Letter from the employer…what could it be?!

Letter has been sent out to all of the employees asking to attend a meeting on xxx day to update us on “current business position and proposed changes” and also stating “there will be no information provided prior to the meeting”…. Sounds scary!
what it could be? Company is not making losses. HR director who usually works from
home far away and only in the office few days a month has been rented a flat next to the company to be in the office daily for some
time now…everyone got a bonus in December cause company met the threshold (+200 employees)… has anyone had similar?

How many staff are working for your company?

AnxietyLevelMax · 14/01/2024 08:50

@Bestyearever2024 over 200 across few sites

mintbiscuit · 14/01/2024 08:50

if HR director is basing themselves locally I would guess a significant restructure and possibly merger/acquisition.

Bestyearever2024 · 14/01/2024 08:53

And everyone has had the letter? So all sites are (potentially) being sold?

That's a LOT of staff so the likelihood is it'll take some time to sort out the TUPE process

Nothing will happen quickly (in my experience)

And usually they try to wait for natural wastage before making staff redundant

tanstaafl · 14/01/2024 08:54

Recently has there been anything to fill in like a ‘skills matrix’ OP ?

AnxietyLevelMax · 14/01/2024 08:59

@tanstaafl nope, nothing. Everything is out of the blue. We are owned by a huge US company (one from the 100 us company list)

Agree with previous comments. Could be a merger/restructure/redundancies. There will be an embargo on information meaning those who do know the announcement are nor allowed to share.

Agree the odd part for me is snail mail! I've always known these to be email invites & then those off sick/maternity etc were to be called by line managed to be provided with invite details and recommended to attend

Good luck. Remember whatever the announcement is life goes on. Change is often a huge positive

TheLogicalSong · 14/01/2024 09:09

Whatever it is, it will include redundancies. A restructure of some kind, I expect.

Bestyearever2024 · 14/01/2024 09:10

Oh well....if you're owned by a huge US company its probably not an acquisition, then ..... it could be, but not likely

Anything in the press about the share price/business gossip?

Maybe the US company is expanding in the UK?

tanstaafl · 14/01/2024 09:11

Like other pp have suggested I think you’re being sold.
On Wednesday you’ll be told and there’ll be a press release going out at the same time.
can you google your company name with ‘takeover’ or ‘rumours’, see what comes up?

Treeinthesky · 14/01/2024 09:12

Bought out your gonna be tuped over. Exactly same happened to us few years ago. But an email got leaked om the 24th December. When everyone was on leave. It got shared on wattsapp and had to have an emergency teams meeting quite amusing actually. Or their moving to the USA and you either go or lose job

topnoddy · 14/01/2024 09:14

How is anyone on here going to know what it's going to be about then ?

The only way you are going to find out is to go to the meeting isn't it

letstrythatagain · 14/01/2024 09:18

I'd say merger is on the cards. We had this announced recently. Company sent an email out to employees of both companies with subject of 'Good News!'. It did NOT go down well 🤦‍♀️

IDontHateRainbows · 14/01/2024 09:20

I'd wager its a restructuring announcement. I work in this field.

Frasers · 14/01/2024 09:22

I’m afraid I agree, that is redundancies, due to a restructure/sale/takeover

Wanna17 · 14/01/2024 09:24

How about wait until XXX date and find out 😂😂🤦‍♀️

Voucherwoes · 14/01/2024 09:28

Don’t panic. Yes it’s likely to be something that results in redundancies sadly (this is exactly how every restructure
I’ve ever been through has started) but that doesn’t mean that you personally will be made redundant. While it’s a sickening feeling waiting for it - if it’s at scale you’re likely to have a reasonable consultation period.

AnneValentine · 14/01/2024 09:31

Sounds like a boy out or residency programme.

littlesandcircles · 14/01/2024 09:35

That sounds like it's been poorly handled. To send an actual letter and then give people more than 3 days to worry, gossip, speculate etc, will just create a really awful, toxic atmosphere.

I was involved in the comms of a big restructure and we were very careful to limit who knew what and also to ensure we didn't create mass panic. We sent out a meeting invite and called it a general staff update. It was sent the day before the meeting and planned for a day when most people were in. Managers were on hand to ring anyone who was on annual leave that day.

Having said all of that, it might be something positive!! I think if your own line manager doesn't know either that could possibly be a good thing (depending on their position in the company).

AyeRightYeAre · 14/01/2024 09:36

They have financial problems and will be making redundancies and restructuring.

Theatrefan12 · 14/01/2024 09:37

Unfortunately it’s likely redundancies. We got a similar email (wording was very similar to what you have put in your OP) and it was for the next day. Those not in the office when the email got sent got a text message with wording that you needed to be in or join the call. I was abroad that week and had to dial in

It may not be what you want to hear but have to say that redundancy for me was the best thing that ever happened to me as it gave me financial security that I was not expecting and I was fortunate to get a new job straight away

What I am trying to say is that it’s not always the end of the world if it does happen so make the right choice for you, if you get the choice and start to look straight away so there is little gap and you have to eat into your package

VisionsOfSplendour · 14/01/2024 09:39

Wanna17 · 14/01/2024 09:24

How about wait until XXX date and find out 😂😂🤦‍♀️

Are you lacking in empathy? What's will the emojis? The OPs reaction is perfectly normal

AyeRightYeAre · 14/01/2024 09:40

I heard they try to deliver the worst information on a Friday then leave for the weekend

Bad employers do this.

Good employers avoid Fridays to ebsthat people are left over the weekend without the chance to ask questions or be supported.

VisionsOfSplendour · 14/01/2024 09:42

AyeRightYeAre · 14/01/2024 09:36

They have financial problems and will be making redundancies and restructuring.

200 UK employees being made redundant in a profitabke business doesn't seem likely for a top 100 US owner. Any financial troubles would be public knowledge surely

BrieAndChilli · 14/01/2024 09:44

US company could be getting rid of some less profitable companies from its portfolio or maybe want to buy another company that is direct competition or something so needs to offload yours to event having a monopoly.

could be a structural rejuvenated/closing down one of the locations
