Letter from the employer…what could it be?!

Letter has been sent out to all of the employees asking to attend a meeting on xxx day to update us on “current business position and proposed changes” and also stating “there will be no information provided prior to the meeting”…. Sounds scary!
what it could be? Company is not making losses. HR director who usually works from
home far away and only in the office few days a month has been rented a flat next to the company to be in the office daily for some
time now…everyone got a bonus in December cause company met the threshold (+200 employees)… has anyone had similar?

Company take over

Or being wound up/sold on

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 14/01/2024 08:17

Restructure / redundancies

Justcallmebebes · 14/01/2024 08:18

This happened a my last workplace. Exact same scenario. Law firm. It was a merger with another firm

NotThoseKindOfEggs · 14/01/2024 08:20

I’d say something that is going to negatively impact employment. Either the sale of the company, or just redundancies. It’s odd not to provide any sort of agenda to put people’s minds at ease, so it seems to point to a negative. Sorry!

Choux · 14/01/2024 08:21

I'd say that sounds like a takeover / merger with new contracts needed for all staff and potentially redundancies expected in duplicated roles. Or possibly a big restructure without a takeover as the company is not as efficient as its' competitors despite being profitable.

CaineRaine · 14/01/2024 08:22

Most likely a restructure, merger or significantly moving the office location. Good luck OP.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/01/2024 08:23

redundancies.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 14/01/2024 08:23

I'd guess sale or merger. They never provide any info about those meetings in advance.

jollyhollyday · 14/01/2024 08:23

Have had similar and it was a merger with another firm

Timeforabiscuit · 14/01/2024 08:26

As above, although once I received one of these letters and it was the long-standing CEO moving on.

Gobolina · 14/01/2024 08:28

Is the meeting late on a Friday afternoon?

mouseychick · 14/01/2024 08:28

You're all going to be made redundant

AnxietyLevelMax · 14/01/2024 08:31

@Gobolina no but we have few sites and i am not sure when is it being held at other sites though!

OP posts:
PubicZirconia · 14/01/2024 08:32

Hmm...doesn't sound great but maybe just clumsily managed/worded.Do you have a line manager you could probe just for reassurance? My previous manager would discreetly say (without actuslly saying) if it was something I would be directly impacted by.

Gobolina · 14/01/2024 08:33

I heard they try to deliver the worst information on a Friday then leave for the weekend.

How long so you have to wait until the meeting?

This would drive me mad.

BlingBlingTing · 14/01/2024 08:34

Merger, selling company or redundancy

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/01/2024 08:34

If private sector, it sounds like the business is being sold or taken over.

AnxietyLevelMax · 14/01/2024 08:35

Meeting is on Wednesday.
@PubicZirconia my manager has no info and was also shocked! (I work in finance and payroll), our FD said he cannot give us info as per the letter and we have to wait… i am panicking!

OP posts:
Bestyearever2024 · 14/01/2024 08:37

Don't panic

We had the same last year. It was an acquisition (we were being sold) and it is the best thing ever

Our new employer is way better than the old one.

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/01/2024 08:37

I would say restructure leading to headcount reduction.

We've just been through a sale and nothing was really communicated about that until it was done.

After that, multiple meetings with different units were held with people that were put at risk and then the process kicked in.

Unit wide meeting was held after the at risk were told.

Whole process was done quickly and ruthlessly.

VisionsOfSplendour · 14/01/2024 08:38

I agree with everyone else, sale of business or merger, if you work in finance wouldn't you know if the company was making losses to be closed down

Wheresthefibre · 14/01/2024 08:39

A actual letter? Sent through the post? Doing it by letter is really odd. Why not email or a calendar invite?

In my experience, it could be a few things. If the company is doing well it’s unlikely to be anything immediately awful.

places I have worked have done this for the following reasons

The whole site was being changed from one business area to another and we all needed retraining. It was actually good because more senior jobs became available.

Someone very senior is stepping down (or pushed out) and they are bringing someone else in.

Company is being sold. How good or bad that is depends on who it’s sold to and the terms.

A complete restructure. Good be good or bad

The company I work for, buys other companies in our industry. When we do the we (the senior team) and their senior team will usually do something similar to announce the change. Spend time talking to people, making sure they know who we are. What we do and trying to make sure anyone with worries about redundancy are listened to and reassured

cockapup · 14/01/2024 08:43

I was part of management at a company when we merged a few years ago. It was this scenario as each organisation held their info meetings for their staff on the same evening and announced the merger. Our HR consultants advised not to discuss beforehand to stop misinformation getting out, and so that all staff heard the same message.

No redundancies and in fact more staff needed as the business expanded. But it was a bit difficult at first as the work cultures adjusted to each other.

Think of it as positive OP .

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 14/01/2024 08:43

Please try not to panic. You do not yet know what the news is.

As PPO's have said, likely the company is being sold, embarking on a merger or there will be a restructure of some sort.

AnxietyLevelMax · 14/01/2024 08:46

Thank you all. I will try to keep calm but it is nerve wracking when you have kids, mortgage, loan and your husband is home currently recovering from the injury!

i work part time, two months ago was offered to extend my hours and work one day more since Jan..i just hope i am not being made redundant since they just offered me more work..

@VisionsOfSplendour no we dont make losses and we were above the threshold so everyone got bonus in Dec.
