To ask if Donald Trump could actually be president again?

I've just seen a headline about him now being the front runner for the Republican nomination. Which I assume means it's entirely a possibility that he could then win.

I'm British (English) so I know our current government is a complete embarrassment. But I will never get my head around DT having been president once never mind possibly twice.

How could this happen??

Apparently, if Trump wins the election, there is nothing in the Constitution - at the moment - that could stop him being President even if he is in jail. Also he could pardon himself of all charges!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/01/2024 09:45

It's incredible to me that in a country of 300 million people two extremely elderly men, Biden and Trump, are the only options for the next President. Biden has been unimpressive and seems to be in very poor health. Why haven't the Dems been able to make him understand he couldn't stand again, for the good of the country?

Trump - if he had less money he'd have been in prison several times by now for sexual assault and probably fraud and tax evasion. How a person of his character can be considered suitable for the Presidency of the richest country in the world is a mystery to me. How he appeals to ordinary working people is also a mystery to me, as he was born into a very rich family and has never known poverty. He isn't even a particularly good businessman! He's racist, sexist, cruel, selfish, manipulative, lies as easily as breathing and not very bright. What is his appeal?

I hope he won’t especially since his latest tweet was basically “I don’t care if you die on your way home from the voting office as long as you vote for me first”

That’s so awful. I wouldn’t put it past Trump to say something like that, but also can’t believe he actually said it.

Rewis · 16/01/2024 09:50

I just can't belive that there is nobody else other than Trump and Biden.

And yet there have been many Anne demented, including the 22nd. It can be done.

Yup. It's been done 27 times. He will certainly try to make it 28.

Try does not mean succeed. I think he will try. I hope he will not succeed.

oh I can't get my head round it, I thought he wasn't allowed to run again yet here is voters wanting him as their candidate again, I can't work out what's happening.

Peehaps they saw a positive difference in their communities under Trump? I don't know but there has to be a reason.

Thewateriswide · 16/01/2024 09:55

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g you're extremely naive if you think anyone who runs for president isn't independently very wealthy or has backers with huge pockets and virtually unlimited funds.

Candidates are usually carefully chosen and approved by Wall St. Trump totally broke the mould as the elites assumed Hilary was a done deal.

Many Trump voters would have voted for Bernie Saunders but he was prevented from getting the Democratic nomination previously (although he is also ancient).

Biden is as corrupt as all.the rest.

MagentaRocks · 16/01/2024 09:55

I hope not but it wouldn’t surprise me if he won again. I find it incredible that someone like him has so many supporters

keylemon · 16/01/2024 09:56

The Democrats should have a decent candidate to beat Trump. If he wins is because of Biden and Kamala incompetence. I doubt he will win but If he does the wailing and crying of the Democrats is going to be so unbearable. 😝

3luckystars · 16/01/2024 09:56

How, in that whole enormous country are these the choices.
Why is the system so messed up that there are no other options. You have to have billions behind you to become president in the USA.

I think he will get back in. Yes I do.

Doteycat · 16/01/2024 09:56

WandaWonder · 16/01/2024 08:56

Well he was once so why not?

Probably the most stupid quesion ever.

doodlepants · 16/01/2024 09:58

I work with people whose job it is to know all about this and they have predicted he will win the next election.

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 16/01/2024 09:54

Abortion.
That's it. That's the only reason.
Say goodbye to America and quite likely Europe if he gets in again.
Peace in Europe won't withstand him. Not when he backs Putin and halts aid to Ukraine.
You can debate bollox all night but that's the long and the short of it.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 16/01/2024 09:13

And what has Trump done except be racist and sexist, and lets not forget he instigated the attack on the Capitol Building, why are you supporting him?

I see this said a lot and I’ve just had a Google but I can’t find anything he’s done that’s racist. Do you have any examples?

IncompleteSenten · 16/01/2024 10:00

Fundamentally, people are selfish. Not just Americans. All of us. Our personal interests concern us more than the interests of our wider community. People like trump appeal because of that. Your problems are the fault of X group. I'll help you. Why should your money be spent on Y group? I'll help you. Look at this group of people, they're the enemy. I'll help you. If this policy goes ahead other people will benefit! You may or may not benefit but you won't benefit more than other people. I'll help you.

Trump is one man. He can't do anything by himself. Selfishness and short sightedness are (ultimately) fatal flaws in our species that gives men like him power. They're also what will likely be our end.

SpursFan2 · 16/01/2024 09:49

That’s so awful. I wouldn’t put it past Trump to say something like that, but also can’t believe he actually said it.

He said it at the rally the other night.
He said I don't care if you are on your last legs get up and vote for me. You might die after it but at least ill have your vote.
It's available online if you don't believe it.

Same as Andrew Tate. The answer is that it reflects the erosion of the white working class male. If you look at their attainment statistics in the US and here, you will soon see why this form of populism is on the rise. If the male white was the dominant force just 50 years ago (near the top, even if working class) and now near the bottom of the social food chain, then that is the consequence. The answer is to look after the white working class boys from infancy and give them a chance. It was also one of the causes of Brexit (looking back at a bygone era). Politicians like Trump and Boris Johnson just play into this. They know how to trick this lot, the disenfranchised. They only get some power and a say during elections/referendums. The rest of the time they are forgotten.

Here is a funny article by the author of Trainspotting:

I think it is very likely, and it scares the hell out of me.

Why?? He's very isolationist. He very likely won't get involved in wars or foreign affairs in any real way. He'll likely say and do things which offend a great many people and that's about it.

What are you scared of?

Tattletwat · 16/01/2024 10:06

You have Biden who doesn't know what day it is. And you have Trump who doesn't care what day it is.

Out of a country of 300 million is laughable these are best candidates.

caringcarer · 16/01/2024 10:07

In Iowa he got more votes than all other candidates put together. I think he will be president again. I can't understand why they keep voting for the candidates who are about 80.

ruffler45 · 16/01/2024 10:09

The really bad option is Joe Biden and not knowing who is/will be actually making the decisons on his behalf (Kamala?, Obama? Clinton X 2, Pelosi, Schiff??) ...Lots of previously very vocal Democrats have now gone very very quiet.

It is a bit suspicious that there has been no succession planning by either Democrats or Republicans in the last 4 years.

He appeals to not very bright, racist, sexist, selfish people who feel he is one of them.

KimberleyClark · 16/01/2024 09:26

The question is, why do so many people want to vote for him when he has shown time and time again that he is unfit for public office of any kind?

The question is, if all of that is true (and of course it is) then why don’t said people think they’d be better off under a Democrat president? If so many people are disenfranchised enough that they see Trump as their only saviour, that’s on the Democrats.
I suppose you could conclude that they’re all thick racists, or some such, but that didn’t help the UK through Brexit, and it won’t help the US through this.

tinkertee · 16/01/2024 10:12

@Fullfatandfortyplus which Google did you use?! There's a lot out there about Trump and racism. There's whole Wikipedia page dedicated to it.
