To think there shouldn't be measles outbreaks?

fatandhappy47 · 20/01/2024 06:39

Surely we shouldn't be having an issue with measles?
Had an email from school (secondary) 'reminding' us to keep kids off with measles, which got me thinking

All my kids band my friends kids of the same age had their MMR (however my youngest did get measles before this)

So why is it an issue in secondary schools of all places? Are people just not vaccinating their kids?

I find responses like these odd tbh.
Was was heavy handed about informing people that a vaccine, which dramatically reduces the impact of a potentially life threatening illness, is now available and recommended?

Now, see, I find responses like this odd...

'Informing people that a vaccine, which dramatically reduces the impact of a potentially life threatening illness, is now available and recommended,' is perfectly fine, of course.

But that's not what happened, is it?

No. What actually happened was people were pressured, coerced with everything from burgers to hookers, with those not 'submitting' barred from public places and, worse, fired from their jobs.

So can you maybe understand why people might now be a little less trusting?

“Shameless Anti-Vaxxer’

I cannot understand why this one area of medical science attracts the conspiracy theorists, controversy, Big Pharma etc etc.
Why would other areas of medical science/ medicines/treatments be ‘ok’ and vaccines not?

Surely if you believe that vaccines are wrong, then ALL medicines/medical science/research is ‘wrong’. If not, why not??

RampantIvy · 20/01/2024 11:38

I wonder if shameless anti vaxxers and those who refuse any kind of properly researched medical interventions would refuse insulin if they developed T1 diabetes?

How were people "coerced" with burgers and hookers😂

notmorezoom · 20/01/2024 11:42

People have 'done their research' and don't realise that not vaccinating is neglect. IMO child benefit and all other kid related benefits should be contingent on vaccinating.

Mirabai · 20/01/2024 11:42

To be fair the kids I know who’ve had measles had all been vaccinated. There’s something about measles jab in particular that I think may need a booster at secondary school.

The other issue is wild measles strains may be imported by travellers who are not immune. That may play a part in these outbreaks.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/01/2024 11:46

Dd2, now in her 40s, was born in Abu Dhabi, where babies were routinely given the MMR at 12 months. They were way ahead of the U.K. in this respect.
Dd was also vaccinated against TB (common in the area) shortly after birth.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 20/01/2024 11:47

The issue with these childhood diseases is the impact to the whole population and that sometimes the long term effects / not being vaccinated or indeed exposed as a child (which was the best you could do at one time, with parents believing that childhood infection was better than as an adult and it seems often rightly so) are not considered and can re-emerge years later. I worked with a chap whose parents had kept him at home as a child (parents paranoid about him catching anything) if anyone at school was sick (of an age when MMR not around), so he'd had none of the usual childhood ailments. As a parent he caught measles from his daughters and was admitted to hospital as he was very ill. A year of so later, chickenpox got him and he collapsed at work (so I saw the effects) and even tonsilitus did for him, every time, with him having them removed at 35 due to the number of infections he'd had. There are also post-viral issues and perhaps we need an education programme, so that the real facts, issues, potential issues are highlighted and not allow this lack of information to continue. I've seen deafness due to Mumps and my Mum-in-Law had Post Polio Syndrome 45 years after Polio, which to her was far more damaging than the initial infection. Too late to cry after the damage is done and I fear for some that will be the case. On MN we are reading what's being shared in the media and commenting, but many who should be taking up vaccination will not see the messaging on the sites we use and will remain uninformed until it is too late. Public service broadcasting should be using its clout to at least lay out the facts imo.

woopdedoodle · 20/01/2024 11:50

Just came on to say to any one who thinks diseases are natural and in some way strengthens. And people were telling me this 30 years ago when my kids were little, I'm of an age who can remember my little brother with whooping cough , who had friends at school who had survived polio, my Grannies had babies who had died, who caught measles and all the rest too.

It's not a simple childhood sniffle, it'll kill.

In the US people were offered free burgers, donuts and even free sex sessions in brothels if they gor vaccinated. It was fairly well advertised at the time.

My brother and I were children of the (early) 70s. We were not offered MMR. I do remember my friend's mum (a GP) ringing up and asking if we'd had German Measles (Rubella) and my brother (who hadn't) sitting in a car with her infected child for exposure (he went on to get it). I seem to remember this was thing for Chickenpox and Rubella, but Mumps and Measles were feared. The last part of this might be misremembered, but the last 2 were always talked about in terms of male infertility (Mumps) and blindness/deafness risk etc (Measles) amongst other things. My brother got all four of the illnesses, I only got Chickenpox and Rubella - (given the Rubella shot at 14). My kids are fully vaxxed.

I do wonder whether those over 40/50 ish ? Have natural immunity or are now at risk.

No, it's 12 months here as well, and was certainly the case 23 years ago.

Edited to add - apologies not sure what the schedule was here 40 years ago.

Sadly a lot of anti vaxxers distrust all reputable, evidence-based medicine. See the woman I mentioned previously who refuses to have mammograms despite strong family history of breast cancer, and refused ultrasounds and antenatal care during her pregnancy.

Plenty of people like this also refuse cancer treatment and the like.

My sister in law’s friends apparently gave their girls “homeopathic” MMR. I have no idea how anyone would think that would work, but SIL wasn’t particularly pro-vax either.

They are now in their early/mid 20s, presumably unvaccinated and possibly unaware of the risk they are now running.

A midwife in New York has been fined $300k for falsifying vaccination records and giving the kids "homeopathic" pellets instead. The parents paid her handsomely to do this, as the vaccination forms are required for school attendance.

I'm surprised she didn't lose her license.

New York midwife fined for giving 1,500 children homeopathic pellets instead of vaccines

The state health department found that the midwife had entered nearly 12,500 false vaccine records into its Immunization Information System since 2019.

I know, but I was talking 40 odd years ago. IMO leaving the MMR so late, put a lot of pregnant women in danger of German measles having a tragic effect on their unborn babies.

As an aside, Agatha Christie based one of her novels (The Mirror Crack’d….) on this very topic - someone with GM thoughtlessly infecting a pregnant woman - of course the thoughtless one paid with her life!

I stand corrected. It was 'kebabs for jabs':

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/kebabs-jabs-young-people-offered-24660998.amp

And this:

Offering junk food and illicit services in exchange for a medical intervention that's 'good for your health' is going to arouse suspicion, if you'll excuse the pun...

No, you weren't wrong.

It was also burgers and hookers.

I agree with PP thatI think @Notanotherbloodynamechange1 is confusing measles with German measles.

My sister had German measles when we were on holiday. We were staying near family at the time and my cousin put both her DC into the tent with my sister in the hope that they would catch it and get it over with. It didn't work.

Then @Notanotherbloodynamechange1 needs to come back to the thread, acknowledge their error and ask MNHQ to amend or pull their post. It’s a pretty fundamental error for a ‘shameless anti-vaxxer’ to make.

Agatha Christie got the idea from a real life incident, that happened to a Hollywood actress, Gene Tierney, in 1943. She was pregnant and the link between Rubella and the illness implications on unborn children just becoming known. A US Marine decided to break Rubella quarantine to meet the actress, she caught the disease and the effects on the child were devastating. Her daughter was born prematurely, had congenital damage - deaf, partially bling with cataracts and was severely mentally disabled. She was institutionalized for most of her life. This was the true life story that inspired Agatha Christie.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 20/01/2024 12:07

Sorry, addition to post - blind not bling.

ThirtyFlirtynThriving · 20/01/2024 12:07

Because sheepy people with tin foil hats are following a small group of idiots who haven’t actually done their research who won’t vaccinate their children.

We had a measles free status years ago, then vaccinations declined and we lost out measles free status.

Petrarkanian · 20/01/2024 12:12

I remember having measles and mumps, 70's child, we were isolated as soon as. The doctor even came out, imagine that now. Horrible diseases, no one shared them around, saying they did is despicable and completely false.

Porridgeislife · 20/01/2024 12:13

The UK should do what Australia does and make child benefit & 15/30 hour funding conditional on vaccination. Unless there’s a compelling medical reason not to vaccinate there’s no exceptions. People can decide how principled they are when it hurts their pockets.
