I’m both skint and not skint.

We are paying off some debt so whilst currently in the red, two more pay days will see our debts gone and the ability to save a decent amount fairly fast.

DH and I have a good income - we’ve just been bad with money.

ellie09 · 20/01/2024 16:40

I am not in a terrible position, but not the best either.

Bank account has £795 in it until payday on 31st.

Savings has £1.5k in it.

Big month next month with childs birthday, night away in March, holiday to Budapest in April then big summer holiday in June (although we are all inclusive so min costs once there)

I have been in much worse positions but I would definitely want more savings. I am on £35k a year and single parent.

runbackhome · 20/01/2024 16:47

Really skint. I had £20 in cash today to buy food to last us til Wednesday which went about this far ⬅️➡️. family of 4.

No idea how I'm going to get to work next week as no petrol.

We have debt we're working through but wages seem to last about a weekend once direct debits have been taken and a decent food shop has been done.

I'm hoping financial stability happens soon as this is not a fun way to live. I'm working as many hours as I can around school hours and OH has had a bad run of job losses and ill heath which have really set us back over the last few years.

tadpolelove · 20/01/2024 16:51

£22 in my purse
£0 in the bank
£45 in my vinted account (trying not to touch that though because I want to save it up for end of year)

I'm paid on Tuesday 23rd so only a few days away.

Once it comes I've got to take £500 out straight away though to pay money back that I've borrowed.

I've had a holiday and my car mot this month so I've been more expensive than usual 🥹

I made a pledge to be better with money this year and I'm really going to try and save and my gifts in advance in the sales because I always buy last minute and it costs more. I really want to save for next Xmas too, because Xmas just gone was so costly

Sallyingon · 20/01/2024 16:52

Skint. Payday on Friday and I'm on -£50. Have done big shop so will limp through. Do have £4k in savings but dont like to go into thar. February is going to be a lot better. Love the council tax free months.

Zonnet · 20/01/2024 17:01

I expected that there would be lots of incredulous commenters on here with thousands in savings so it’s a nice surprise to see some ‘real’ answers.

Bishopsgirl · 20/01/2024 17:02

Four years ago, due to dramatically life changing circumstances, I ran up 40k of loans. I've now got that down to 4k. I was also £2,850 overdrawn and I've now cleared it. I don't have any savings but would like to get some together soon. I have regular money coming in, pay all bills and can buy food etc but it only takes something like a big car repair bill to put me back in debt again. I'm determined to build up a financial safety net this year somehow.

KimKardassion · 20/01/2024 17:04

Skint because January has 16383838 days in it.

It feels longer! I’m sure the last time I got paid it was in shillings.

This. By the time I get paid at the end of this month it will have been 6.5 weeks since my last pay packet😫

breakfastdinnerandtea · 20/01/2024 17:09

I'm about £800 in my overdraft (hopefully! I haven't actually looked). Payday on Tuesday and I'll be lucky to stay above £1000 after it pays off the overdraft. I'm sick of working this hard to still be in a financial pickle. I don't even overspend, I have few debts.

EarringsandLipstick · 20/01/2024 17:11

Really skint & very stressed (post-divorce, trying to pay costs, and recalibrate costs to find a sustainable way to live. I've a good job, live in an affluent area so no-one would know. I'm fortunate that I may be able to borrow from my mother to address some immediate concerns, an option that many others would not have. I keep telling myself I'll find a solution & more manageable way to live in due course)

I suspect those with their 100k+ savings are boomers or people who have came from wealthy well off families that had a stepping stone and some inheritance thrown in that us normal folk wont get.

My grandad has left ALL his inheritance to my mum (thats his choice). She has a 350k house paid off and lots of savings herself. She said she will grace each of is grandkids with £1k when that day comes and the remaining 120k will go to her.

Not to alarm you but I know a couple of people who got banned from vinted for smallish reasons and they lost their balance in the process - so might be worth withdrawing it just to be safe.

Icannoteven · 20/01/2024 17:12

-£150 in bank account. Still haven’t paid the childcare bill this month, which will be around £200. £2500 in credit card debt. The only thing I have spent on this month that isn’t necessities are fees for after school activities. It’s just been a bad month for kids growing out of shoes/coats etc. maybe I should feed them less 😂them I would save on shopping and clothes. I’m desperately putting off going to the dentist with 2 bad teeth (and the two I need to replace), so things aren’t great.

I’ll have to ride my bike to work and back this week, I cannot afford the train. I do not enjoy riding in city rush hour traffic in the dark. I hope it isn’t icy.

My partners company seems to be laying people off left right and centre too, so things aren’t looking too positive in that front.

I appreciate the chance for a moan - everyone around me is worse off atm so I have no-one to moan at in real life.

I'd love that, re financial safety net. That's also a key problem for me; every time my situation improves a bit, I have some unexpected cost & any small saving is gone. It's hugely stressful. I'm trying to plan for that at the moment.

MrsBrianMay · 20/01/2024 17:12

Do you?! Oh dear!

Not much I can do or say about it at the end of the day! But it would have been nice to see a little more as it'll be the only way in this day and age that I would be EVER to have money for a house deposit.

I suspect a lot are in the same position as I am. An aging population means family inheritance etc is becoming a thing of the past.

By the time I get any significant inheritance, I will likely be close to retirement age.

As horrible as this all sounds.

laclochette · 20/01/2024 17:21

£160 to last me until Friday when I get paid, although that doesn't include money set aside at the start of the month for transport and food, so I should be fine as I've got no social plans between now and then. It's been a very boring month and in general I can't afford to socialise out and about anything like as much as I used to.

I am lucky that I don't have any debt beyond my horrible large mortgage that I try not to think about, and I've got £26k in savings and investments, although £20k of that is locked away so isn't dip-into-able...

But I always have to count my pennies carefully towards the end of the month because I budget so precisely that I get down to my last pound in my current account just before payday, and it never feels great, even though it's part of the plan.

Currently focused on getting my instant access cash savings up to £10k as a proper safety net.

EarringsandLipstick · 20/01/2024 17:24

Mummyofbananas · 20/01/2024 17:24

I have not a penny to my name right now, actually zero, although I do have a full fridge and freezer and petrol in my car. We both earn an ok wage but are behind on debts fom when I was part time/mat leave/lower wages. I've made a budget for this year and should start to be able to save from march so that by next christmas im financially comfortable.

NewYear24 · 20/01/2024 17:25

So one day you may get a nice big inheritance then.

DistressSignal · 20/01/2024 17:26

I think I've got about 27p in my account, nearly maxed out on my credit card... Literally scraping through til I get paid then I have to pay a chunk off my vet bill so Feb looking equally poor...

Mammma91 · 20/01/2024 17:26

£13 in the bank, £17 in my jacket pocket until Friday. I have a £134 refund pending to go back into the bank, I’m hoping it drops in on Monday.
