@EarringsandLipstick Nope, I was answering the question honestly. However I am constantly turning down invitations from friends because I can't afford to go for dinner etc while also saving what is a totally reasonable amount, based on my salary. I'm not moaning about this at all, by the way, but it's just odd that it makes me feel skint (when as you say, I'm not) because so many of my friends seem to have way more disposable income than me, and it does baffle me a bit.

I live in London and it's not just more expensive to do things, but the social expectation seems to be that you will go out for dinner/drinks several times a week etc etc and I honestly don't know how people do it!

Gotsomedebt · 20/01/2024 17:28

Skint. Minus money. Unemployed. Struggling to get employed. Have a loan, a credit card and Overdraft that all need paying off. All of which costs me £££ a Month in Repayments. Plus mortgage and other bills. Can't cope much longer without a job.

Princesspollyyy · 20/01/2024 17:29

I've got £13 in the bank, but I did a food shop today so have a full fridge and freezer. I get paid on Tuesday and my child benefit goes in then too.

Got no debt, but also no savings. I'd like to start saving this year. I've never been very good at it.

Zonnet · 20/01/2024 17:29

This thread has made me realise I have major money anxiety and (MN isn’t always helpful for it I don’t think)

You hear of folk with thousands and thousands saved… like tens of thousands.

We have a few thousand saved, that’s it. Could pay all the bills on DHs income but then we would have no discretionary spends (as in, no days out, no new clothes, no holidays, no Christmas or birthday presents for anyone) so I could never give up work fully or be a SAHM. We both earn about 60/65k put together. Tbh usually we have £1500/1600 a month left over after all bills which I thought was bad but now it seems decent and I can relax a bit.

We're on UC but I do work. We're not as skint as we were this time last year where we stood to lose our house and were up to our eyeballs in debt and getting deeper; we're now able to tread water and although the money runs out before the end of the month, all the bills are paid. Our car broke down before Christmas, meaning I've not been able to get to work and so it's going to be a lot tighter this month than last. We also have to try and find a grand to pay for the repair. Joy and happiness.

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 20/01/2024 17:07

This. By the time I get paid at the end of this month it will have been 6.5 weeks since my last pay packet😫

😫Nooooo

Bothcarers · 20/01/2024 17:32

Totally skint

No savings

UC is gone on bills each month within 48 hours. Other money (PIP , child benefit etc just gone on food and other expenses)

last 2 weeks of each month we use 2 different non referral food banks just to survive

stomachameleon · 20/01/2024 17:32

@Zonnet your 'left over' after all bills is more than what I live on.

Have seven quid in the account until tue.

catelynjane · 20/01/2024 17:32

Not skint but not rich either.

We have around 6k in savings between us and no debt.

Danikm151 · 20/01/2024 17:32

Credit cards maxed. In my overdraft and struggling to get out of it. currently on the bus to aldi with my shopping list calculated to the penny. If prices have gone up again this week then stuff will need to be put back.
dreading April when the bills go up.

Not much I can do or say about it at the end of the day! But it would have been nice to see a little more as it'll be the only way in this day and age that I would be EVER to have money for a house deposit.

I suspect a lot are in the same position as I am. An aging population means family inheritance etc is becoming a thing of the past.

By the time I get any significant inheritance, I will likely be close to retirement age.

As horrible as this all sounds.

It does abit, you can't really rely on inheritance.

That must be tough. Thank you for keeping me from being irrational. So many people have so little and it’s wrong with how expensive stuff is getting x

Mumof2NDers · 20/01/2024 17:34

I have £3:01 in my account.£0 savings.
I get paid on the £25th so I’m hoping the petrol I have will be enough to get me to work and back. February was looking like it might be ok but DS2 (who has applied to join the army) has been invited to Catterick to train with them for a day. We live a fair way from there and I’ve lost my confidence doing long drives lately. So we’re looking at train travel and 2 nights in a hotel. Could do without it really but it’s important to him and will hopefully go in his favour during the recruitment process.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 20/01/2024 17:36

Skint and not skint. Skint in actual accessible disposable cash, about £400 until payday. But we have a small mortgage, no debt and longer term savings linked to our business, and the business pays our fuel and a few other costs too.

Friendofdennis · 20/01/2024 17:36

Trying to stick to a budget have £209 in account til payday on Friday but only going to use £20 of that for food as that is what is left from the food budget for the week. Luckily have lots of food left in the freezer from the big Christmas shop.

Thepeopleversuswork · 20/01/2024 17:36

Skint but not skint. I’m lucky enough that I own two properties which makes me extremely fortunate and I will have a rental income soon but until this comes on stream I’m completely hand to mouth. It feels uncomfortable at the moment but first world problems and all that.

BouleDeSuif · 20/01/2024 17:37

£190 in savings
£201 in current account, to last until 2nd Feb
£3 in my purse
£11.50 in my Vinted account.

IDontHateRainbows · 20/01/2024 17:39

I've got less than £100 in the bank and no payday this month due to being in between jobs although I do get a JSA payment of £164 next week.

I sell cosmetics on ebay just for pin money so hopefully will get some sales this weekend as I'm away visiting a friend this weekend which is a bad time to be skint, but I need to make use of the free time whilst not working.

haysfam9 · 20/01/2024 17:40

98p in account and payday on weds. No savings either.
Enough petrol to last until then and probably enough freezer food to make into something resembling meals.

AlltheFs · 20/01/2024 17:42

We have lots of assets but fuck all cash.

All bills paid but -£600 in account and £8k credit cards (0%).

House equity of circa £500k and £12k emergency fund so I don’t need a tiny violin.

Cause is childcare costs and an old horse that costs the earth. But neither is forever.

NewYear24 · 20/01/2024 17:42

Would selling one of your properties help?

Thomission · 20/01/2024 17:44

£200 in my current account
£1500 on my credit card
£8k in savings
£175k in my business account

Friendofdennis · 20/01/2024 17:47

Good luck to all of you waiting for pay day on a tight budget. That dread when something goes wrong and uses up your last ££ is something I’m familiar with

Dabralor · 20/01/2024 17:48

We are technically ok because our combined salary is 90k and we have savings.
However, month to month we are absolutely haemorrhaging cash. There is nothing left by the end, and this month the car repairs, broken boiler, extra childminder bill and roof repairs from Henk mean that we are overdrawn and pretty much living from stuff in the freezer. And we got a surprise £500 bill off EDF two days before Christmas. Thankfully they've let us spread that but added 200 a month on to our direct debit.

I blame this wholeheartedly on Liz effing Truss - our mortgage went up £600 a month because of her 🤬

I never thought it could be like this when we both work flat out. There seems no end in sight. We can't come with all these increments in the hundreds we are having to fork out, we lie awake at night worrying about whether to sell the house and completely downsize.

Auntieobem · 20/01/2024 17:50

Not skint. About £7k in account, about £80k in savings, pay day next week. No inheritance, but 2 good pay packets and live well within our salaries (haven't had a holiday in years, mortgage under £1k, have just got a new car though.)
