To ask if Donald Trump could actually be president again?

I've just seen a headline about him now being the front runner for the Republican nomination. Which I assume means it's entirely a possibility that he could then win.

I'm British (English) so I know our current government is a complete embarrassment. But I will never get my head around DT having been president once never mind possibly twice.

How could this happen??

Unless he's actually in prison at the time, I expect he will, yes.

My main fear is he'll try to change the two term limit. People will say no he won't but I think he'll try. He'll claim he's owed extra because of that stolen election he claims happened 🙄 and all sorts of conspiracy theory shit like that. He's got a massive following of idiots and conspiracy theory nutters. Stupid people + guns = danger.

He idolises dictators and he'll try his best to become one. He's extremely unlikely to succeed but that won't stop him trying. He'll try to use the military to achieve that.

Come back to this thread in a few years and we'll see if I was right.

Trump will win in November, majority in the USA hate the way the country is going under senile Biden, open borders, countless wars, caring more about illegals than his own citizens, the economy is woeful. A lot on MN can't get past their TDS to see how weak & pathetic the USA is right now on the world stage under Biden!

Rosiesmum23 · 16/01/2024 09:09

I think it is very likely, and it scares the hell out of me.

EffieeBriest · 16/01/2024 09:10

Scares me too. The climate change denial in particular.

Im finding the american political sysyem extremely hard to follow 😵‍💫

oh I can't get my head round it, I thought he wasn't allowed to run again yet here is voters wanting him as their candidate again, I can't work out what's happening.

ReadtheReviews · 16/01/2024 09:10

I agree that it might tip things close to some.sort of civil war in America if he does. If he is given power as well as his platform.
America is quite isolationist, so they really won't care about Ukraine as a voting issue.

EffieeBriest · 16/01/2024 09:11

@Mrsjayy yeah I thought he was banned from standing in one state (vaguely remember seeing on the news recently).

Thewateriswide · 16/01/2024 09:12

@Anisette I don't think you can grasp how very far away most of the USA is from Europe, figuratively and literally. Ukraine has fallen off the back burner in terms of issues as so many Americans are struggling with serious poverty, massive inflation, crime and other major issues in the past few years. Large numbers of the USA population have no connection with Europe. In the Zoomer and Alpha generations white people only make up about 50% of the population. In many states such as California white people are less than half the population. The Cold War and all the Eurocentric foreign policy doesn't have the same support it did in decades past. I am not saying that is how I feel, just that people are tired of seeing billions poured into foreign wars while large swaths of the USA population are struggling and not seeing those taxes invested at home.

Trump is only a mystery to people who get all their news from mainstream outlets and Twitter etc as it is dominated by left-wing journalists. The first time he was elected most people In Europe and in the big cities of the USA assumed it could never happen and were dumbstruck. This is because the are completely disconnected from half the nation.

They don't understand how elites ignore so much of the USA and stereotype people who aren't left wing like them.

Trump is popular because he is a populist, large numbers of people are very angry and he taps into that anger.

Trying to get him convicted and thrown in jail or banned from running has only made him more popular. What people in the UK don't understand is he talks to and appeals to working-class and lower middle class/upper working class people, who Washington D.C. politicians ignore - including the Democrats.

Democrats represent about 15% of the USA population and Republicans about another 15%. 50% of the population never votes, 20% are floating voters.

I agree with pp it’s looking likely

he was and he's in court every other day ! I don't understand.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 16/01/2024 09:13

And what has Trump done except be racist and sexist, and lets not forget he instigated the attack on the Capitol Building, why are you supporting him?

Deathbyathousandcats · 16/01/2024 09:14

If you’d told me twenty years ago that I’d be nostalgic for Dubya…

Mrsjayy · 16/01/2024 09:13

He was banned in a couple of states but the matter will go to the Supreme Court, which is stuffed with Trump appointees and so will likely be overturned.

lusciousgrooves · 16/01/2024 09:16

I really hope so!

thefallen · 16/01/2024 09:16

Yes. Sadly. And the world may well face nuclear war as a result. We should all be very scared.

Out of curiosity are you an average Republican and one who sees the US as being weak etc?

You do realise that the world's perception of America was radically changed for the worse when it elected Trump the first time?

@user1484056932 what does TDS stand for?

Not (as I’d expected) Tenancy Deposit Scheme, but Trump Derangement Syndrome.
apparently.

Mrsjayy · 16/01/2024 09:13

he was and he's in court every other day ! I don't understand.

The way I understand things is that he wasn't going to win there anyway, and it actually did him a favour for the other states where he will be standing.

But I don't really know much about the American Electoral system.

KimberleyClark · 16/01/2024 09:22

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 16/01/2024 09:00

I can't fathom why

  1. America doesn't have an upper age limit on presidents

  2. why someone found guilty of fraud is allowed to be president

  3. why America is so batshit crazy!

They think there is a big liberal conspiracy.

It’s now even more imperative that the Tories lose the next election. The whole world seems to be lurching rightwards.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 16/01/2024 09:22

How could this happen??

Because enough people want to vote for him?

Thewateriswide · 16/01/2024 09:24

I hate to wake MN up to this fact but Americans did better economically under Trump than Biden and Trump did not start any wars. He also tried to close the border and control illegal immigration from the Southern border. Since Biden its been completely uncontrolled and cities, including NYC and Chicago, are swamped by new arrivals with nowhere to go.

I am not a Trump supporter, just trying to explain why he still has support.

lusciousgrooves · 16/01/2024 09:24

tinkertee · 16/01/2024 09:17

Do you mean you hope he'll be president? Why?

Because I like Trump, thought he was a good President and I can't stand Biden.
