To think it's odd my husband didn't eat the roast meat because my dad had touched it

Just before Christmas, my husband and I went to visit my family for the weekend, for an early-christmas celebration. My sister did a big roast for us (for my parents, siblings & families).

The meat was a lovely roast lamb. My dad was helping by carving the meat. He put his hand on the skin of the joint and carved. So he had touched the edges of the meat.

My husband loves meat but he didn't take any of it. When I asked him later, he said it was because he didn't think my dad had clean hands, because he once heard him (at a different time) flush the loo and come out quickly, and he suspected that he hadn't washed his hands. So now his general assumption is that my dad doesn't have clean hands.

AIBU to think it's odd that my husband didn't eat the meat for this reason? (given he normally loves it).

I think he needs to get a grip

DJer24 · 15/01/2024 12:31

The whole scrutinising how quickly your DF exited the loo after flushing and telling you about it is just bizarre in the first place. Add this and the hand sanitising mid meals and I agree your DH sounds a bit unhinged.

But not on the meat. 😁😉

But he used to sanitise a lot for years before COVID. I think he's been doing it at the same level for years.

OCD is generally long-standing disorder - the problem is that it can escalate and it can do so suddenly at times of stress or change. It can go from manageable to unmanageable quite quickly. That’s why it’s always better to seek treatment.

The OP's DH is carrying round bottles of sanitiser and sanitising his hands during a meal. That is not "normal" levels of concern about germs. The fact that he is clearly hyper vigilant about germs and food also means that his perception of other people's cleanliness (or lack of it) is probably skewed. He suspects that the OP's father doesn't wash his hands after going to the loo based on his own obsession with cleaning and germs and does not have any proof to back this up.

The person with issues here is not the father who may or may not be washing his hands. It's the DH.

For all we know, the meal could have been somewhere like Nando's with communal condiment bottles and limited use of cutlery. I would be wrapping a napkin around them or sanitising my hands before then eating with them.
I also would not eat food touched by someone whose hygiene standards repulsed me. He was happy to eat the food prepared by your sister - it's probably just that your Dad is a minger! (At least in DH's opinion)
He obviously didn't cause a fuss, so let the man eat what he wants.

Blinky21 · 15/01/2024 12:43

I have never known anyone to put their hands on meat to carve it, they hold it with a fork or cloth. It would put me off but I hate anyone unnecessary touching my food

SkulkHollow · 15/01/2024 12:45

Not washing your hands before touching food you are serving to someone else is pretty grim. I'm on team DH on this one.

orangeblosssom · 15/01/2024 12:45

I wouldn't want to eat the meat either

Blinky21 · 15/01/2024 12:45

I also carry anti viral hand sanitiser and always have, long before covid and funnily enough don't tend to get all the colds and viruses that others I know do

Nah sometimes you just notice something. Doesn't mean he was scrutinising.

Once had a good friend's DH on a couples Indian meal out stick his finger in one of my sauces to 'try it' then licked it off his finger. Only saving grace was he didn't double dip but I had to eat my curry dry. Dh gave me some of his which friend hadnt dipped into. Never been out for a meal with them since and never will. Disgusting ,who does that ?

Iloverockntroll · 15/01/2024 13:11

To all those saying the lamb is fine to eat and they would have no issue, calling the DH unhinged and a nut job etc......we don’t know how Op’s father pisses. He could be sticking his hand in his pants, dragging everything out, sweaty balls and all, have a firm grip while he takes aim, maybe scratch his arse with the other hand. Would you still say that you would have no problem eating the food?? 🤢

I don't blame your DH for not wanting to eat it if he suspected he hadn't washed his hands after touching his bits.

They are if you touched the flush that everyone else touched BEFORE they washed their hands. So you wash your hands then touch something covered I'm bacteria.

You missed out the word 'sweaty'!!

Mufflepuff · 15/01/2024 13:13

Sorry I quoted the wrong person

OhcantthInkofaname · 15/01/2024 00:15

I wash my hands before I flush. So he would think my hands are unclean.

I meant to quote this poster about how unhygienic it is to touch the flush after you've washed your hands.

WhimsicalMoth · 15/01/2024 13:14

Yes that is odd. But not nearly as odd as my family member who put hand sanitizer on her mouth after a child had coughed near her.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 15/01/2024 13:17

Has your husband thought that maybe Dad had used the toilet, flushed it, washed his hands then...flushed the toilet again as maybe not everything in the toilet bowl has gone during the first flush ?

I guess your husband never eats out nor has a takeaway and that you or he makes and cooks everything from scratch after washing it thoroughly.

gamerchick · 15/01/2024 13:19

I'm with your husband. I wouldn't have eaten it either, once unclean hands is in your head. It doesn't leave.

DeeLusional · 15/01/2024 13:20

A man handling his man-parts, shaking the pee off wherever that ends up, then handling my food? Nah.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 15/01/2024 13:23

Why didn’t he hold the meat with a fork? 🤮

horseyhorsey17 · 15/01/2024 13:39

I wouldn't have touched it (don't eat meat anyway, but if I did). I just prefer to avoid getting V&D if I can.

Restaurants and takeaways have hygeine ratings so the worst offenders can be avoided.

If you touch the flush with clean hands after flushing once, you're transferring bacteria back to your clean hands.

Even if it there was no such thing as germs, it’s just the idea of someone who doesn’t wash their hands after touching their penis (or wiping their bum) that would put me off.
