Letter from the employer…what could it be?!

Letter has been sent out to all of the employees asking to attend a meeting on xxx day to update us on “current business position and proposed changes” and also stating “there will be no information provided prior to the meeting”…. Sounds scary!
what it could be? Company is not making losses. HR director who usually works from
home far away and only in the office few days a month has been rented a flat next to the company to be in the office daily for some
time now…everyone got a bonus in December cause company met the threshold (+200 employees)… has anyone had similar?

Maybe a restructure, with some job losses. I’d say something major for a letter like that to go out but I think it’s mean to keep people waiting that long

A actual letter? Sent through the post? Doing it by letter is really odd. Why not email or a calendar invite?

In my experience, it could be a few things. If the company is doing well it’s unlikely to be anything immediately awful.

places I have worked have done this for the following reasons

The whole site was being changed from one business area to another and we all needed retraining. It was actually good because more senior jobs became available.

Someone very senior is stepping down (or pushed out) and they are bringing someone else in.

Company is being sold. How good or bad that is depends on who it’s sold to and the terms.

A complete restructure. Good be good or bad

The company I work for, buys other companies in our industry. When we do the we (the senior team) and their senior team will usually do something similar to announce the change. Spend time talking to people, making sure they know who we are. What we do and trying to make sure anyone with worries about redundancy are listened to and reassured

Because sometimes a physical letter to a home address with a signature on it is a legal necessity, if push comes to shove. And it also comes across as more formal and weighty rather than a Teams message or quick email.

Lollipop81 · 15/01/2024 19:13

I had similar before and it was another company buying us out.

Really? What circumstances are those? That a letter must be delivered. I wasn’t aware that some circumstances had to be a physical letter.

Usually a letter attached to an email is better proof that a letter has been received. Which was my thinking.

Could be anything from restructuring, redundancies, moving production/office facilities, take over.

IME whatever it is might be best for the future of the business and not impact everyone, but there will be some people negatively impacted or a significant period of uncertainly while the dust settles.

Good luck.

This!

WaitingForRainAgain · 15/01/2024 19:24

most lilkey a buyout, but so nerve wracking for you to wait it out till wednesday

EsmeT · 15/01/2024 19:24

I had a meeting like this 6 years ago, I was made redundant.

Spomsored · 15/01/2024 19:32

Do you know if other sites are having similar meetings - that should tell you if it is company-wide or your location only? Try not to worry.

Ilovecleaning · 15/01/2024 20:17

So sorry. No wonder you’re worried.

Please keep us updated and I hope it’s good news. Take care.🌺

mintmagnum3 · 15/01/2024 20:43

I would say a restructure for the company.
Possible redundancies? Although I really hope not ❤️
They are obviously making some form of change. So unfair to keep you waiting until Wednesday. J can imagine your worry :(

MumTeacherofMany · 15/01/2024 21:30

Merge or redundancies

BobnLen · 15/01/2024 21:35

Probably an acquisition or merger so new contracts and possibly restructuring but if it's a private company they can't say anything I don't think until a certain time because of shares price and stuff like that

EsmeSusanOgg · 15/01/2024 21:39

So, any change where roles may be made redundant has to follow a quote strict legal format in order to follow proper consultation guidelines. This sounds like a restructure/ merger/ redundancy situation. One where people will either have changed roles/ possible job losses.

If you are not already in a union, now is the time to join!

AnxietyLevelMax · 15/01/2024 21:53

thanks all. All of the sites have the meeting on the same day, at same time.
in regards to the actual letter being sent out - i think since we have some factories and not all of the factories’ employees have work email address they had to do a letter to everyone. Probably few days in advance just so everyone will get it in time.
everyone is gossiping and everyone is worried. Its mentally draining!

It could be anything - redundancy, restructuring, merger, takeover, new director/MD. I don't think this sort of letter is terribly helpful as it causes all sorts of anxiety. That said, the last time I got one of these was because our small, independent firm was joining a much larger conglomeration so the days of anxiety were totally unnecessary (and thus rather annoying and resented).

AllPaws4 · 16/01/2024 10:24

As a senior manager, I was contacted late one evening about a meeting that was to be held in similar circumstances. I was told that no information was given out prior to the meeting because we were merging and Stock Market regulations had to be met before staff were informed.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 16/01/2024 13:11

This happened to us as well, and it was a merger. Fingers crossed OP!

AnxietyLevelMax · 16/01/2024 13:16

Thank you all. I will update tomorrow!

Good luck today.

Roselilly36 · 17/01/2024 09:18

Doesn’t sound like it will be good news. I know someone this happened to, all employees nationwide called into a meeting, in SE of England, parked in the car park (company cars) thought they were going to hear news of who was taking the company over etc. all got made redundant with immediate effect, told to go home by train etc. would not let anyone take their car, some employees has personal stuff and car seats in their cars. I hope the outcome is a positive one for you OP, good luck.

StartingAgain2024 · 17/01/2024 09:27
