for them, not their mummy, so it would be your children in jail rather than you.

Not that I think it will ever happen unless WE are literally at war (i.e someone literally invades us, not us supporting another country like Ukraine) in which case I'd like to think most people would be prepared to do something rather than just role over and surrender. Even then they'd call up army reservists, volunteers etc first. Your average untrained overweight 40 year old call centre worker is going to be of minimum use in a combat situation.

Or are people saying they'd literally rather be under russian/chinese/korean rule as long as your family stay together?

My boys will not be spilling blood for a government that would otherwise watch them starve.

Please just be mindful of all the scaremongering that happened with covid. We are weak if in a constant state of fear.

Would Putin's government be any better?

That said, Russia can't even beat Ukraine. NATO in it's current form would absolutely smash Russia without any extra conscription.

You can’t even get someone’s pronouns wrong these days without a huge outcry so I doubt this is going to happen!!

😂

Naptrappedmummy · 25/01/2024 22:04

They can’t MAKE anyone fight. What are they going to do? Tie people up and drag them kicking and screaming? In previous wars they imprisoned those who refused to go to war and neighbours looked down on those who wouldn’t “support the war effort.”

Do you remember a little thing called covid..? And the effect that had on public compliance?

Justpontificating · 25/01/2024 22:02

At the time of ww2 most Irish Catholics ( ps my parents are Irish) supported Germany.
Not because they supported the Germans they were just not going to support the British, anything was better than that.

So Ireland wasn’t seen as an enemy by Germany.

I don't think that if Russia occupied mainland UK - that going to Ireland will help in any way whatsoever.

I don't think that if Germany had occupied mainland UK, then living in Ireland with the Third Reich next door would be a good experience.

I don't recall Keir Starmer's plane being forced to land and him being sent to a penal colony.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-66408444

Lol Kier Starmer is not political opposition.
He is cut from the same cloth as our current [totally democratically elected] PM.

BurkeWalter · 25/01/2024 22:06

what if it was ET, would everyone go nope, not my issue ?

FMLWTF · 25/01/2024 22:06

Would born-male transwomen have to fight on the front line? Or could one identify out of it?

Would newly-arrived immigrants be conscripted, or just people with citizenship?

Things that didn’t have to be considered last time.

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 25/01/2024 22:07

If Russia invaded and we all rolled over and let them what do people think would happen to their sons then?

They'd be sent off to the front line fighting which ever country Russia decided to invade next

And if they refused they'd likely be shot

spicedlemonpie · 25/01/2024 22:07

Just read that we could have war in the next 20 years.
But i think its gonna be in the next 3 years if not sooner.
Owell it gonna happen its gonna happen something new to look at .

WinterMorn · 25/01/2024 22:07

cerisepanther73 · 25/01/2024 21:56

No chance would i allow my son willing to fight in the name of this country
I would be doing whatever is humanely to discourage him

especially after the Windrush scandal in more recent times ect,

I come from ethnic heritage background

If it came to it, nobody is going to ask if you allow it or not. It will have nothing to do with you, as your son would be of age if he was eligible for conscription.

Naptrappedmummy · 25/01/2024 22:07

Willyoujustbequiet · 25/01/2024 21:55

What would they do...shoot them?

Of course they can refuse. There could be possible consequences but none of which would be life threatening.

They don't have enough prison places as it is. It's a non starter.

So they all refuse. What then?

Every single fucking time

Random2243 · 25/01/2024 22:08

Pretty sure many lads in Ukraine thought the same - it’s all well and good until the enemy is outside your front door. It’s war, you fight or you die.

maeveiscurious · 25/01/2024 22:08

Some of you probably don't know anyone who has a living memory of going to war. A few older family generations went to fight for our freedoms and our nation which we all take for granted. They all came back very different and proud.

I think if our Nationhood was challenged, you wouldn't be fighting for a political party it would be for our basic freedoms and our way of life.

Would no one on this thread take up arms for your town or city, as I think I would. We are all reaping the benefits of WWI and WWII.

It doesn't work. The M>F transes tried that in Ukraine and they weren't having it.
Same with the immigrants, they just got stopped at the border and told they had to join.

They won’t believe you. They think if everyone just refused to fight the threat would be over. Stunningly naive!

PixellatedPixie · 25/01/2024 22:09

I have a very close family member involved in defence and he says it would never be a ground war in the way the Ukraine war is because firstly, we are an island so invasion would be via air raids of some sort for which our defence is now very automated and not about troops on the ground or via sea and the same is true for that too.

Adhdeeedout · 25/01/2024 22:09

They said this when I was a teen with the first gulf war - it’s a plot designed to get us to back any action we take. Times are bad and living is hard for millions so let’s distract the population with the threat of war and the threat of sending their children to their deaths to get them to comply with whatever we do.

Any mass war will be undertaken in different ways to the first world wars. They’ll not attack with guns and swords they’ll do it with computers. Attack infrastructure… hell, even turn the population and government against each other with news and social media.

If it gets so bad we need a violence that cannot be conducted in planes or drones the big red button will be pushed by everyone involved.

what we ought to be doing is preaching the virtues of pacifism to the gammons who think fighting for a country is some kind of honour.

Drosera · 25/01/2024 22:10

Terrrence · 25/01/2024 19:32

They can fuck off if they think my children are fighting in any land war. I don't think anybody else's children should either. I would rather Russia just took over than a generation were sacrificed to prevent it.

I'd rather fight on the frontlines myself than be governed by Putin, and I mean that. I think we've no idea of what it's like to live under a dictatorship and have become pretty soft in many ways.

The Tories and even Trump are likely angels by comparison. We don't want a government where you go missing in the night never to be seen again if you dare criticise the ruling party.

HollyKnight · 25/01/2024 22:10

I applied to join the army nearly 30 years ago. Back then they were even warning us that they expect a war with Russia at some point, so we need to be aware of that before we join. There have been a number of wards since then. None of them were Russia.

Russia knows how to make enough noise to spook the Brits.

It couldn’t be too difficult to go and live in Thailand? As long as you have the money!

Willyoujustbequiet · Today 21:47

I couldn't care about being called a coward if my loved ones stayed alive.

It would be men and women and yes their choice. I'd imagine huge numbers would refuse.

You are right!

I seriously doubt anyone would call anyone else a coward for not choosing to go and have their head blown off!

It’s not natural to kill people is it? Soldiers are trained (brainwashed) to do it and that’s why so many have PTSD. Trained to kill them go back to normal life. Doesn’t work.
