To ask if Donald Trump could actually be president again?

I've just seen a headline about him now being the front runner for the Republican nomination. Which I assume means it's entirely a possibility that he could then win.

I'm British (English) so I know our current government is a complete embarrassment. But I will never get my head around DT having been president once never mind possibly twice.

How could this happen??

I very much doubt Trump will get elected again, for a number of reasons:

  1. Once the DoJ case starts for Jan 6 events there's going to be so much evidence coming out about Trump it will have a huge impact on his image. His MAGA support base will follow him no matter what, but the rest of America will be watching. I'd put good money on the fact that he will be convicted by the DoJ once they get him in the courthouse.
  1. He is bragging about Roe vs Wade as his achievement, thereby alienating a lot of female voters, who have yet to cast their votes.
  1. There are going to be massive financial penalties against him in the NY Fraud trial and in E. Jean Carroll case which could take him to bankruptcy. This will impact his financial standing and he will have to lean on his MAGA supporters even more to pay his bills.
  1. Iowa was always a given that Trump would win. It's New Hampshire that will be interesting.
  1. SCOTUS have yet to rule on presidential immunity (when and if they take the case)and on the 14th Amendment case. Big decisions with big consequences for Trump.

Overall I see this as a good move. It's needs to be a Trump v Biden election because the MAGA question needs to be decided by the American people. If it isn't it will always be a lingering thorn in the side of the US constitution.

Remember this is just the Republican nomination vote and it was always going to be Trump as the candidate. Look how the Republicans have behaved in Congress, they were never going to go against him. Although Liz Chaney is definitely worthy of respect!

He is the ‘front runner’ for Republican nomination, but the only recent update is that he had 53% of the vote in the Iowa caucus

The caucuses are made up of registered members of the particular party
47% of Iowa caucus voters voted against Trump / for alternatives
In the 2020 Iowa caucus Trump as incumbent president had 97%, but in 2016 came second to Ted Cruz with 27% Cruz and 24% Trump - then he went on to win the election

Yesterdays result will be taken as an indicator for the remaining states.

I truly hope that Trump will not become President again (I don't think that an already impeached candidate facing further legal action should even be allowed to stand anyway), but really fear he just might. Biden is preferable, but still not great and I don't think his following is high anymore..

I find it hard to believe that Biden and Trump are really the best two candidates that the Democrats or the Republicans can come up with. What a paltry choice!!

Hecate01 · 16/01/2024 10:14

With the shit show that we have to pick from in our country I don't think we are in any position to comment on how other countries vote or who they field for president.

Anisette · 16/01/2024 08:51

I really hope not.

I wonder how many of his supporters realise that he would ditch all help to Ukraine if he came into power?

He has also said he wouldn’t defend Europe if it was attacked. He wants to abandon NATO. It would put us in a very vulnerable position.

I can’t believe how stupid (and I don’t use that term flippantly and use it very rarely) the American public are. It’s absolutely shocking he has any followers at all.

Not (as I’d expected) Tenancy Deposit Scheme, but Trump Derangement Syndrome.
apparently.

TDS as Trump derangement syndrome works both ways.

Deranged for Trump and deranged against Trump

AtomicBlondeRose · 16/01/2024 10:16

I think he’ll win again and certainly going to prison would be no barrier to him getting votes.

The liberal establishment in the US ought to be ashamed of itself with the way it has actively added to Trump’s popularity. The crowing, the attempts to humiliate and marginalise Trump and his supporters (which have the opposite effect), the way they act during those congressional hearings etc, the idolisation of people like AOC, the blatant refusal to admit Biden is anything other than amazing, the shoehorning in of diversity issues to all sorts of areas, the liberalisation of immigration and drugs laws that make some areas basically ungoverned - I’m so far from being a Trump/ Republican supporter it’s laughable but god I’d find it hard to vote Democrat. I find my US democrat friends have a very insular, narrow-minded “be kind” mindset of late and it’s almost like brainwashing. Whatever Trump or the GOP say, they say the opposite even when that opposite makes no sense! There’s definitely a trend towards this in some of the stupider areas of the Left in this country but it’s just entrenched over there.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/01/2024 10:16

ATM, it’s looking very likely, mad though that seems.
Hopefully, it will be prevented through the courts.

IhateMIL · 16/01/2024 10:16

So many people just jump on the trump hate train. I am willing to accept his character is lacking, but he definitely makes up for it in other ways.

I seriously hope he DOES become president. He's an excellent politician and built excellent bonds with other world leaders. All of which Joe biden has destroyed.

sashagabadon · 16/01/2024 10:17

I think @Darkandstormynite all those reasons listed why Trump won’t win are exactly the reasons why he will!

That makes us more vulnerable than the US though

@Fullfatandfortyplus which Google did you use?! There's a lot out there about Trump and racism. There's whole Wikipedia page dedicated to it.

I'm no trump fan but all you'll find is a long list of hearsay largely from the 70's and 80's.Also he called Covid "kung flu" due to its supposed Chinese origin.

Plenty of evidence for him being a massive Bellend but not much for racism

If Trump wins, you can kiss goodbye to democracy and the rule of law in the USA. Whilst she is also an extremist, I am watching Haley closely as a contender. As for the Democrats...I hope they have a plan in place if Biden falls ill. Presidential campaigning comes with a brutal travelling schedule.

The ‘plan’ is Kamala Harris. Thats the clear procedure if it happened after the Electoral College votes. If it happened before however, well it could be a free for all. Quite a risk I’d have thought.

keylemon · 16/01/2024 10:20

@AtomicBlondeRose exactly 👍 What a mess the Democrats made and still go on about people supporting the opposition as merely thick and uneducated.

Isn’t character important in a POTUS?

Yep. 100%. Criminals shouldn't be allowed run in elections.

The open border policy surprises me. Is that really how it is now?
Trumps "wall" was never going to work though, was it? Didn't he also try / possibly succeed in ending the Dreamer scheme?

@lusciousgrooves when you talk about wars you make it sound like the US under Biden started them. Do you think that Ukraine / Isreal wouldn't have happened if Trump was president now?

I don't think Russia would have invaded Ukraine if Trump had been president.

I am not a supporter of Trump either.

Doteycat · 16/01/2024 10:02

He said it at the rally the other night.
He said I don't care if you are on your last legs get up and vote for me. You might die after it but at least ill have your vote.
It's available online if you don't believe it.

I’ve just seen a clip of it online. It’s just unbelievable, the stuff he says. It’s so extreme and he says it so casually.

I think one of the problems I had when Trump was president last time - aside from his racist, misogynistic views and the poor governing decisions he made, particularly during the pandemic - was that he doesn’t behave in a statesmanlike way at all.

It’s no comparison really between Trump and Obama - and I know Obama made mistakes during his time as president - but Obama gave the position honour and dignity.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 16/01/2024 10:25

I think it's extremely likely that he will be elected next president.

It's all part of the waning of the USA as a global power in my opinion. All 'empires' come to a natural end and those epochs of power are becoming shorter. Post ww2 the US has been the economic and 'democratic' powerhouse. That's changing and it's entering slow decline.

I also agree that younger mover and shakers in the US political system are waiting for the old guard to die. No point in them putting themselves forward. Political suicide if they did.

MorrisZapp · 16/01/2024 10:25

I'm a decent person and I wish no harm to anyone but in his case I'll make an exception. Big heart attack in his sleep would make the world a much less toxic place.
