I suspect those with their 100k+ savings are boomers or people who have came from wealthy well off families that had a stepping stone and some inheritance thrown in that us normal folk wont get.

My grandad has left ALL his inheritance to my mum (thats his choice). She has a 350k house paid off and lots of savings herself. She said she will grace each of is grandkids with £1k when that day comes and the remaining 120k will go to her.

Don’t talk nonsense. Some people just earn more and save hard 🙄

Sorry, didn’t realise the OP was only asking for genuine poverty stories with the very open question ‘how skint are you?’
🙄

Usually those sort of threads are about how you felt when you were at your most poor and not because you have spunked all your money on a holiday. Thought it was obvious?

Nope, I'm not a boomer ( gen x) and mum and dad still alive and kicking. I've not had a penny from them. Dh parents have been dead for years and there was no inheritance.
I'm in a local authority job on around £32k and dh is a sales rep.
We've had some tough years where I couldn't see a way out of debt.
However, we've turned it around.
Not everyone is going to get an inheritance or have wealthy families.

Nope i grew up on a massive council estate, was a teen mum, am gen X, DH was a labourer, we both went to university as mature students. No help with buying a home or childcare.
I have had some really tough years, I remember walking three miles each way to save £1 on the price of nappies, then feeling so faint with hunger I didn’t think I’d make it back so I was gutted to have to buy a snickers bar.

Hmm1234 · 22/01/2024 16:04

So skint I had to ask my mother to top up my bank balance to be able to catch the bus to do the nursery drop off

Oh boy 😔

SisterSabotage · 22/01/2024 17:26

It wasn't spelled out but most people can read a room, so to speak. I guess you're not one of them.

@NewYear24 @notacooldad

Why did you type out the same thing in 2 different names? How weird.

Sounds like you’re the one who needs a holiday pal! Chill out, it’s only the internet. x

I gave no idea what you are talking about. How weird.

LadyWhistledownsPen · 22/01/2024 17:51

Absolutely zero, buttkiss, nada, zilch until payday on the 31st. I haven't been paid since 21st December. I loathe January for this reason.

Are you paying?

RazzleDazzleEm · 22/01/2024 18:34

@Princesspollyyy

Save in very small increments and to start in 2 pounds or 10 a week.

Have savings for Christmas, birthday and so on to start.

Every penny should be assigned to something on pay day.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/01/2024 18:45

@ticatacatoes we have a similar situation and have been paying back a lot of tax plus the fact we moved abroad and then had to come back for various family reasons and had to borrow to do so- on paper we should be loaded but we just aren't - we are ok but don't have thousands spare every month due to paying down

notacooldad · 22/01/2024 18:50

How weird you cant tell the difference between two posts. I didn't grow up on a council estate, I wasn't' a teen mum and my DH wasn't a labourer.
However what it does show it that it is possible to turn your life around and that not everyone has an inheritance or wealthy families.

( I'm sure you can ask MN to verify that two posters have contributed and that one of us is not a sock puppet)

TheFluffiestCat · 22/01/2024 19:16

Long term/big picture not skint. Mortgage nearly paid, got nest egg from inheritance for emergencies. Short term skint - overdrawn and put £500 vet bill in credit card. Usable savings earmarked for work-related costs (self-employed). Need to get back to the version of myself that budgeted really well.

WithACatLikeTread · 22/01/2024 09:55

She has savings. Doubt she would be getting anything from a food bank. 🙄

But if she explains that she’s had to shell out £15k on a holiday and needs another one in February surely they will help? I mean, they can’t be so cruel as to let her dip into savings or only take 1 trip can they????

GogoGobo · 22/01/2024 19:27

SideshowAuntSallyx · 22/01/2024 10:20

I really hope you've quoted the wrong post(or being sarcastic) as foodbanks are not for those who are short because they've put a deposit on a 15k holiday and want to go on another and have savings they don't want to touch.

Bit of sarcasm. Assumed they were being sarcastic too, but watching how this thread has become full with last of the big savers, I don’t think she was being sarcastic ….

But you’re alluding to “hanging on for payday” as you don’t have much “play” money left. With £15k holiday booked, well paid 2 income household and savings, you’re not skint at all. Not by any definition.

As I’ve said several times on this thread, skint to me is very different to poor. Skint is ‘let’s go for dinner after payday, I’m a bit skint this week!’. Poor is something very different. Several people said they agree with me. Several people have said they disagree. It’s an interesting thread to read because of the difference of opinions and the different circumstances. I don’t know what you’re trying to achieve really by beating the same old drum.

SpeedyDrama · 22/01/2024 19:38

I’ve 3 figure amounts in both current and savings account so nowhere near the acceptable MN standard but also not glib enough to say I’m skint. About £150 to pay off on the credit card from December. A few bits on credit here and there.

However I have been there. I remember the time of eating nothing but dry bread with turned cheese and crying when I randomly found a £5 note in an old wallet.

Due to personal circumstances, my finances could change at any moment for the worse but have little ability to currently cement them for the better. It is what it is.

Theyhaveallbeenused2 · 22/01/2024 19:41

Paid on Friday.. son has more money in his piggy bank than I have in my account..have cash left over from a Christmas gift but don't want to spend on everyday things.

Raspberrymoon49 · 22/01/2024 20:08

Pennies till Friday payday

OptimisticMermaid · 22/01/2024 22:39

Sorry I wasn’t meaning to boast about not being skint. Life is a bit crap in most other areas and I was very skint growing up but it never really bothered me. It’s relatively easy to deal with having no money when it’s just yourself. I have no experience of being a skint single parent. I empathise.

FrogsWormsandCaterpillars · 22/01/2024 23:14

I’m skint.
17p in the bank, barely any fuel in the car that I need to get to work, praying my ex pays maintenance tomorrow or else I’m not getting to work after tomorrow.
No savings.
on payday I pay the bills, fill up the car and do a big food shop, then I’m counting pennies until the next payday.

ilikeeggs · 23/01/2024 07:43

I’ve got £70 left in the bank but don’t get paid until the 31st. That should be enough for one more food shop though, just hoping I have enough petrol to last until payday.
