@Bishopsgirl that's a fantastic effort 👌 how did you manage to clear it?

In another year or so I imagine you'll have a lot saved.

Bishopsgirl · 21/01/2024 13:33

@Nanaof1 I hope everything turns out well for your dh with his results. Coincidentally, we've been in a similar position. My dh had hodgkins lymphoma and then went through tests for prostate cancer, which, thankfully, were negative. During all this he had a psychotic breakdown, he'd just started a new job and, with his illnesses, he was put under immense pressure. He had his contract terminated and because of his behaviour during the psychotic episode, he will never be allowed to work in that field again. I also ended up immediately losing my job due to his psychosis. We already had a small amount of debt, thinking with us both being employed, we could handle it but we had to borrow more money just to live off and basically borrowed from "Peter to pay Paul". We massively downsized and I got a different, lower paying job and we've changed our lifestyles dramatically. I know what it's like to wait for the next disaster, you get so used to things going wrong it becomes a way of life. I really hope things turn out well for you and your dh, stay strong. If you'd told me a few years ago what was going to happen to us I would have thought I'd crumble but it's surprising what you can cope with and how there can be light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck.

@Bishopsgirl Thank you so much for your caring and kind post. You and your DH have really had a time of it these last years. I am sorry you had all that piled on you so quickly. You both have had the determination to make it through what, to many, would be insurmountable difficulties and have come out the other side. I admire you and your DH and wish you both the very best going forward. Unmumsnetty hugs to you both {{HUGS}}.

My husband and I are teachers (early career) and we were skint, living pay cheque to pay cheque with 7.5k in debt.

Now, we're living in the ME teaching. My work-life balance is great and we've paid off our debts and have a small amount of savings. We're not making a ton of money, but we are very comfortable and can save £500 - £1000 between us a month.

Our families are poor and we will not be getting any inheritance so we need to save as much as possible.

PepperIsHere · 22/01/2024 03:57

To be honest, my situation isn't v healthy. $380k owing on mortgage, paying off $3k tax bill in instalments, and about $50 in the bank. I get paid tomorrow though.
The thing is, in my work, the majority of our clients are drowning in debt certainly have no savings and very regularly go without food. By comparison, I live like a queen.

I absolutely hate that we are such a mean society who would rather see people go hungry and homeless rather safe and well.

Ladyof2022 · 22/01/2024 04:41

Not at all.

I’m very fortunate in life and for every poster who hasn't been able to resist advertising/boasting about their good fortune there are many many more amongst us who were. And for that I’m thankful. It’s says a lot about them but it also says even more about the crassness of the posters who have mistaken being asked how skint people are with tell us how skint you’re not.

Then we’ll agree to disagree.

tuvamoodyson · 22/01/2024 04:55

Then we’ll agree to disagree.

I think maybe read the room(or the thread). Yes it's how skint are you but when people are talking about having no money and drowning in debt coming on saying you have £80k in savings and 5k in the bank and two well paid jobs because you live within your means is just a bit insensitive.

There's a time and place for bragging and when people are saying they are truly struggling maybe it isn't the place.

Read that thread that was linked. Nearly all talking about not being able to feed their families or clothe them properly. Shows how selfish people are nowadays to think it means when they have lots of savings but not wanting to use them.

Pipsquiggle · 22/01/2024 07:10

@tuvamoodyson just bore off would you.

Of course everyone on here is in dire straits as they couldn't resist advertising - wow if only we could all have that skill 🙄

Your lack of emotional intelligence and empathy is breathtaking.

GogoGobo · 22/01/2024 09:07

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 20/01/2024 18:24

I’m skint but not poor if that makes sense? I think of skint as being short on disposable income, which I am this month as I’ve booked a long haul holiday for this year in may which is costing us £15k+ so I have that to pay for in the next few months and I am contemplating booking a short haul holiday for Feb because I need a change of scenery.

My ‘play money’ is seriously short after paying for all that, and I spent a bit more in December on gifts for my family because it was Christmas. That December pay feels a loooooooong time ago! I am lucky though as I have lots of savings, and both my partner and I have very well paid jobs. But roll on January pay day.

You sound desperate. Can you get a referral to a food bank? Or is there a family member who can help you?

If only indeed…but then, you have absolutely no idea of my situation! I simply said everyone who wished could reply! Do what I do when people bore me, disengage, which is precisely what I’m going to do with you! ☺️

She has savings. Doubt she would be getting anything from a food bank. 🙄

Good for you, well done.

I believe in calling people out when they are being tone deaf dickheads in the hope that they can reflect and self improve. I feel this may be lost on you.

horseyhorsey17 · 22/01/2024 10:18

About £200 until I get paid on 31st - arrgh. Might have to dip into my overdraft this month, which is annoying.

I really hope you've quoted the wrong post(or being sarcastic) as foodbanks are not for those who are short because they've put a deposit on a 15k holiday and want to go on another and have savings they don't want to touch.

Pr1mr0se · 22/01/2024 10:26

Skint. The last two weeks before payday are terrible. Two days a week in the office - mostly the travel costs for that come out of my overdraft. Some weeks I just say no I can't as I have no money but that doesn't go down well.

GogoGobo · 22/01/2024 11:29

user1492757084 · 20/01/2024 21:09

Yes, quite skint of liquidity.
Business having a bad year, living off borrrowings.
Next year will be better.

Same here. I don’t know whether this is temporary or not! Business is dire, we are servicing high levels of debt. On the surface it looks fine…behind closed doors it’s a mess

Janie45 · 22/01/2024 11:41

got £500 savings but always in my overdraft before the next pay day, have a bit on a credit card, but own house without mortgage

Sorry, didn’t realise the OP was only asking for genuine poverty stories with the very open question ‘how skint are you?’
🙄

Hmm1234 · 22/01/2024 16:04

So skint I had to ask my mother to top up my bank balance to be able to catch the bus to do the nursery drop off

ticatacatoes · 22/01/2024 16:25

@GogoGobo we are exactly the same. Between us we bring home around £6k a month & friends think we have money to spare. I have a friend who is always asking me to go to lunches/spas/weekends away. But we are paying of £21k debt, plus mortgage at £1550pcm and bills around £2k a month. Our debt is personal and I don't want to explain to my friend or anyone in RL. I try to put my friend off as much as possible, when we go shopping (her fav hobby, groan) I buy nothing, she must think its odd. I do lunches/dinner with her but I often cannot afford it/the money is needed elsewhere/I would rather spend the cash on clearing debt and go no where or do anything/as little as I can while we have the debt.

XenoBitch · 22/01/2024 16:26

In the black when I get paid, in the red a week later. No savings, but no debts either.
