Can I remind people who are really down to their last pennies that most councils have reopened their support funds (mine is funds for gas and electric at the moment) and cost of living payment restarts from feb 6th.

Agreed. Also take a look at https://grants-search.turn2us.org.uk/

Lots of charities etc on there. Including one i am a trustee of - and we struggle each year to give away our full budget of grants as we don't get enough applications (we do try raise awareness). Please don't feel afraid to seek help.

Skint £7 in my bank till the 7th feb

Justontherightsideofnormal · 21/01/2024 20:09

No savings. Nothing in my personal bank. Husband has money. Just halved my wage to help out looking after my DGS (which I do not begrudge and DH will be covering my reduction of wages as this was a family decision). Don’t feel skint but I am skink 😂

MissInconsequential · 21/01/2024 20:18

Skint but not.
get paid Tuesday, have about £5 to last until then but bills are all paid and I have food and petrol to last until then. About £8k in debt which I’m slowly paying off.
No savings however I have managed to save about £500 over the last few months (small work bonus and not spending money gifted for Christmas). One of my debts is now paid off and I no longer need to pay for childcare (was about £200-£300 a month) so from now on this is being split between savings pots for emergencies/christmas/birthdays/uniform etc so that I don’t need to touch my slowly increasing savings or impact my budget for the month when money for these things is needed. So determined to sort my finances out this year and manage my money better!

Mumof2NDers · 21/01/2024 20:21

Ooh fab. Thanks for that! It is much cheaper.
Ive decided to bite the bullet and drive otherwise it’s 2 trains then 45 minutes on the bus. 6 hours in total!
We’ll still be staying over 2 nights though I think.

Boydd · 21/01/2024 20:56

-500 overdraft. In the middle of chemo and it’s hit me hard so as I’m self employed had to use all my savings which wasn’t much to get me through. Have applied for benefits but don’t hold out much hope. Cancer sucks as I was finally debt free and now come full circle

Enigma52 · 21/01/2024 21:02

stomachameleon · 20/01/2024 17:32

@Zonnet your 'left over' after all bills is more than what I live on.

Have seven quid in the account until tue.

Same!

This is my fear. Diagnosed with secondary shit BC and really really worry I won't be able to work going forward.
Hope chemo isn't too gruelling for you. What a pile of crap eh? X

Sorry to hear that you are going through cancer treatment - been there, done that and it isn't easy. You should be able to apply for ESA/PIP if you have been self employed but it will mean a longish phone call so gather all your paperwork and a coffee and make the call. Macmillan also do one off payments to help cancer patients so it could be worth applying to them.
Hang in there!! You got this!!

Boydd · 21/01/2024 21:27

@Rainbow1901 thank you so much, I will look into this tomorrow. I was on the verge of stopping treatment as I felt I couldn’t carry on so this advice means more than you know x

Please also look at turn2us (I posted the link up thread), there are likely to be charities that may be able to give you a grant to help.

Minalima · 21/01/2024 21:45

Pretty skint.
£0 savings
£151.23 left in my account which is from the food and house budget which needs to last until the 5th of Feb (me and 3 kids)

I put £500 into food and house budget when I get paid. All the rest goes on rent and bills so it has to do any extras as well like school trips/birthday presents and High school dinner money for my eldest etc. So yeah, it usually dwindles by the end of the month.

But we all have our health, the kids are bright, energetic and happy, the house is warm and I try to make sure we eat pretty well so it could be a lot worse.

Fourcandleforkhandle · 21/01/2024 21:51

I wish I was just skint. But I'm skint and in debt aswell. Currently have;
£300 in current account.
3.5k owed to DS
15k owed to Mum
108k owed on Mortgage.

wellstopdoingitthen · 21/01/2024 22:14

I really want to retire-exhausted but just can't afford it. I'm 61 but state pension is 67 for me. I'm worried that my health will be gone by the time I retire.

Not said that before.

hamsterchump · 21/01/2024 22:20

Icannoteven · 20/01/2024 17:12

-£150 in bank account. Still haven’t paid the childcare bill this month, which will be around £200. £2500 in credit card debt. The only thing I have spent on this month that isn’t necessities are fees for after school activities. It’s just been a bad month for kids growing out of shoes/coats etc. maybe I should feed them less 😂them I would save on shopping and clothes. I’m desperately putting off going to the dentist with 2 bad teeth (and the two I need to replace), so things aren’t great.

I’ll have to ride my bike to work and back this week, I cannot afford the train. I do not enjoy riding in city rush hour traffic in the dark. I hope it isn’t icy.

My partners company seems to be laying people off left right and centre too, so things aren’t looking too positive in that front.

I appreciate the chance for a moan - everyone around me is worse off atm so I have no-one to moan at in real life.

Don't forget your own needs are important too, you should prioritise your teeth over after school activities you don't want to end up with an infection and pain. Your health is just as important as everyone else's in the family.

OptimisticMermaid · 21/01/2024 22:23

No family help or inheritance. I got divorced we sold our house and were equal split. Bought house that has appreciated. Was quite frugal for many years apart from money to my kids. Earn around 40k pa. I think I'm just good at saving.

OverTheGrip · 21/01/2024 22:28

I’m so sorry to read these posts. It’s horrid.

I’ve been skint but never in debt and can remember the worry. To be in debt also must be like digging yourself out of a hole.

Just to agree with Rainbow and to say that a lot of the cancer charity helplines will advise you with benefit applications, how to claim for transport costs etc.

OnTheBoardwalk · 21/01/2024 22:49

Not skint but not flush

i think the problem is, if like me you get paid over a week early in Dec then have to wait out the million January days to get paid out the end of the month. Can’t we swap January and February around?

Nanof8 · 21/01/2024 23:04

I have some debt - too much for my liking- but we have paid off the first mortgage and now working on the 2nd. We didn't buy as much at Christmas this year mostly for the little ones under 16 and our parents. Nieces and nephews got a merry Christmas text. They are all young adults and I couldn't afford things they would like. Some family got photos of events that we did throughout the year. I gifted them photo albums a few years ago. I did attend a financial literacy program just to get motivated to do better this year.

Sleepyallday · 21/01/2024 23:25

Did a big food shop today so should be ok until I get paid on Thursday

Exactly! The question is ‘how skint are you?’ Some people are, some aren’t…everyone who wishes, is allowed to reply surely!

I’m very fortunate in life and for every poster who hasn't been able to resist advertising/boasting about their good fortune there are many many more amongst us who were. And for that I’m thankful. It’s says a lot about them but it also says even more about the crassness of the posters who have mistaken being asked how skint people are with tell us how skint you’re not.
