To go to the shop with Covid?

My friend has Covid. Feeling crap but not at death’s door if you know what I mean.
I text her today to check and see how she was and if she needed anything. She said she didn’t as she was just back from the shops and got all she needed.
I said “should you be out with Covid” and she got really annoyed and said it isn’t the way it used to be and you can go out without a mask even though you are testing positive.
I didn’t want to cause an argument so I just said “ I don’t think you can” and left it like that. She is now bombarding my phone with links and all sorts trying to prove it is ok. I could have gone to get her anything she needed. She insists life goes on as normal and nobody needs to stay home.
AIBU thinking it is incredibly selfish to do this?

I don't think you are judging too harshly.
If you are ill do everything in your power to stay at home, whether that is covid, the flu or a cold.
Look at the increase in measles that is going on now.

Nope.

I think a number of people on this thread are confusing a couple of things, probably because the word “rules” was used to mean about 200 concepts by the media during the pandemic.

What you have posted from Ireland is actually health guidance - there is no legal requirement to stay inside as there are no current Covid-19 restrictions in the UK or Ireland. You’ll note they say “need” and “should”, rather than “must” - if it was the law, the language would be stronger and more imperative.

Sometimes people need to go out, though.

I went out when I had Covid. I needed important medication and don’t have anyone who can run errands for me.

Going into a pharmacy (where there are likely to be vulnerable people) is one of the most stupid and thoughtless things that someone with covid could do! They're just going to spread it to the staff and other customers!

It's where my ECV husband caught it when he was collecting his chemotherapy drugs and it nearly killed him. He'd not been out anywhere else and we were shielding so I was working from home and hadn't been out or mixed with people either. The rules meant he had to collect his chemo drugs in person because one was a controlled drug that they wouldn't issue to anyone else - it was either patient collect or had to be handed over by one of the cancer nurses! He said a couple of customers were coughing their heads off in the pharmacy whilst waiting for their prescriptions!!

IndignantIguana · 20/01/2024 16:09

All the people I know that work in customer service jobs for bug chain stores now have to go in even if they have covid regardless unless they are really really ill. My husbands work go one further, not only do you have to go in but they don't offer sick pay.

Legally she is right. Not morally tho.

I agree completely. I had Covid quite badly just after Christmas. I tested positive for nearly two weeks and didn't go out at all apart from a couple of walks round the block. I couldn't live with myself if I passed it on to someone who was vulnerable. Just because the restrictions have been lifted, that doesn't mean that people should be so selfish and infect countless others.

Well work wouldn’t let ger go in with it. They are still paying her though.

The NHS is being stupid and telling people to not test and go to work with covid. You go to work with flu and a heavy cold. You infect patients. They don’t give a fuck.

legally she doesn’t have to stay at home, morally yes, but no one cares about infecting anyone else with a Cold/flu/anything these days.

bobomomo · 20/01/2024 16:16

Dp may have had covid before Christmas, we don't know for sure because they stopped giving out tests and I'm not paying for one, he worked from home anyway because he didn't feel well

Homelessnottoothless · 20/01/2024 16:17

I wish I hadn’t made any comment now. I honestly thought it was bad form to do it knowingly and when it could be avoided but I take on board what you are saying. Hands up, I was wrong.

I did but I wore a mask and only went for the essentials

Snowdogsmitten · 20/01/2024 16:25

Meh, I wouldn’t ever test now so I’d never know. I carry on as normal if I’m sick, I just give people a wider berth, whatever it is.

GintyMcGinty · 20/01/2024 16:29

You can go anywhere you want with Covid.

She us a civil servant. I think maybe the rules in Ireland are different. I posted them above.

Still with YABU. And it’s none of your business.

treath · 20/01/2024 16:31

I juts googled 'Covid restrictions Ireland' and it said there are none?

Dwappy · 20/01/2024 16:34

velvetstars · 20/01/2024 15:59

Covid is not a cold.

It is a virus that can incredibly dangerous. Just like flu. Of course you should stay home if you have Covid or flu until your symptoms improve and you're less likely to spread it to other people.

Some people will have mild flu that they don't know is flu. They might think its a cold. But someone else could catch it and get very ill or die. We don't have tests for flu at home to check if what we have is flu or a cold. So if someone thinks they have a mild cold but may well be covid what is the difference?
Unless we ALL stay home for any minor sniffle you will never truly know what you are spreading unless you test for every virus.

ellie09 · 20/01/2024 16:35

I had it and I had to go to the shops.

No issue really, I put on a mask and kept my distance from people.

There was no alternative because nobody else could do it for me, online shopping slots were a week away and I am a single mother.

There is no restrictions now on it either.

maddiemookins16mum · 20/01/2024 16:37

It’s not 2020 anymore. YABU.

LBFseBrom · 20/01/2024 16:37

I'm surprised she wants to go out, frankly, and there is nothing you cannot buy online and have delivered quickly. However, if she felt able to go to the shops, she has done nothing illegal so, basically, your friend is right.

Homelessnottoothless · 20/01/2024 16:40

Fair enough Folks. I will take that. I guess I will text her and say sorry for saying anything. Thanks all.

The only reason our family would test is if we are sick and need to know if we might need antibiotics. If it's covid then no antibiotics required.

I think there are guidelines to stay at home but I do know work would not hear tell of her going in.

OP posts:
BreatheAndFocus · 20/01/2024 16:43

She’s allowed to but it’s bloody selfish of her, frankly. Like the idiot who took out her child with chickenpox ‘because she was bored at home’. She went to the supermarket and came into contact with a pregnant woman who was in tears when she realised. The woman’s ‘excuse’ was the ‘bored at home’ crap. I had a go at her and so did the cashier. Some people are brainless and/or selfish.

If you have Covid, you can, in theory go out wherever you want, but it’s unnecessary and utterly selfish. Same with other potentially nasty viruses.

teenagetantrums · 20/01/2024 16:43

Over Christmas litteraly all of us at work had covid, but we went to work because we wouldn't get paid if we hadn't and there would have been 300 people without Christmas dinner if we hadn't. I only knew it was covid because someone tested and then l used one of my old tests. No one was that sick just normal cold, if l hadn't tested l wouldn't have know.

ellie09 · 20/01/2024 16:43

I think I would frown more on people going clothes shopping for non essential stuff etc.

I knew of a girl that went to the swimming pool with covid which I thought was beyond selfish.

If its to the food shop, I dont think its unreasonable.

Deebee90 · 20/01/2024 16:50

You can work, fly, shop and do anything with covid now. I’ve had covid 4 times and I’ve had to go out each time as no one else could get me things. I can’t wear a mask so it’s tough look. I got it off 4 people that clearly didn’t give a crap so why should I
