Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

Nobody on this thread can say if they would or wouldn’t be but it’s very unlikely. Women would be expected to engage in the war effort but as infantry they would be massively ineffective and a distraction. Do you mean in the British army? I think at present we have a grand total of 50 odd women in the infantry, so ‘women fight in the infantry’ is stretching it a bit.

A bit inconsistent aren't you? On the one hand, pages back, along with your DP mocking and belittling Generation Z, you must be a Millennial if you have a baby, not really known for their robustness, the self help generation aren't they (if we are resorting to mocking generations and silly stereotypes) and so suggesting their ineptness but still want them to be ready to fight for your freedom, be ready whatever but on the other hand not believing women should fight, surely women would have to fight in your scenario as by that point it would be a very desperate situation indeed!

Naptrappedmummy · 25/01/2024 21:40

They would be kept in line by their reporting officer. They wouldn’t be handed a weapon and allowed to use it as they pleased.

Cos that worked so well for the women of Berlin. The Red Army were just too disciplined to hurt them.

God the stupidity of some people

Don’t be fooled by Ukraine pretending to be innocent. I’m no fan of Russia but Zelenskyy is fooling you all.

Take it elsewhere!

Cheshiresun · 25/01/2024 21:43

Also those saying my son/daughter won't be going. How do you get any say in it anyway! 18 plus is an adult. It's not up to you.

Thatladdo · 25/01/2024 21:43

tiredmama23 · 25/01/2024 21:38

@Naptrappedmummy
My point was about male prisoners being released, particularly those who are an ongoing risk of violent or sexual offending against women. And then being handed a weapon. I just don't think that's a justifiable risk to take, war or not.

Do you think potential occupiers might treat you better???

No one wants to be called a coward for the rest of their lives, plus its NOT the mothers choice, thats just laughable.
They would be young men, it would be their choice.
There was a reason women cried as men marched to war and it wasnt because they wanted them to go.

Sorry but I read that twice and still have no idea what you’re on about.

Justpontificating · 25/01/2024 21:29

In ww2 low level prisoners could join up to avoid prison and some prisoners were offered early release if they joined up.
Prisoners are considered unreliable and as such they would not just be sent to war en masse.

Not RTFT, but the Russians have accepted convicts and former convicts into their army in this war, with the promise that their criminal records will be purged after their service.

Needsomebloodyperspective · 25/01/2024 21:09

@Mulhollandmagoo would love your dad to speak to my autistic daughter I can’t get through to her. Have been on phone with adult mental health her anxiety is rocketing.

Bless her 😔 and you! It must be really tough, she won't be able.to see the wood for the trees right now, I know how she feels, I have OCD and I catastrophise horrifically, which is why I went to see my dad, but I've had a really really rough few days.

What helped me was him essentially giving me bullet points as to why it's unlikely to happen,

  • Untrained people in the military will be more of a hindrance than a help, if needed, the army would.br more likely to launch a big recruitment campaign and train soldiers properly. There is also the TA and the army reserves, plus advanced cadets who would be called up first to fill any voids.
  • The UK armed forces will be part of NATO, so we are a small part of a larger army, and we have big players on our team (USA for one)
  • Russia are weak, really weak. Ukraine were much stronger than Russia imagined, had they ploughed through Ukraine easily they would be difficult to beat, but they have taken a hit financially, they have no support from other countries, a lot of their men have died or are injured, a lot of their weapons have been taken or damaged. Even Putin is clever enough to know that trying to invade anywhere else right now is silly.
  • The gent who made the comment has much to gain from saying this, he has a book out so he is getting a huge amount of publicity from this.
  • The media now hugely rely on 'clicks' for money, printed journalism is a dying art, so they know they need punch headlines to get people interested, so they will be hamming things up to get people to click on their articles, and the actual article will be a damp squib compared to the headline, but often people don't read the full thing. Sadly, this is really anxiety inducing for people like your daughter, but it's worth trying to explain to her that the media/news corporations have a huge ulterior motive to 'reporting' these things - especially in an election year, left leaning outlets will be using this to trash the current government.

If possible, try and mange her internet/ screen access, her ASD will cause her to look for information which will be feeding her anxiety. Good luck and big hugs to you both 💐

Justpontificating · 25/01/2024 21:44

Naptrappedmummy · 25/01/2024 21:37

They ‘can’ but I don’t think it would happen. Many of them would become pregnant, the men would fight over who gets to sleep with them. It would ruin morale.

I wouldn’t be surprised if many would deliberately get pregnant to avoid active service
I also wouldn’t be surprised if things changed and women weren’t called up a lot of men would declare they were women.

As they and Germany did in the last war

I couldn't care about being called a coward if my loved ones stayed alive.

It would be men and women and yes their choice. I'd imagine huge numbers would refuse.

They wouldn’t be allowed to refuse. Conscription isn’t optional.

You might not care, your sons would.

UnderratedGenius · 25/01/2024 21:50

If you won’t let your sons fight an invading army, don’t complain if those invaders rape your daughters.

Read up on what has happened in Ukraine.

tiredmama23 · 25/01/2024 21:51

@Thatladdo

Literally no idea why you're quoting my comment and ranting about it not being a mothers choice? That has zero relevance to the point I actually made, which was about prisoners being released on masse to fight.

Sexual offending against women.

Blah12345678999 · 25/01/2024 21:52

I think there would be a massive revolution if this happened or a mass exodus of ppl, thankfully I have an EU passport although we’re all eligible to live in Ireland (if British citizen), that’s Tory Britain for you, but I bet people will still vote for them!

tiredmama23 · 25/01/2024 21:53

@Thatladdo yes, and? What has that to do with the rant you posted under my comment?

So they would invade through Europe but stop at Ireland?

CoatRack · 25/01/2024 21:53

cakeorwine · 25/01/2024 21:36

How's the political opposition in Russia?

How many have fallen out of windows? Or down the stairs?

I'm not particularly interested in defending Russia, but you are terrifically naive if you don't think we have equal amounts of shenanigans in the West as they have in the not-West.

Also, political opposition etc is a glass house within which the UK is really not in a position to be throwing stones...

Probably tbh

Thatladdo · 25/01/2024 21:54

I cant see the UK being at the point of conscription people without Europe being at the same point or further ahead.

But Ireland would probably keep out, although thats assuming they would let any men leave
