To go to the shop with Covid?

My friend has Covid. Feeling crap but not at death’s door if you know what I mean.
I text her today to check and see how she was and if she needed anything. She said she didn’t as she was just back from the shops and got all she needed.
I said “should you be out with Covid” and she got really annoyed and said it isn’t the way it used to be and you can go out without a mask even though you are testing positive.
I didn’t want to cause an argument so I just said “ I don’t think you can” and left it like that. She is now bombarding my phone with links and all sorts trying to prove it is ok. I could have gone to get her anything she needed. She insists life goes on as normal and nobody needs to stay home.
AIBU thinking it is incredibly selfish to do this?

She is correct there is no restriction any more.

But the guidance remains to 'try to stay at home'.

Legally she is right. Not morally tho.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 20/01/2024 15:27

You are no longer obliged to isolate with COVID. I would still try to stay away from people though. I try to stay away from people with any illness. I don't think it's polite to spread my germs everywhere. I don't think I'd comment on someone else going to the shops with it.

LittleBearPad · 20/01/2024 15:28

You’re wrong. If she feels crap she should try to avoid people but she doesn’t have to.

Do you insist people with flu or a cold isolate themselves at home?

This will cause someone to rant it’s not a cold - thing is, for most people it is. And flu/cold can be equally dangerous to people who are vulnerable.

Usernamechange1234 · 20/01/2024 15:28

She’s right on the restrictions but they do advise stay at home… I had it recently and stayed at home because it just felt like the right thing (morally) to do. Although tbf I didn’t have to go out, I had lots of support.

It’s not something I’d argue with anyone about though, each to their own.

Bladwdoda · 20/01/2024 15:29

Why is this always covid specific. Shouldn’t people always try to stay at home if they have any Illness they could pass on?

I’ve no big opinion on it, and I could imagine I would go to the shop if I felt well and needed shopping. I would avoid it though if possible.

Sparklyhat · 20/01/2024 15:29

Of course she can go to she shop, go to work etc with covid, just as you would if you had a cold and felt well enough to do so

Homelessnottoothless · 20/01/2024 15:30

I had no idea you could still go out. Is it different in Ireland?

Work wouldn’t let her in with Covid.

I mean if she's going to go out and go about her day regardless then why bother actually testing?

Edited

I refuse to argue with her over it. I just made a comment because the guidelines here say you have to stay home.

Legally she's right. But I work in a shop and in the last month we've had 3 colleagues all working with COVID and two of them looked like they were at deaths door. I have to say I felt very uncomfortable and at risk but just got told "it's only a cold and it's everywhere" yes I'll remember that if it kills my vulnerable DH.

Work pays her if she has a positive test so she has 5 days off.

Sooooo true ! Smile

niknac1 · 20/01/2024 15:35

In the nhs they say if you feel well enough you can go to work, I think if you work with vulnerable cancer patients you stay off.

TheChosenTwo · 20/01/2024 15:36

I’m with your friend. Life goes on as normal. Although I’d like to think if I had it and needed to go to the shops I’d wear a mask, the reality is I don’t think we have any anymore so I’d just go without and keep my distance as much as possible.
But ultimately I think yabu.

In this case it’s Covid but I have had worse flu than Covid in fairness. I wouldn’t go to the shops with it.

She's absolutely right and how it always should have been. Don't do unnecessary social things, don't go and see granny, but if you're well enough carry on as normal, just as you would with any other illness.

Homelessnottoothless · 20/01/2024 15:38

I am fully prepared to accept I am being unreasonable. I just though going shopping with Covid and refusing to wear a mask was a bit selfish.

Awful. I hope she one day realises how much harm she may have caused. I'd lose that 'friend'.

Maddy70 · 20/01/2024 15:42

Lehally she's correct moral not. I'm immunosuppressed a d while i appreciate that i cant dictate what others do . Their actions could make me seriously ill or worse. At least they should wear a mask imo if they know they have covid or flu like they do in asian countries

SideshowAuntSallyx · 20/01/2024 15:44

Does anyone actually test anymore?

I only tested last year as I had a spare test left over (was due to go abroad and was curious) but I wouldn't think "oh I must test in case its covid" in general. I'd just think I'm feeling shit and feel sorry for myself like I did when I had pneumonia last year.

2dogsandabudgie · 20/01/2024 15:44

I had covid in December and had to collect a prescription. I wore a mask as I just thought it was the right thing to do and tried to stay away from friends and family. It's still a viral infection that we don't know what the long term effects are especially if you catch it numerous times. We could be storing up problems for our future health.

Homelessnottoothless · 20/01/2024 15:31

Work wouldn’t let her in with Covid.

What work? I work in a school and we are expected in. That’s the same for most places. Unless you’re too ill to work you work. There aren’t requirements to test so how would you even know.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 20/01/2024 15:47

Flu or a bad cold could cause someone immunocompromised to get seriously ill. Before 4 years ago, there'd be no question about going out if you felt well enough to be out, despite this.

Most people don't even test any more. They'll have what feels like a mild cold and go out and could well be Covid positive. We can't just stop because of a minor sniffle and a cough despite this.
