I sit on MACE too. Scares the shit out of me (I have teens).

I'm kind of used to them now - not as afraid to disagree with the overall view - often because other agencies need to pull their finger out and get the information! But at first I was a fish out of water - I am/was 'just' a careers worker! But often I am one of the few people working closely with the young person.

Oh I see what you mean now - yes I have teens and a bit older and it's horrifying when you realise how entrenched some of this stuff is - and how helpless you are

My day is spent at my computer, sweating to meet my deadline. A colleague drops by my desk to pass the time of day sometimes, and gets in a quick fumble and a snog. Also brings me coffee without my asking. Sometimes a glass of bubbly in case I might need it. I can get up from my desk from time to time and wander outside, but need to be within earshot of the office phone in case I'm needed. This hot weather, no-one blinks an eye if they see me at the computer in my undies.

You work with your spouse from home, somewhere in the southern hemisphere. What as, I'm not sure.

HalloumiGeller · 17/01/2024 22:49

I help people who are bereaved.

I don't actually get swore at or abused (very rarely) and most people are just upset and need help, so as long as we provide the service they're paying for then all is good and it's very rewarding.

Neither of those, They might be better than my actual job.

Yes! I work for a Virtual School for Looked After Children - mainly yr10-11 supporting, 16-18 NEET and 18-25 support

I bloody LOVE my job but it is demanding and stressful - I work with any of our young people in care regardless of where they are placed - so travel - a lot!

I am so glad that jobs like yours still actually exist after all this austerity.

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 17/01/2024 22:51

Hated by most, needed by many on occasion. Rarely knock on doors with good news.

Me too! We had to fight so hard for it - when Connexions was dissolved it was a real fight to keep 2 people to support our care experienced kids - thankfully lots of Virtual Schools did the same so we are still out there doing our best!

Funeral director

Yes! Well I'm a funeral arranger (cremations) so not quite a funeral director, but almost 🙂

I get people showing me random bits of metal and asking me what they are and if we sell them, and also asking for advice on plumbing, electrical and gas things, even though I'm not qualified to answer on any of those things, (but people in those fields are our main customer base.)

Do you work at Screwfix, Wickes or B&Q?

tralalalalalalalal · 17/01/2024 22:58

@BonheursTrousers of course! Best job ever

LadyPoison · 17/01/2024 22:59

My nails are wrecked, my hands covered with burns and bruises and I spend a lot of time on my hands and knees looking for tiny objects which make people happy...

Itsbeginingtolookalotlikexmas · 17/01/2024 22:59

This last week I have been hit, licked and ignored by the people I work with. They almost never do what I ask but I love it. I use a lot of Velcro.

BonheursTrousers · 17/01/2024 23:00

@tralalalalalalalal horray! I guessed right! Really enjoying this thread after grumpy day!

BonheursTrousers · 17/01/2024 23:03
