To ask if Donald Trump could actually be president again?

I've just seen a headline about him now being the front runner for the Republican nomination. Which I assume means it's entirely a possibility that he could then win.

I'm British (English) so I know our current government is a complete embarrassment. But I will never get my head around DT having been president once never mind possibly twice.

How could this happen??

How could this happen??

Because enough people want to vote for him?

The question is, why do so many people want to vote for him when he has shown time and time again that he is unfit for public office of any kind?

TypicalCoach · 16/01/2024 09:27

Multiple reasons
Because for the Democrats to win they need alot of centrists which the Democrats are largely made up of, the perception in the news of the Democratic party is made up of seeing the extreme left and celebrities, which in this Social media world is so prevalent and will annoy centrists

Republicans means less tax which means more money to the individual

The open borders which is a massive failure especially now as its a major issue in democratic cities, which even they are struggling to justify, its irrational how the Democrats have largely just abandoned their borders

There are alot of conservatives in America regardless of race, i think people see the " deep south" as these white conservatives places but there are significant amount of other races who live there who also hold conservatives views.

Yes. Sadly. And the world may well face nuclear war as a result. We should all be very scared.

Eh, what a joke. How many wars have there been whilst Biden has been in power? How many during Trump's Presidency? TDS runs deep. I find Biden much more scary than Trump.

TokyoSushi · 16/01/2024 09:28

Oh yes, it's highly likely in fact.

It's absolutely fascinating to watch.

Unless he's actually in prison at the time, I expect he will, yes.

My main fear is he'll try to change the two term limit. People will say no he won't but I think he'll try. He'll claim he's owed extra because of that stolen election he claims happened 🙄 and all sorts of conspiracy theory shit like that. He's got a massive following of idiots and conspiracy theory nutters. Stupid people + guns = danger.

He idolises dictators and he'll try his best to become one. He's extremely unlikely to succeed but that won't stop him trying. He'll try to use the military to achieve that.

Come back to this thread in a few years and we'll see if I was right.

He is on record as wanting to become a dictator “for a day”. Everyone has a good laugh. He’s deadly serious.

lemans · 16/01/2024 09:30

Not only is Trump likely to win, but he has already made it clear that he will be going straight after anyone who has been against him. We can expect dodgy legal charges against many prosecutors etc and the replacement of all senior political, legal and public officials with trump cronies who will rubber-stamp anything he comes up with.

I was going to say the Americans are sleep-walking into a brutal four years, but in reality, they seem to be quite happily sprinting towards it with their eyes closed.

Me too.

HairyQueenofSnots · 16/01/2024 09:30

Yeah, I would expect the 2 term limit to be under pressure also. Should he win.

Because I like Trump, thought he was a good President and I can't stand Biden.

Why was he a good president? All the evidence would suggest to the contrary but I’m happy to read the alternative because the very thought of it makes me want to weep.

Deathbyathousandcats · 16/01/2024 09:32

If not for the severe impact on the rest of us, eg removal of support for Ukraine, isolationism and potential withdrawal from NATO, it’d serve the US right.
It’d provide the impetus for the new civil war so many of them seem to crave.

Why? Trump, the lover of dictators, do you not find that idea remotely scary? Or you want Trump the dictator or you think he’s joking?

Thesearmsofmine · 16/01/2024 09:33

Yes I think he will be the next president. It’s mad to me that the choice is going to be between him or Biden.

Agree, the prospect is genuinely very frightening for so many reasons. Women especially must be terrified after Roe vs Wade. 😢

beguilingeyes · 16/01/2024 09:34

How has Biden started wars?
If Trump pulls out of supporting Ukraine Putin will have carte blanche to do whatever he likes.

Those who vote for him are likely ok with this

I don’t think the US will be as badly off as us if he withdraws from NATO or Ukraine if funding stops

Thewateriswide · 16/01/2024 09:34

The two term limit is the Twenty-second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Changing the Constitution is extremely difficult.

tinkertee · 16/01/2024 09:34

The open border policy surprises me. Is that really how it is now?
Trumps "wall" was never going to work though, was it? Didn't he also try / possibly succeed in ending the Dreamer scheme?

@lusciousgrooves when you talk about wars you make it sound like the US under Biden started them. Do you think that Ukraine / Isreal wouldn't have happened if Trump was president now?

If Trump wins, you can kiss goodbye to democracy and the rule of law in the USA. Whilst she is also an extremist, I am watching Haley closely as a contender. As for the Democrats...I hope they have a plan in place if Biden falls ill. Presidential campaigning comes with a brutal travelling schedule.

And yet there have been many Anne demented, including the 22nd. It can be done.

Araminta1003 · 16/01/2024 09:39

I was in the States in the summer on work in DC and travelling and had a fair few discussions about why the Democrats are not letting Michelle Obama take centre stage. That would certainly be far better for Europe. Let’s hope it happens. She may not win and they will probably uncover lots of dirt on her (and maybe she is reluctant to go into that toxicity), but let’s hope she is given a chance. I think that is the only hope. What we don’t want though is for her to take the fall and then never be in the picture again. So it may be Trump and then her in the future.

cardibach · 16/01/2024 09:39

Anne demented? Amendments! Stupid phone. On the app so can't edit.

NameChangeForThisPost234 · 16/01/2024 09:42

I'm ashamed to say this but...
my political knowledge is very lacking. I don't like trump and have seen enough in the media about how to speaks about women etc., which, I have to say, is my main reason for disliking him.
I was having a 'discussion' with a close family member who seems to support Trump (I'm ashamed on their behalf about this, too). They seemed to suggest that he was actually a good president and while he was in power, USA unemployment dropped and as did immigration. I don't know if this is true and therefore didn't have a response.

Mumsnet, please educate me. @Mothership4two, what exactly did he do wrong during his presidency? I love a response should the conversation come up again with days relative (or just in general).

Overtheatlantic · 16/01/2024 09:42

I think we should wait and see how many women turn out to vote on behalf of their rights. The Republicans got spanked in the midterms.
