Would you have a baby at 50?

pumpkinpatch6 · 16/01/2024 01:01

Off the back of the "Do you regret having a baby at 40" thread, would you have a child at 50 assuming you can provide for it emotionally and financially? Obviously medical assistance would be needed.

@Bex5490 he's had ANOTHER one?! Jesus christ, as someone who's name escapes me used to say "put something on the end of it!" 😆

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 So ashamed to recognise his catchphrases so quickly.🙈

Lily27 · 27/01/2024 16:21

trying to understand this - so who should be sterilised - 30 year olds, 50 year olds?? Who gets to decide? Sounds incredibly authoritarian

OShoey · 27/01/2024 21:29

It's actually a bit more complicated than the world being 'overpopulated', somethingwhich has no definite numerical definition. The fertility rate has been declining for decades which means in much of the world we are at our beneath the 2.1 children per woman that is seen as replacements rate. In percentage terms the young population now, under 6's, is significantly lower than it was 50 years ago. This is problematic.

As is ever considering forced sterilisation as a rational policy. I believe Hitler and Mao Tse Tung were into it; be careful the company you keep.

LousySpice · 27/01/2024 21:42

Population decrease is good for us all

Also, could be wrong here, but I think pp may have been joking when she said Jeremy Kyle makes a good case for sterilisation. Just a theory, maybe even a bit outlandish to suggest

He sure loved shouting it at others enough! To which all the audience would clap...what a hypocrite. He obviously has trouble putting anything on the end of it himself. I'm sure with his arrogance he saw himself as far more important than any of his guests therefore doesn't need to live by those rules.

I agree with the comments about it not just being that he can afford all these kids (I don't know how much he got paid for that appalling show) but it being about the cost to the environment etc. plus he's pushing 60...

Totally agree - what an absolute toss pot 🤷🏽‍♀️

Alwaysdieting · 28/01/2024 06:35

Im sorry if this upsets anyone, but I was just looking at the Shopping site and wondered how anyone could afford any of the stuff on there. There never seems to be anything from the cheaper shops just top of the range stuff like, " oh does anyone think I should buy this £500 dress to wear at a wedding" type of thing.
Or do people just put random things on there and pretend they are buying them. Am I being a bit stupid and out of order

Alwaysdieting · 28/01/2024 06:36

Sorry meant to put this on Chat.

Fair point if it's meant to be a joke, maybe it just didn't land.

On the issue of population decrease being good for all us, do you have more on that? It goes counter to what I've read so I'd be interested to know what the arguments are and who is making them?

chaosmaker · 29/01/2024 02:05

Not joking. I rationally haven't had kids and would have been happily sterilised - even more happily coming to the part of my life where I can't have them so yay for me. We are 8 billion + and increasing all the time.

Much too much.

I sometimes wonder if populations that were too successful became a victim of their own success in some way - like the Mayans (not sure if they are what I'm thinking of) and disappeared due to overpopulation.
I don't understand the replacement rate when we don't need to replace ourselves Especially when we're actively working on replacing ourselves with AI.

46mumof6 · 29/01/2024 02:26

No it's to old, thinking of having a 15 year old when I'm kid 60s nightmare.
My oldest will be 30 when I'm 50 in 2026.
Waiting for Grandkids now

I remember watching a documentary with David Attenborough about overpopulation and it honestly felt like there's a horrific future for the planet unless there is a population decrease.
Yes, it does mean less people to pay for and care for the elderly, but the planet needs to get back in balance.

I agree with you...No one 'needs' more than two children {unless you adopt more}
It's a kind of vanity to keep on reproducing.

LisaD1 · 29/01/2024 20:35

A definite no from me! Our youngest is 16 and we have a lovely life, lots of time to do things together as a couple as well as a family. I wouldn’t give that up.

How old is your youngest?

chaosmaker · 29/01/2024 23:48

@OShoey have a look at the Population Matters website for more information. Each one of us, especially in the western world uses so many resources. The single most effective thing to do for climate change is not to make more people.

Also on the AI thing there is a particularly terrifying Storyville about this on iPlayer. Called AI Human I think.

MassageForLife · 02/02/2024 05:24

That is one of the worst/laziest articles I've read I've the in the daily mail. 'one poster said'. 'another poster said'. 'another poster said'.

I'm guessing that they didn't have anything for the 'journalist' to do, so they tasked her with finding something here. She found that, wrote it as quickly as possible then sat scrolling insta for the rest of the day.

HappyDaze23 · 02/02/2024 06:50

Oh jeez. My whole post is written out in the body of the article. Never thought I’d be quoted in the Daily Mail.

BarnacleHead · 02/02/2024 07:58

This article is the only thing that's 'unimaginably bad'.

Ellen Coughlan, I dare you... to... try actual journalism😚

Couldn't even add in another news story about older mothers or some stats. Just repeat what 'posters' said on an online forum, including screenshots.

Busy75 · 02/02/2024 12:00

That’s the Daily Fail for you.

I don’t think one can call it journalism.

Lannielou · 02/02/2024 12:02

A big no from me

Dustyblue · 16/01/2024 03:15

Tru dat. No one blinks an eye at a man becoming a father at 50. Sigh.

But that's because it's usually the mum that does most of the hard graft. He's around or not around so it's not so relevant his age.
I think that's what people think.
Might be wrong 🤔 am open to be convinced otherwise.

SheddingCat · 10/08/2024 22:14

Absolutely not.

Asparagus1 · 10/08/2024 22:15

No way, I’m 37 and couldn’t have another now, never mind at 50!
