Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

Errrr if the Russians attack, we wouldn’t have a choice as a country but to fight back. To say we would surrender straight away is very naive.

As others have said, we’d be redeployed based on existing skill sets for the war effort…. Only those with sufficient fitness levels/ skills would be sent as boots on the ground - plenty of people would want to fight, don’t worry. There would be a long queue.

What Ive learned from this thread is that Russia is a great place to live.

Fabulous

What ive learned is there are a lot of young minds in this world.
My only 2 children are in the army their choice.
But my god some on here think they cant be touched.

@Naptrappedmummy

It's not stretching anything, women do fight in the infantry.🤷‍♀️ the number is irrelevant - the statement is still a factually correct one.

But if only a tiny percentage of women in the army want to and can serve in the infantry, how many of us in the wider public would be able to do it do you think?

Justpontificating · 25/01/2024 21:35

Naptrappedmummy · 25/01/2024 21:29

Nobody on this thread can say if they would or wouldn’t be but it’s very unlikely. Women would be expected to engage in the war effort but as infantry they would be massively ineffective and a distraction. Do you mean in the British army? I think at present we have a grand total of 50 odd women in the infantry, so ‘women fight in the infantry’ is stretching it a bit.

It’s military policy
Of course policy can change but if it did to exclude women they would also have to consider a case for excluding men. As bizarre as it all sounds

As it stands they can equally fight on the front line with men

This made me laugh too

Did you know that Russia has a higher adult literacy rate than the UK?

How's the political opposition in Russia?

How many have fallen out of windows? Or down the stairs?

For those saying "my sons won't be fighting", if it came down to it, they just would. They would be forced to. Its likely that if it got to that stage, public opinion would be completely different and most would volunteer given the dire situation.

I agree that opinion would change in different circumstances and there would be a lot of pressure and propaganda as well.

But i dont think people were happy about it last time either. Its an unpleasant thing to be asked to do. Im sure there were lots of very anxious mums.

allmyliesaretrue · 25/01/2024 21:37

I'm not worried about it because I have plenty of real, actual things to worry about rather than worry about something that currently isn't happening, and may never happen.

They ‘can’ but I don’t think it would happen. Many of them would become pregnant, the men would fight over who gets to sleep with them. It would ruin morale.

A flash of humour on a serious thread 🙂

tiredmama23 · 25/01/2024 21:38

@Naptrappedmummy
My point was about male prisoners being released, particularly those who are an ongoing risk of violent or sexual offending against women. And then being handed a weapon. I just don't think that's a justifiable risk to take, war or not.

Goditswindy · 25/01/2024 21:38

I hate all the sneering 'youth of today' type posts on here and in general. When Russia first invaded Ukraine my 20 year old was adamant he was going to go and fight. He didn't but his first reaction was to help protect Ukraine, I'd put money on it that he'd be first in line to fight for his country now (hoping to God it doesn't come to that obviously).

Stop pigeonholing and sneering at young people please.

What an absolutely ridiculous and insensitive thing to say. probably the only reason you can even make such silly comments is because WW2 and WW1. I'm sure the thousands of families who lost loved ones would be very interested in your thought on the matter.

I lost a grandfather in WW2. After seeing how my grandmother and father ended up being treated they would be first in line to tell this Government where to stick it.

It’s perfectly reasonable. People would be equally outraged if they languished in prison whilst non convicted men were sent to fight.

@Needsomebloodyperspective have a listen to this and see if you think it might calm her down as it contextualises it a bit: podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-news-agents/id1640878689?i=1000642934449

They would be kept in line by their reporting officer. They wouldn’t be handed a weapon and allowed to use it as they pleased.

Daisydoor12 · 25/01/2024 21:40

Haven’t read the whole thread so apologies if already mentioned but as we now live in a society where girls are encouraged to do what boys do and vice versa why are people commenting with things like “my boys won’t fight/wouldn’t let them fight”, surely it wouldn’t just be boys, girls would be included too. Girls can join the army etc so IF a conscription was required ALL fit people of a certain age should be called.

RadFs · 25/01/2024 21:40

Don’t be fooled by Ukraine pretending to be innocent. I’m no fan of Russia but Zelenskyy is fooling you all.

The "lions led by donkeys" myth was exploded long ago by historians fyi
